Book excerpt: Turkey is an interesting case study because it was one of the hardest hit emerging economies by the global financial crisis, with a year-over-year contraction of 15 percent during the first quarter of 2009. At the same time, anticipating the fallout from the crisis, the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) decreased policy rates by an astounding 1025 basis points over the November 2008 to November 2009 period. In this context, this paper addresses the following broad question: If an inflation targeting framework underpinned by a flexible exchange rate regime was not adopted, how much deeper would the recent recession have been? Counterfactual experiments based on an estimated structural model provide quantitative evidence which suggests that the recession would have been substantially more severe. In other words, the interest rate cuts implemented by the CBRT and exchange rate flexibility both helped substantially soften the impact of the global financial crisis.

Book excerpt: Foreign trade companies are the driving force of the economies especially in developing countries. These companies are the ones most affected by the crises caused by both internal and external factors. Rapid worldwide spread of the 2008 global crisis has produced enormous successive effects on the countries' foreign trade rates. Considering the fact that export is the core of development worldwide, and foreign trade companies have an important share (25 to 30%) in total exports of Turkey, the importance of these companies for the country's economy is better understood. In this study, a questionnaire has been conducted on 56 foreign trade companies which are the backbone of Turkish economy. By doing this, it is intended to provide a solution for these companies' increasing problems caused by the ongoing crisis. Through this survey, the effects of the global economic crisis on these companies, the crisis countermeasures they take and the strategies they follow especially in terms of finance and accounting practices were intended to be identified.

In this book, the economic independency level at which governments can take independent decisions is defined in terms of macroeconomic variables, on which the proposed model is based and developed. The book aims to analyse the economic policies of Turkey, from an economic dependency perspective; identify the macroeconomic variables affecting economic dependency; and develop an alternative economic policy, taking all of these points into consideration. Therefore, in order to structure the proposed model and to define policies, it is crucial to discuss economic policies, particularly in the post-1980 world; their consequences and impacts on Turkey; crises and the main variables under which they occurred; and to compare the economic policies of the Republic period and their consequences as well.
