Book excerpt: Collegiate female athletes face the challenges of conflicting feminine body ideals in society and in their sport all while striving for athletic success. Coaches are believed to play a significant role in an athlete's development, and thus have potential to (knowing or unknowingly) reinforce, or even introduce, eating pathology as a means to achieve athletic performance and/or a body ideal. Previous research has found a link between insecure attachment and subsequent eating pathology in athletes and non-athletes alike. The coach can be viewed as an important attachment figure in an athlete's life and development and thus serve a mediating role for how earlier attachment patterns do, or do not, transfer to an athletes identity, well-being, and functioning. The aim of the present study is to explore (1) the interpersonal dynamics that occur between a collegiate athlete and a coach, (2) the context of this attachment relationship as related to other attachment relationships, and (3) the interaction of these attachment relationships on disordered eating behaviors and negative body image beliefs. Providing a clearer picture of the interactions and relational patterns that can occur between a coach and an athlete will be useful in developing methods and interventions to help increase awareness of the coach's impact on body image and eating, and to create tailored interventions for both coaches and athletes to access more adaptive attachment representations, coping styles, and ways of being.

Book excerpt: Resilience in sport has been defined as "the role of mental processes and behavior in promoting personal assets and protecting an individual from the potential negative effect of stressors" (Fletcher & Sarkar, 2012, p. 675). Fletcher and Sarkar's (2012) found that various psychological factors were indicative of athlete resilience such as achievement motivation, social support, focus, confidence, and positive personality. To date, sport psychology researchers have dominantly examined resilience as an individual construct (e.g., Galli & Vealey, 2008; Fletcher & Sarkar; Wagstaff, Sarkar, Davidson, & Fletcher, 2016). However, it is also important to consider how athlete resilience might develop and operate in relationships with important others (e.g., coach). Narrative inquiry (Smith & Sparkes, 2009) was used in this study to explore the stories of seven NCAA Division I student-athletes' lived experiences of how the coach-athlete relationship influenced their ability to be resilient through major stress. Semi-structured interviews were conducted that asked participants about their respective coach-athlete relationship, how power and sociocultural factors influenced this relationship, and in turn, influenced student-athlete resilience. Braun and Clarke's (2006) thematic analysis was used for data analysis, which revealed the following themes: (a) Student-athlete core resilience, (b) The W.O.A.T., (c) The G.O.A.T., (d) W.O.AT. coach behaviors, (e) G.O.A.T. coach behaviors, (f) The W.O.A.T., the G.O.A.T., and student-athlete resilience, (g) The effect of coach major stress on student-athlete resilience, and (h) The relational shift: From bad to better, good to great. It is hoped that the findings of this study will be used as a powerful method from which coaches can emotionally connect with the participants' stories in order to better understand how they might operate within the coach-athlete relationship to influence student-athlete resilience.

Book excerpt: The National College Athlete Association (NCAA) reports ever-increasing numbers of students participating in collegiate sports. As the demand for and intensity of collegiate sports continue to grow, there is a need to understand the sport enviornment and assist in the development of environments conducive to the well-being of student-athletes. This study used the vocational and industrial-organizational theory of person-environment fit to concptualize the collegiate sport environment as it shares numerous characteristics with a work environment. This study examined the relationships between the perceived cohesion student-athletes experience with their coaches and teammates and their motivation to perform. The impact of three moderators (athletic identity, sex, and sport type) on the cohesion - motivation relationship was also examined. Using data collected from 219 male and female collegiate student-athletes, hierarchical multiple regressions tested the effects of the perceived coach-athlete relationship and team-athlete relationship on predicting athletes' motivation to perform as well as the moderating effects of athletic identity, sex, and sport type. The athletes' perceived coach-athlete cohesion, team-athlete cohesion, and athletic identity (i.e., the degree to which an individual identifies with the athlete role) predicted the intrinsic and self-determined motivation levels of student-athletes. Athletic identity moderated the relationship between perceived team-athlete cohesion and motivation; sport type moderated the relationship between perceived coach-athlete cohesion and motivation. For student-athletes who reported a low athletic identity, perceived cohesion with their team was more predictive of their motivation levels than it was for those who had higher athletic identity. The degree to which they perceived cohesion with coach was more strongly predictive of self-determined motivation levels for student-athletes of individual sports compared to student-athletes involved in team sports. Clinical implications of the findings and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Many student athletes (SAs) face daily life stressors in their busy lives that are likely to develop mental health symptoms. A majority of SAs experience these subclinical levels of mental health symptoms, but seldom seek out mental health resources because they either are unaware of the negative affect of their symptoms or hold a stigmatized belief towards seeking help. A coach’s role is to promote a safe space for athlete’s struggles and to help them achieve optimal performance in their respective sports, which can improve well-being and be a protective effect against mental illness. This research was a cross-sectional design with the purpose to investigate how coaches’ relationships with their athletes buffer to mental health symptoms, life stressors and performance in SAs. A survey was sent out to eligible student athletes at a Division I institution for two months (n=42). Results show significant Spearman’s correlations between life stressors, the coach-athlete relationship, depression and anxiety, which supports work done by Simons & Bird (2022). Mediation and Moderation analyses showed only some significant direct associations between life stress and depression. While this research evidenced an issue of power, there can be work done to reproduce the analyses that showed insignificance, building on previous work that highlighted social support as a significant moderator to athlete mental health (Kamis et al, 2021).The intent with this research is to understand the mechanisms behind the coach-athlete relationship and how they can affect life stressors, mental health and performance. By understanding these relationships, SA research involvement may be encouraged and be able to provide better support systems for SA mental health.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of the present study was twofold: (a) to examine the association between coach-athlete relationship quality and sport domain-specific self-esteem in collegiate athletes and (b) to assess differences between class levels within this potential correlation. Two established questionnaires, the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (Jowett & Ntoumanis, 2004) and the Elite Athlete Self-Description Questionnaire (Marsh et al., 1997), were administered electronically in this crosssectional study. Participants (N = 180) included male and female collegiate athletes, representing eighteen NCAA sports. Correlation analysis was used to assess the relationship among coach-athlete relationship quality and sport domain-specific self-esteem. Fisher’s z transformation was used to test for differences in this association across class levels. Significant associations in theoretically expected directions were found between coach-athlete relationship variables and sport domainspecific self-esteem; higher quality coach-athlete relationships associated with higher self-esteem perceptions and vice versa. When comparing these associations by class level, a difference was only found between sophomores and seniors. The findings of this study show an association between coach-athlete relationship quality and sport-domain specific self-esteem. Furthermore, results suggest that an individual’s age or class year may not influence the strength of this relationship. The findings of this study support development of higher quality coach-athlete relationships and the enhancement of athlete self-perception to facilitate adaptive sport experiences for collegiate athletes.

Book excerpt: "The general problem of this study was to compare perceptions of the coach in the ideal coach/athlete relationship, as expressed by collegiate female basketball players and their coaches. Further analysis was completed comparing: (1) freshmen and seniors' perceptions, (2) the coaches' years of coaching experience and its effect upon the coaches' perceptions, and (3) perceptions of participants in the National Collegiate Athletic Association compared to those in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Institutions from Idaho, Oregon, and Washington which had four year intercollegiate womens' basketball programs were considered for participation. Participants included 107 athletes and 30 coaches. Perceptions were measured by the administration of a questionnaire using the Semantic Differential Technique. Data were analyzed for statistically significant differences by the use of a "t'' test. Statistically significant differences were found concerning coaches' and athletes' perceptions of the coach in the ideal coach/athlete relationship. Findings and conclusions were discussed along with reconmendations for future studies concerning the coach/athlete relationship"--Document.

Book excerpt: The current study investigated the influence of the coach-athlete relationship on athlete engagement (AE). Both variables (the coach-athlete relationship & AE) were quantitatively defined and assessed by reliable measurements, the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (CART-Q) and Athlete Engagement Questionnaire (AEQ), respectively. Participants (N = 72) included NCAA team sport athletes 18 years and older. Correlation analysis assessed the relationship between the coach-athlete relationship composite score, its subscales (closeness, commitment, and complementarity), and global AE. Regression models were used to assess whether the coach-athlete relationship predicts AE. Results indicate that the coach-athlete relationship composite score and all three subscales positively correlated with global AE. The coach-athlete relationship score and complementarity were significant predictors of AE. Future research warrants focus on mediating variables and intervention methods for cultivating higher-quality coach-athlete relationships and increasing athlete engagement. These findings provide a framework for social agents within athletics to improve athletes' psychological well-being and promote sport participation.

Participants included 16 males and 35 females from a Division III College. The Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (Jowett & Ntoumas, 2004) was used to measure the coach-athlete relationship and the Sport Motivation Scale II (Pelletier, et al., 2013) was used to measure motivation. Two One-Way Independent Groups ANOVA were used to compare gender differences within each gender dyad. Female athletes with a female or male coach showed the relationship as more close and complementary than male athletes with a male coach. Male athletes with a male coach had more external motivation than female athletes with a female coach or a male coach. Female athletes with a female coach had less Introjected motivation than male athletes with a male or female coach. Female athletes with a male coach had less Introjected motivation than male athletes with a male or female coach.

Book excerpt: The quality of the coach-athlete relationship is comprised of the coach and athletes’ closeness, commitment, and cooperative interactions, and is determined by multiple relationship factors including athlete perceptions of coach confidence and coach power. Empirical research has associated coach confidence with athlete satisfaction and certain types of leader authority have been empirically linked to high levels of follower satisfaction and performance. Coach confidence and power are proposed to work through the coach-athlete relationship in predicting athlete satisfaction. The proposed research question will investigate whether the coach-athlete relationship acts as a mediator through which athletes’ perceptions of coach power and coach confidence predict athlete satisfaction. The study employed a cross sectional design utilizing self-report survey data from a sample (n=365) of NCAA Division I track & field athletes. Four research tested valid and reliable questionnaires using 7 point Likert scales were used to assess the research question: Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire, Power in Sport Questionnaire, Coach Efficacy Scale, and the Athlete Satisfaction Questionnaire. Correlational analyses and mediation analyses were used to analyze the survey data. Results revealed a mediation effect of the coach-athlete relationship on coach power (b=0.30, 95% CI [0.16, 0.48]) and coach confidence (b=0.21, 95% CI [0.09, 0.37]), in predicting athlete satisfaction. This study highlights the importance of cultivating a positive and healthy coach-athlete relationship both for performance and satisfaction of both athlete and coach. The study also explains how different sources of coach power can be received positively or negatively, based on the quality of the coach-athlete relationship. Lastly, this study provides more insight into the leader power and follower (athlete) satisfaction dynamic in the sport setting, whereas most social power research to date has been within the business psychology domain. Future studies should provide additional empirical evidence for coaching education and interventions aimed to improve strategies for coaching effectiveness and athletic performance.

Book excerpt: Abstract: For many coaches, athletes, and sport psychologists, mental toughness is considered to be one of the most essential characteristics athletes must possess in order to be successful in sport. While there is yet to be a consensus on what mental toughness means, the idea that coaches are one of the main influences of mental toughness development in athletes has been supported by many. The purpose of this study was to examine how the coach-athlete relationship can affect mental toughness development in athletes and if coaching behaviors are perceived depending on how athletes view their relationship with their coach. Participants of this longitudinal dual-methods study were 16 female volleyball players from a single NCAA Division II school. Athletes completed a demographic questionnaire, the Mental Toughness Scale (MTS-11), Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (CART-Q), Coaching Behaviors Scale for Sport (CBS-S), and a total of three different open-ended questions at the pre- and post- season. Pearson r correlation analysis did not find significance between mental toughness and the perceived quality of the coach-athlete relationship; however, there was significance in the relationship between coaching behaviors and the coach-athlete relationship quality. A Paired t-Test analysis also found significant changes in how athletes viewed the quality of the coach- athlete relationships from pre- to post- season. A total of 11 themes were found after a thematic analysis was conducted for the responses to the open-ended questions. This study aimed to explore athletes’ ideal coach-athlete relationship and how this relationship can be achieved to maximize player development and performance.
