Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 24 (thesis year 1979) a total of 10,033 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 215 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 24 reports these submitted in 1979, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Because lithium is the least dense elemental metal, materials scientists and engineers have been working for decades to develop a commercially viable aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloy that would be even lighter and stiffer than other aluminum alloys. The first two generations of Al-Li alloys tended to suffer from several problems, including poor ductility and fracture toughness; unreliable properties, fatigue and fracture resistance; and unreliable corrosion resistance. Now, new third generation Al-Li alloys with significantly reduced lithium content and other improvements are promising a revival for Al-Li applications in modern aircraft and aerospace vehicles. Book excerpt: These volumes, 9 and 10, of Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics constitute the proceedings of an international symposium on the fracture mechanics of ceramic materials held at the Japan Fine Ceramics Center, Nagoya, Japan on July 15, 16, 17, 1991. These proceedings constitute the fifth pair of volumes of a continuing series of conferences. Volumes 1 and 2 were from the 1973 symposium, volumes 3 and 4 from a 1977 symposium, and volumes 5 and 6 from a 1981 symposium all of which were held at The Pennsylvania State University. Volumes 7 and 8 are from the 1985 symposium which was held at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The theme ofthis conference, as for the previous four, focused on the mechanical behavior ofceramic materials in terms of the characteristics ofcracks, particularly the roles which they assume in the fracture processes and mechanisms. The 82 contributed papers by over 150 authors and co-authors represent the current state of that field. They address many of the theoretical and practical problems ofinterest to those scientists and engineers concerned with brittle fracture.

Book excerpt: The effect of loading rates, ranging from 10 to 100,000 ksi square root of (in/sec), and temperatures, ranging from room temperature to -100F, on the plane strain fracture toughness of several high strength alloy steels has been determined. Materials investigated are a commercial 4340 steel, a modified 4330 steel from a gun tube forging having three different heat treatments and two different heats of 250 grade maraging steel. Test specimens utilized are essentially ASTM 'compact tension' type specimens of one inch thickness. Tests were conducted on an open loop, hydraulic, high loading rate tensile testing machine. Results are presented in the form of graphs of fracture toughness versus temperature for the maximum and minimum loading rates ('dynamic' and 'static'). Fracture toughness versus loading rate at -60F and yield strength versus elastic strain rate at room temperature, -60F and -100F for one heat of maraging steel are also reported. (Author).

Book excerpt: The intent of this program, originally, was to determine the role of strain rate and temperature on the hot plasticity of several classes of metals and alloys. The strain rates were comparable to those encountered in usual hot working operations, including extrusion; they varied from about 0.001 to 100 per second. It was also an intent of this program to study the deformation and fracture mechanisms which prevailed in such high strain rate tests. Both cast and wrought structures were of interest to our studies since the great bulk of all metals and alloys utilized in this world usually start as cast ingot structures. Further, the selection of materials for test was such that both single-phase and multi-phase alloys would be included, the multi-phase alloys involving both soft and hard second phases. In the course of these studies, when it became obvious that relatively low values of ductility were being obtained under the optimum conditions of strain rate and temperature, even for pure metals, means were sought to enhance the hot plasticity. One of the evident limitations of cast structures was the very coarse grain size, from 2 to 20 mm diameter; a second shortcoming was the rapid increase in grain size of the more ductile wrought materials when heating to the high test temperatures.
