Book The Effect of Moderate Exercise Induced Dehydration on Cognitive Performance on the ImPACT Test in NCAA Division III Collegiate Wrestlers

Hudson and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether moderate exercise-induced dehydration (DEH) has an effect on cognitive performance on the ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) in Division III collegiate wrestlers. 21 NCAA Division III wrestlers representative of 10 collegiate weight classes participated in the study. Subjects completed the computer-based ImPACT test under euhydrated (EUH) conditions, and immediately following, a standard wrestling practice to induce moderate DEH (2.5-4% body weight loss). EUH status was confirmed using urine specific gravity and body weight (BW) measurements of subjects. Percent BW loss (% BW) was determined as the difference between pre and post-practice BW. ImPACT test scores were compared between EUH and DEH conditions to determine if a significant change in specific cognitive performance variables had occurred. Paired t-tests were used to determine significance (p

Book Food Nutrition and Sports Performance III

Download or read book Food Nutrition and Sports Performance III written by Ronald J. Maughan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As sport has become more professionalised over the last thirty years, so the role of nutrition in promoting health and performance has become ever more important to athletes who search for the extra edge to succeed in their respective sports. With the expansion in the provision of medical and scientific support services in elite sport, those who advise athletes have had to become adept at identifying those dietary strategies that will help them to outperform their competitors. This book is structured in two parts. The first analyses the science that underpins the nutritional goals of athletes, with a focus on the implications for athletes during training, competition and recovery. The second looks more closely at the practical implications for different sport categories, i.e. those that focus on strength, power or endurance, and on weight category sports, team sports and winter sports. This volume will be of value to sports dieticians and nutritionists and others involved in the care and support of athletes, as well as to those who take an interest in the subject of sport nutrition and competitive performance. Coaches and athletes will also find much of interest here. This book is based on the proceedings of the third in a series of Consensus Conferences in Sports Nutrition organised under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee. It was published as a special issue of the Journal of Sports Sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sports medicine and sports science are relatively new and rapidly developing fields of knowledge. During the past 2 decades, a significant body of scientific knowledge has been published in these areas. However, there is a demand for practical ref- ences which address sports medicine and science in the context of different sports. This demand is higher in some sports including combat sports, which are highly physically and mentally demanding, and cause challenging issues such as risk of blood-borne infections, weight reduction, head injuries, stress management, and safety for women and children. This book has been developed to meet the needs of the practitioners who work with combat sports athletes in order to improve their health and performance. Combat sports include four Olympic sports (boxing, wrestling, judo, and t- kwondo) and other popular sports such as karate, kick boxing, and Wushu. These sports are popular in most countries of the world, both at competitive and rec- ational levels. Combat sports are practiced by people of different ages for a variety of reasons such as to gain fitness and health benefits and to learn self-defense.

Book Collegiate Wrestler s Compliance and Institutional Perceptions to the National Wrestling Coaches Association NWCA Weight Loss Plan

Download or read book Collegiate Wrestler s Compliance and Institutional Perceptions to the National Wrestling Coaches Association NWCA Weight Loss Plan written by Colleen A. Shotwell and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998, the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Committe on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports implemented more stringent rules and guidelines regarding its wrestling weight class certification program. These change were the results of the deaths of three young apparently healthy collegiate athletes. These wrestlers were engaged in similar rapid weight loss (RWL) programs to qualify themselves for competition. This protocol for RWL promoted dehydration. Consequently, the NCAA mandates wrestlers descend to minimum wrestling weight at a rate of 1.5% of body weight loss per week; but few researchers have examined wrestler's compliance to this 1.5% decent rule prior to the first competition. To evaluate intercollegiate wrestler's compliance and institution's perceptions to the National Wrestling Coaches Association's (NWCA) Optimal Performance Calculator (OPC) weight loss plan.
