Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present monograph deals with refined theories of elastic plates in which both bending and transverse shear effects are taken into account and with some of their applications. Generally these more exact theories result in inte gration problems of the sixth order; consequently, three mutually independent boundary conditions at each edge of the plate are required. This is in perfect agreement with the conclusions of the theory of elasticity. The expressions for shearing forces following from refined theories are then valid for the whole investigated region including its boundary where the corresponding boundary conditions for these shearing forces can be prescribed. Quite different seems to be the situation in the classical Kirchhoff-Love's theory in which the influence of transverse shearing strains is neglected. Owing to this simplification the governing differential equation developed by the classical theory is of the fourth order only; consequently, the number of boundary conditions appurtenant to the applied mode of support appears now to be in disagreement with the order of the valid governing equation. Then, limiting the validity of the expressions for shearing forces to the open region of the middle plane and introducing the notion of the so called fictitious Kirchhoff's shearing forces for the boundary of the plate, three actual boundary conditions at each edge of the plate have to be replaced by two approximate conditions transformed in the Kirchhoff's sense.

This book was released on 2000-06-13 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elastic plates form a class of very important mechanical structures that appear in a wide range of practical applications, from building bodies to microchip production. As the sophistication of industrial designs has increased, so has the demand for greater accuracy in analysis. This in turn has led modelers away from Kirchoff's classical theory fo

The main body of work in this area is concerned with the control of time-dependent displacements and stresses, and assumes linear elastic conditions, namely linear elastic material behavior and small defor- tion. See, e. g. , [1]–[3], the collections of papers [4, 5], and references therein. On the other hand, in the present paper we consider the static optimal control of a structure made of a nonlinear elastic material and und- going large deformation. An important application is the suppression of static or quasi-static elastic deformation in flexible space structures such as parts of satellites by the use of control loads [6]. Solar rad- tion and radiation from other sources induce a temperature field in the structure, which in turn generates an elastic displacement field. The displacements must usually satisfy certain limitations dictated by the allowed working conditions of various orientation-sensitive instruments and antennas in the space vehicle. For example, a parabolic reflector may cease to be effective when undergoing large deflection. The elastic deformation can be reduced by use of control loads, which may be imp- mented via mechanically-based actuators or more modern piezoelectric devices. When the structure under consideration is made of a rubb- like material and is undergoing large deformation, nonlinear material and geometric effects must be taken into account in the analysis.

Book On the Theory of Transverse Bending of Elastic Plates

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Departing from a self-contained two-dimensional formulation of the linear theory problem of transverse bending plates, three distinct topics are considered. The first of these concerns the integration problem for the case of orthotropy, specifically in regard to the factorization of a certain sixth-order master-equation. The second topic concerns the boundary layer aspects of contracted or reduced boundary conditions for the interior solution contribution for the case of isotropic plates. The analysis of this is based on a new form of the well known general solution in terms of a deflection and a stress function variable, with this new form making it possible to distinguish between first- and second-order transverse shear deformation effects; the former being associated with the edge zone and the latter with the interior domain of the plate, with the shear correction terms for the interior being generalizations of the Timoshenko shear correction terms for beams. The third topic is a new system of contracted boundary conditions, both for the stress and for the displacement boundary value problem, in such a way that first-order transverse shear deformation effects are explicitly incorporated in the interior-domain solution contribution, without the necessity of a simultaneous determination of the edge-zone solution contribution. Book Refined Dynamical Theories of Beams Plates and Shells and Their Applications

Download or read book Refined Dynamical Theories of Beams Plates and Shells and Their Applications written by Isaac Elishakoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As is known, classical theories of vibration of the most fre quently encountered structural elements (e. g. , beams, plates and shells) disregard the effects of the shear deformation and rotary inertia. Refined theories, with these effects taken into account, have been pioneered by Bresse, Lord Rayleigh, Timoshenko, Eric Reissner, Mindlin and others. These refined theories have been fruitfully applied in recent decades in both theoretical and prac tical solid mechanics problems. The European Mechanics Committee approved holding EURO~illCH Colloquium 219 on "Refined Dynamical Theories of Beams, Plates and Shells and Their Applications" for reviewing the recent devel opments, providing guidelines for future investigations and presenting a forum for current work of younger researchers. The Colloquium was held during September 23 - 26, 1986, at the Uni versitat-Gesamthochschule Kassel, in the city of Kassel, Federal Republic of Germany. 45 Representatives of academia and industry, from nine European countries, as well as from Israel, USA and India participated in this Colloquium. IV 36 lectures were presented during the five sessions: Session A: Theory of Vibrations of Plates and Shells Session B: Various Approaches for Dynamical Problems of Beams Session C: Random Vibrations and Dynamic Stability Session D: Vibrations of Composite Structures Session E: Special Dynamical Problems of Beams, Plates and Shells The papers in this volums were divided into two parts: papers of invited keynote lectures and those of the invited contributed lectures.

Book Handbook On Timoshenko ehrenfest Beam And Uflyand Mindlin Plate Theories

Download or read book Handbook On Timoshenko ehrenfest Beam And Uflyand Mindlin Plate Theories written by Isaac E Elishakoff and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The refined theory of beams, which takes into account both rotary inertia and shear deformation, was developed jointly by Timoshenko and Ehrenfest in the years 1911-1912. In over a century since the theory was first articulated, tens of thousands of studies have been performed utilizing this theory in various contexts. Likewise, the generalization of the Timoshenko-Ehrenfest beam theory to plates was given by Uflyand and Mindlin in the years 1948-1951.The importance of these theories stems from the fact that beams and plates are indispensable, and are often occurring elements of every civil, mechanical, ocean, and aerospace structure.Despite a long history and many papers, there is not a single book that summarizes these two celebrated theories. This book is dedicated to closing the existing gap within the literature. It also deals extensively with several controversial topics, namely those of priority, the so-called 'second spectrum' shear coefficient, and other issues, and shows vividly that the above beam and plate theories are unnecessarily overcomplicated. In the spirit of Einstein's dictum, 'Everything should be made as simple as possible but not simpler,' this book works to clarify both the Timoshenko-Ehrenfest beam and Uflyand-Mindlin plate theories, and seeks to articulate everything in the simplest possible language, including their numerous applications. This book is addressed to graduate students, practicing engineers, researchers in their early career, and active scientists who may want to have a different look at the above theories, as well as readers at all levels of their academic or scientific career who want to know the history of the subject. The Timoshenko-Ehrenfest Beam and Uflyand-Mindlin Plate Theories are the key reference works in the study of stocky beams and thick plates that should be given their due and remain important for generations to come, since classical Bernoulli-Euler beam and Kirchhoff-Love theories are applicable for slender beams and thin plates, respectively.Related Link(s)
