Book Single Motherhood and Its Impact on Adolescent Behaviour in Secondary Schools

Download or read book Single Motherhood and Its Impact on Adolescent Behaviour in Secondary Schools written by Catherine Kisasa Mutinda Muthonde and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigated the impact of single motherhood on adolescent behavior in secondary schools in Makadara Constituency, Nairobi County, Kenya. The field research findings revealed that an adolescent living in a single-mother home took on more responsibilities around the home hence leaving little time for personal, peer or school assignments and study. The results further revealed that when an adolescent assumed too much adult-role in the family they ended up performing poorly in school, dropping out of school, having minimal or no time of play, lacking time to socialize and forfeiting time to just be a child and adolescent. The absence of a father figure, less economic security, less attention, less guidance, poor neighborhoods and lack of extended family support system may lead an adolescent to display a high degree of misbehavior, low self-esteem, being reserved and withdrawn in the face of changing demands at home, school and society. The findings further revealed that the unmet needs of the adolescent exposed them to greater risks as they grew up. The field findings revealed that when an adolescent lacks material support, personal fulfillment and spiritual emptiness, it impacts negatively on them. Consequently, if the challenges are not addressed in time, it permeates the whole personality, behaviour and perception of the adolescent, turning them to perpetrators of aggression and misbehavior. The conclusions drawn from the findings indicate that single motherhood affects adolescents in secondary schools in Makadara Constituency, resulting in poor performance, truancy, lying, stealing, immorality, early pregnancy, school drop-out and other irresponsible behaviour that led to indiscipline at home, community and in secondary schools. The recommendation of the thesis is that adolescents from single mothers need to be taught life skills and values that will enable them to handle life challenges effectively.

Book excerpt: This research project focuses on single parents and what education level they have achieved or are currently achieving and how this impacts the time they are able to spend with their children. It shows there is a relationship to education level of the parent and how often they read to their child or expose their child to educational media. My hypothesis is that an educated single parent, who is pursuing a type of secondary education, will interact more by reading and playing games with their child than a single parent who is not pursuing a secondary education.

Book Parenthood and Academic Performance

Download or read book Parenthood and Academic Performance written by Abel Mkumbwa and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current psychological principles of classroom management and administration insist that children do not come from the same family background and that for that reason effective empathic understanding of each child's personal background is essential. It is argued that family background and context of a child affect his or her reaction to life situations, including his or her level of performance in school. The specific objective of the study has been to determine the extent to which the factors of hailing from single parenthood families affects performance secondary school students, either negatively or positive. This book is designed to explore the influence of single parenthood on academic performance of secondary school students .Thus the results show that students from intact families scored significantly higher marks in targeted subjects compared to students from single parenthood. The findings should help various stake holders to address problems associated with children from single parenthood both in their families and schools.

This book was released on 2016-12-29 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Pedagogy - Pedagogic Sociology, grade: B+, Ahmadu Bello University (Institute of Education), course: Professional Diploma in Education, language: English, abstract: Education is key to national and sustainable growth but the family background hampers the educational productivity and attainment of students in training. This research project is an investigation of this problem. This work concentrates on looking at the causes of the problem as well as its effects and it proffers possible solutions to the problem it investigates. It is shocking to discover that the general public is aware of this problem and that it is eating deep into the lives of students from poor family backgrounds because they cannot compete favourably with their fellow students, they exhibit deviant behaviours, have personality and psychological problems, low self esteem/trauma, difficulty in personal and academic adjustment to mention just a few. For this reason this research work, recommended possible solutions as creating an enabling environment for discussion at home after school hours, government/non-governmental organizations to provide support that will augment the efforts of the parents in catering for their children, provision of better nutritional diets to their children, guidance and counseling units be made functional to help counsel students who come from poor family backgrounds among others.
