Book Stress intensity Factor for a Cracked Sheet with Riveted and Uniformly Spaced Stringers

Download or read book Stress intensity Factor for a Cracked Sheet with Riveted and Uniformly Spaced Stringers written by and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stress-intensity factor and forces in the most highly loaded rivet and stringer were calculated for a cracked sheet with riveted and uniformly spaced stringers. Two symmetrical cases of crack location were considered - the case of a crack extending equally on both sides of a stringer and the case of a crack extending equally on both sides of a point midway between two stringers. The complete results are presented on design graphs for systematic variations of crack lengths much less than the stringer spacing. Also, the forces in the most highly loaded stringer and rivet asymptotically approach limiting values for increasing crack length. The stress-intensity factor and the limiting values of the stringer and rivet forces are smaller for stiffer or more closely spaced stringers or for more closely spaced rivets.

Book The Effect of Broken Stringers on the Stress Intensity Factor for a Uniformly Stiffened Sheet Containing a Crack

Download or read book The Effect of Broken Stringers on the Stress Intensity Factor for a Uniformly Stiffened Sheet Containing a Crack written by Clarence C Poe (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A linear elastic stress analysis was made of a centrally cracked sheet stiffened by riveted, uniformly spaced and sized stringers. The stress intensity factor for the sheet and the load concentration factor for the most highly loaded stringer were determined for various numbers of broken stringers. A broken stringer causes the stress intensity factor to be very high when the crack the crack tip extends beyond several intact stringers. A broken stringer also causes an increase in the load concentration factor of the adjacent stringers. The calculated residual strengths and fatigue-crack growth lives of a stiffened aluminum sheet with a broken stringer were only slightly less than a sheet with all intact stringers and were still much higher than those of an unstiffened sheet. The strengthens and lives with a broken stringer were also higher for stiffer and more closely spaced stringers and rivets -- much as when all stringers are intact.

Book The Practical Use of Fracture Mechanics

Download or read book The Practical Use of Fracture Mechanics written by D. Broek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the use of fracture mechanics for the solution of practical problems; academic rigor is not at issue and dealt with only in as far as it improves insight and understanding; it often concerns secondary errors in engineering. Knowledge of (ignorance of) such basic input as loads and stresses in practical cases may cause errors far overshadowing those introduced by shortcomings of fracture mechanics and necessary approximations; this is amply demonstrated in the text. I have presented more than three dozen 40-hour courses on fracture mechanics and damage tolerance analysis, so that I have probably more experience in teaching the subject than anyone else. I learned more than the students, and became cognizant of difficulties and of the real concerns in applications. In particular I found, how a subject should be explained to appeal to the practicing engineer to demonstrate that his practical problem can indeed be solved with engineering methods. This experience is reflected in the presenta tions in this book. Sufficient background is provided for an understanding of the issues, but pragamatism prevails. Mathematics cannot be avoided, but they are presented in a way that appeals to insight and intuition, in lieu of formal derivations which would show but the mathematical skill of the writer.

Book Concepts in Fail safe Design of Aircraft Structures

Download or read book Concepts in Fail safe Design of Aircraft Structures written by David Broek and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to obtain an appraisal of the state of the art of fail-safe design, the author made an investory of fail-safe design methods applied by various aerospace companies and of research work relevant to the engineering approach of fatigue-crack propagation and residual strength. This memorandum is based on information from discussions with personnel of several companies and research laboratories, with the main emphasis on plane stress and transitional fracture behavior. The memorandum presents a brief description of the general approach to the fail-safe problem, an analysis of several of the existing methods that use this approach, including their shortcomings, and a summary of the data required for a good fail-safe design. A specific approach proposed for the presentation in MIL-HDBK-5 of data pertinent to the fail-safe design concept is evaluated in terms of its applicability to that concept. (Author).
