Book excerpt: A group of male subjects (N = 8) were used to examine the effects of two selected rest intervals on total work volume and blood lactate during a maximal effort elbow flexion resistance exercise performed at a fixed relative resistance (70% IRM). The rest intervals were set at 30 seconds (R$\sb{30}$) and 180 seconds (R$\sbþ$) and were based on the half and full recovery times respectively of the high energy creatine phosphate (CP) system. The exercise continued until a computerized light sensor system detected a movement speed decrease to a pre-determined level of fatigue. R$\sbþ$ resulted in a significantly greater volume of work (247%) achieved without a statistically significant increase in blood lactate (10%) compared to R$\sb{30}$. It was concluded that a rest interval between repeats of elbow flexion exercise of 180 seconds versus 30 seconds significantly increased the ability to do work without a significant increase in the contribution of the anaerobic lactic system. Book excerpt: Between set rest intervals (RI) are one of the most important variables in resistance training; however, no known research has investigated the effects of RIs greater than 5-min during strength training (>85% of 1RM). The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of three different RIs (2, 5, and 8-minute) on training volume (kg, sets x reps x resistance) and repetition sustainability during a high-intensity bench press exercise (> 85% of 1RM). Fifteen resistance trained males (mean+sd, age = 26+5 yr, height = 161+6 cm, body mass = 79+6 kg, bench press 1RM ratio = 1.39+0.1) completed 3 experimental sessions, during which 4 sets of the bench press were performed with 85% of a 1RM load. During experimental sessions, the bench press was performed with a 2, 5, or 8-minute RI in a random counterbalanced design. Book excerpt: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a form of exercise used to counter the effects of obesity. HIIT consists of low volume, but increased intensity in a short period of time followed by a relative recovery period, which can be active or passive. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of different recovery modalities and durations between high-intensity interval training on lactate clearance, sprint performance, heart rate, and the rating of perceived exertion. METHODS: Forty students participated in the study [(Age: 21.9 +/- 0.3 years; Height: 172.6 +/- 1.6 cm; Weight: 79.4 +/- 2.4 kg; Body Fat %: 18.1 +/- 1.3 (BodPod)]. Subjects were randomly assigned into recovery conditions (modality x duration) which was one of four groups: active recovery for 10 minutes (AR10), active recovery for 5 minutes (AR5), passive recovery for 10 minutes (PR10), or passive recovery for 5 minutes (PR5). The exercise protocol consisted of 3 total maximal-effort sprints each followed by the assigned group recovery phase. Each sprint trial covered a 75-foot distance between a starting line and wall, in which each subject sprinted down to the wall and back to the starting line a total of 3 times, for a total of 450 feet per sprint trial. Following each sprint trial, sprint time, blood lactate concentration, heart rate, and the rating of perceived exertion were recorded. RESULTS: There was significant main effect on blood lactate concentrations seen from recovery modality across all the trials ( p = .038, eta2 = .088). The mean difference across the trials for blood lactate concentration when comparing the active recovery modality to the passive recovery modality was -1.51 mmol/l ( p = .038, 95% CI [-2.92, -0.86]). There was only a significant interaction effect between the trials and recovery duration on blood lactate concentration (p = .002, eta2 = .118). Only an interaction effect between the trials and recovery duration on the rating of perceived exertion was found (p = .034, eta2 = .065). No main or interaction effects were found for either sprint times or heart rate. CONCLUSION: Active recovery is more beneficial for lactate clearance when compared to passive recovery during high-intensity interval training. The effect of recovery duration on lactate clearance and sprint performance must be further investigated.

Book excerpt: Lymphocytes are one of many leukocytes which exert a biphasic response to acute intense resistance exercise. Exercise volume (i.e. total work) has been shown to have an immunomodulatory effect. This study evaluates the effect of total work performed during an intense resistance exercise protocol on lymphocyte concentrations in the circulation. Untrained, college-aged (18-35) males who performed high amounts of work (HW) were compared to those who performed low amounts of work (LW). Resistance exercise testing consisted of 6 sets of 10 repetitions of the squat exercise with 2 minutes rest between sets. Both HW and LW performed the same relative intensities (~60% 1RM) throughout the test. At 15 min post-exercise the HW group displayed a significantly higher amount of NK cells in circulation when compared to the LW group. No significant differences were found between groups for any other lymphocytes or physiological responses (i.e. lactate, heart rate), however, both groups suffered lymphocyte suppression 60 min post-exercise. Differing strength levels and thus varied total work performances during a relative acute heavy resistance exercise bout did not result in differences in the time course or pattern of immunomodulation during recovery from exercise. Elevations in NK cell concentrations in the HW group point toward an influence of total work on differential NK cell recruitment patterns in males.
