Book Effects of Nanosilica Filler on the Thermal and Mechanical Properties of an Epoxy amine Resin System

Download or read book Effects of Nanosilica Filler on the Thermal and Mechanical Properties of an Epoxy amine Resin System written by Ritu Gurung and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cure kinetics of an epoxy resin with surface modified silica filler (Nanopox F 400 resin) and without silica filler (DGEBA resin), cured with an amine curing agent, DDS at an N-H/epoxy molar ratio of 1.1:1 was studied by Dynamic Scanning Calorimetry in two basic modes; Dynamic temperature scanning and Isothermal temperature scanning. Dynamic temperature scanning analysis suggests that the addition of surface modified silica nanoparticles in the epoxy resin increases the rate of reaction by acting as a catalyst. The hydroxyl groups in silica nanoparticles catalyze the cure reaction by shifting the exothermic peak towards the lower temperature. Under dynamic temperature scanning, the glass transition temperature (Tg) was lower for the Nanopox F 400 system than the unfilled control system. The glass transition temperature and changes in the Tg found in DSC analysis were in line with TMA analysis and DMA analysis. Isothermal scanning analysis shows that the control system follows the Kamal autocatalytic model whereas Nanopox F 400 system follows the modified Kamal autocatalytic model. The model parameters were determined by a nonlinear multiple regression method. The mechanical properties of Nanopox F 400 resin and control resin both cured with DDS at an N-H/epoxy molar ratio of 1.1:1 were examined by tensile testing. The tensile results showed increase in modulus and decrease in tensile strength for 40 wt. % surface modified Nanopox F 400 system compared to the control system. The effect of processing technique and silica content on the tensile properties of silica reinforced epoxy resin was further analyzed. The structure of Nanopox F 400 resin was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and 1H NMR spectroscopy.

Book Developments in Reinforced Plastics 4

Download or read book Developments in Reinforced Plastics 4 written by G. Pritchard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most interesting developments in composite materials technology during the past decade has been the attempt to displace thermosetting resins from their position as the natural matrix in 'advanced' composites for sUl;h fields as aerospace. Dr McMahon gives some indication of the nature of this challenge in his chapter on fibre-reinforced thermoplastics. He acknowledges the problem of their low fibre contents, with the associated possibility of inadequate mechanical properties, especially in compression; and draws attention to the way in which the lack of suitable teSI methods for composites in compression has caused difficulties in assessing the latest thermoplastics composites in this respect. It is therefore of special interest that Professor Piggott deals with the whole question of compression tesllflg of composites in Chapter 4. On the positive side, reinforced thermoplastics seem to be much more damage-tolerant than thermosets. This is clearly an advantage that will not be lost on the aircraft industry. The subject of damage repair to FRP is one of substantial concern; the wider question of defect detection and assessment is discussed authoritatively by Reifsnider and Henneke in Chapter 3, which focuses on the technique of thermography.

Book Ultrasonic Mixing of Epoxy Curing Agents

Download or read book Ultrasonic Mixing of Epoxy Curing Agents written by W. T. Hodges and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new technique for mixing solid curing agents into liquid epoxy resins using ultrasonic energy has been developed. This procedure allows standard curing agents such as 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (4,4'-DDS) and its 3,3'-isomer, (3,3'-DDS) to be mixed without prior melting of the curing agent. It also allows curing agents with very high melt temperatures such as 4,4'-diaminobenzophenone (4,4'-DABP) (242 C) to be mixed without premature curing. Four aromatic diamines were ultrasonically blended into MY-720 epoxy resin. These were 4,4'-DDS; 3,3'-DDS; 4,4'-DABP and 3,3'-DABP. Unfilled moldings were cast and cured for each system and their physical and mechanical properties compared.

Download or read book Exploratory Study on the Effects of Novel Diamine Curing Agents and Isocyanate Precursors on the Properties on New Epoxy and Urethane Adhesives written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aromatic diamines based on diphenyl sulfone and benzophenone were studied as epoxy adhesive curing agents. Previously found differences in adhesive strengths for meta vs para orientation were not found in these series. The use of aluminum and alumina as fillers in a m,m prime-methylene dianiline-cured epoxy adhesive was not found to be beneficial to adhesive strength. Alumina filled adhesives had much lower strength than unfilled adhesives. The unfilled m,m prime-methylene dianiline-based epoxy adhesive had excellent resistance to moisture relative to a p,p prime-methylene dianiline-based adhesive and maintained good strengths up to 250 F. A glass fiber composite based on a m,m prime-methylene dianiline-cured epoxy appeared to be equivalent to the p,p prime-methylene dianiline-cured epoxy as judged by short beam shear tests. Book The Effects of Silica Nanoparticles in Toughened Epoxy Resins and Fiber Reinforced Composites

Download or read book The Effects of Silica Nanoparticles in Toughened Epoxy Resins and Fiber Reinforced Composites written by Stephan Sprenger and published by Carl Hanser Verlag GmbH Co KG. This book was released on 2015-12-07 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work shows how the properties of cured epoxy resins are improved significantly by the addition of surface-modified silica nanoparticles. Addition of nanosilica typically linearly increases both the modulus and the fracture toughness, and compressive strength and fatigue performance can be improved significantly as well. Combining this modification with the classic toughening concept using reactive liquid rubbers or core-shell elastomers leads to hybrid systems, which are characterized by high toughness and stiffness, with further-improved fatigue performance. Laminates manufactured by using these modified resins exhibit improved performance as well. For the fatigue performance of laminates made from hybrid resins a tenfold increase in cyclic loadings upon failure can be achieved. This makes them especially suitable for highly stressed composites parts such as in automotive applications, aerospace, or wind energy.

Book Handbook of Epoxy Blends

Download or read book Handbook of Epoxy Blends written by Jyotishkumar Parameswaranpillai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference work compiles and summarizes the available information on epoxy blends. It covers all essential areas – the synthesis, processing, characterization and applications of epoxy blends – in a comprehensive manner. The handbook is highly application-oriented and thus serves as a valuable, authoritative reference guide for researchers, engineers, and technologists working on epoxy blends, but also for graduate and postgraduate students, polymer chemists, and faculties at universities and colleges. The handbook is divided into three parts and organized by the types of blends and components: Part I covers epoxy rubber blends, Part II focuses on epoxy thermoplastic blends, and Part III examines epoxy block-copolymer blends. Each part starts with an introduction, and the individual chapters provide readers with comprehensive information on the synthesis and processing, analysis and characterization, properties and applications of the different epoxy blends. All parts conclude with a critical evaluation of the applications, weighing their advantages and drawbacks. Leading international experts from corporate and academic research institutions and universities discuss the correlations of different epoxy blend properties with their macro-, micro- and nanostructures. This handbook thus offers a rich resource for newcomers to the field, and a major reference work for experienced researchers, the first of its kind available on the market. As epoxies find extremely broad applications, e.g. in oil & gas, in the chemical industry, building and construction industry, automotive, aviation and aerospace, boat building and marine applications, in adhesives and coatings, and many more, this handbook addresses researchers and practitioners from all these fields.

Book Chemistry and Technology of Epoxy Resins

Download or read book Chemistry and Technology of Epoxy Resins written by Bryan Ellis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epoxy resins have been commercially available for about 45 years and now have many major industrial applications, especially where technical advantages warrant their somewhat higher costs. The chemistry of these resins is fascinating and has attracted study by many very able scientists. The technological applications of the epoxy resins are very demanding and there are many new developments each year. The aims of the present book are to present in a compact form both theoretical and practical information that will assist in the study, research and innovations in the field of epoxy resin science and technology. The literature on epoxy resins is so vast that it is not possible to be encyclopaedic and that is not the function of the present text. It is the editor's hope that the selection of topics discussed will provide an up-to-date survey. There is some overlap in the chapters but this is minimal and so each chapter is essentially self contained. As with all chemicals there are toxicological and other hazards. These are not dealt with in this text since a little knowledge can be dangerous, but material supplied can provide information regarding any safety precautions that may be necessary. However, often these precautions are not onerous and epoxy resins, or more specifically the hardeners, can be handled readily. It is hoped that this text will provide an up-to-date outline of the science and technology of epoxy resins and stimulate further research into unsolved problems and assist further technological developments.
