Book excerpt: Previous research, using driving simulation, crash data, and naturalistic methods, has begun to shed light on the dangers of texting while driving. Perhaps because of the dangers, no published work has experimentally investigated the dangers of texting while driving using an actual vehicle. Additionally, previous research does not clearly differentiate the dangers associated with reading and writing text messages. To address these issues, 42 participants drove an instrumented research vehicle on a closed driving course. Participants drove under a control, text reading, and text writing condition. Baseline text reading and writing data were also collected outside of the research vehicle. Results indicated that impairment associated with texting while driving may be greater than previously thought. Principally, when reading or writing texts, drivers exhibited reductions in reaction time that were nearly twice as great as previously thought. Drivers also exhibited nearly identical impairment in the reading and writing conditions, suggesting that both reading and writing text messages may be equally dangerous. These results have immediate implications for improving our understanding of the dangers of texting while driving and may be useful for future public policy discussions.

It examines behavioural adaptation within the context of historical and theoretical perspectives, and puts forth tangible—and practical—solutions that can effectively address adverse behavioural adaptation to road safety interventions before it occurs. Edited by Christina Rudin-Brown and Samantha Jamson, with chapters authored by leading road safety experts in driver psychology and behaviour, the book introduces the concept of behavioural adaptation and details its more relevant issues. It reviews the definition of behavioural adaptation that was put forward by the OECD in 1990 and then puts this definition through its paces, identifying where it may be lacking and how it might be improved. This sets the context for the remaining chapters which take the OECD definition as their starting points. The book discusses the various theories and models of behavioural adaptation and more general theories of driver behaviour developed during the last half century. It provides examples of the "evidence" for behavioural adaptation—instances in which behavioural adaptation arose as a consequence of the introduction of safety countermeasures. The book then focuses on the internal, "human" element and considers countermeasures that might be used to limit the development of behavioural adaptation in various road user groups. Book excerpt: Despite the advances that have been made to enhance vehicular safety, motor vehicle accidents remain one of the greatest public safety concerns in the country. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2010 there were 32,885 people killed in an estimated 5,419,000 police-reported motor vehicle traffic crashes (NHTSA, 2010). Some of these accidents could be prevented if people adopt safer driving habits. Texting behind the wheel is especially an issue among teenagers since text messaging has become the preferred method of communications among teenagers. There is some research that suggests drivers can be influenced by the behavior of their parents or friends. But most of this research has been focused on cell phone use when driving. There is limited research in regards to texting behind the wheel. An anonymous online survey was utilized to collect data from 18-24 year olds, regarding their texting and driving behavior and their parents' and friends' behavior. This survey was distributed through the Steven's Driving Facebook page. 441 responses were collected. The results showed that 81. 3 % of young drivers reported texting and driving, which agrees with previous literature. Furthermore, no differences were found in the texting and driving behavior of young drivers of different genders and ages. Drivers, between the age of 18 and 24, that currently text and drive are 2. 24 times more likely to have observed their parents texting and driving prior to having their license. Also, young drivers that engage in texting while driving are, 3. 8 times more likely to have seen their friends also text and drive. Specifically, young drivers in all three age groups, 18-19, 20-21 and 22-24 are 3. 02, 4. 11 and 4. 0 times more likely to have friends that currently text then those that do not. The influence of peers on texting and driving continue to be a problem. More studies need to be performed on the influence parents have on their children's texting and driving behaviors. Public awareness campaigns need to be developed that focus on telling parents not to text and drive especially when in the presence of their children.

However, 52 percent of US drivers ages 18-29 have reported texting or e-mailing while driving at least once in the last 30 days (Novelli, 2010). In order to effectively deter drivers from text messaging, it is imperative to understand why drivers engage in this behavior. This study surveyed college students regarding texting while driving behaviors (initiating texts, replying to texts, reading texts, or not texting while driving) and texting frequencies. The study measured participant's locus of control, need for affiliation, and Big Five Factor affinities, as well as their perceived risk of texting while driving. Locus of control orientation, extraversion, agreeableness, emotional stability, openness to experience, and perceived risk were found to be related to texting while driving.
