Download or read book Racial Differences in Job Satisfaction written by Michael K. Moch and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several studies have documented differential job satisfaction by race. This paper combines structural, cultural, social and social psychological factors in an attempt to explain some of these differences. It was found that these factors account for a modest amount of the differences in satisfaction for black and white employees. Differential work assignments account for some of this difference. The importance employees place on interpersonal relations and the degree to which they are integrated into or isolated from friendship relationships also have an impact. Although there is a significant difference between races in their vertical position in the organization, this difference does not acount for differential job satisfaction, net of the other factors. Although these factors help explain some of the differential job satisfaction between Blacks and Whites, they do not account for significantly higher levels of job satisfaction reported by Mexican Americans. To explain some of this difference, employees' perceived relative deprivation was considered. Controlling for other factors, however, relative deprivation was not significantly associated with job satisfaction. It is concluded that other explanations must be sought to explain differential job satisfaction by race and that there are different determinants for members of different races.

Download or read book Individual and Society written by Lizabeth A. Crawford and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-14 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike other texts for undergraduate sociological social psychology courses, Individual and Society covers each of the three research traditions in sociological social psychology—symbolic interactionism, social structure and personality, and group processes and structures. With this approach, the authors make clear the link between sociological social psychology, theory, and methodology. Students will gain a better understanding of how and why social psychologists trained in sociology ask particular kinds of questions; the types of research they are involved in; and how their findings have been, or can be, applied to contemporary societal patterns and problems. This new, third edition makes the emphasis on social inequality within sociological social psychology, a key theme in earlier versions of the book, more salient throughout the text by including new or expanded discussions of intersectionality, positionality, the experiences of gender and sexual minorities, racial microaggression, contemporary social movements, and the complexities of allyship. Other additions to the text address the ubiquity of the Internet and social media, where the authors consider how these phenomena have shaped the experiences of Generation Z, the first “digital natives,” and altered individuals’ self-concepts and social relationships. Engaging exercises and group activities are also embedded within each chapter to enhance students’ readiness to reflect and think critically about the social world around them and to improve their understanding of the different dimensions of sociological social psychology and how they relate to everyday life.

Download or read book Illusions of Opportunity written by Sonia Ospina and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employees expect organizations to offer an equitable distribution of rewards in promotion, compensation, and job challenge to those who work hard. According to Sonia Ospina, the realities of the workplace confound that expectation, since organizational practices of labelling and ranking individuals create inequality. For this reason, Ospina suggests that an appreciation of how employees experience and resolve the contradiction between expectation and reality is prerequisite to understanding work attitudes in contemporary organizations.
