Book The Effect of Projectile Shape on the Ballistic Perforation of Thin Metal Plates

Download or read book The Effect of Projectile Shape on the Ballistic Perforation of Thin Metal Plates written by Thomas E. Fields and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of projectile shape on thin target perforation was investigated for five projectile shapes impacting aluminum and steel targets at 506 m/sec. A discarding sabot technique was developed for launching the unjacketed steel projectiles and accurate perforation velocity losses were measured using a ballistic pendulum with the targets mounted in the center of the pendulum. The five projectile shapes included two pointed ogives, a shape similar to a Russian 14.5 mm AP core, a cylinder and a cone. The two ogive shapes were the most efficient penetrators while the velocity loss of the Russian projectile averaged 15% higher. The cone, which caused a combined petaling and plugging target failure, was the least effective shape. Calculations with two approximate perforation theories predicted smaller velocity losses than were found experimentally. (Author).

Book Studies in the Perforation of Thin Metallic Plates by Projectile Impact I Normal Impact of Circular Cylinders

Download or read book Studies in the Perforation of Thin Metallic Plates by Projectile Impact I Normal Impact of Circular Cylinders written by L. E. Fugelso and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ballistic parameters were determined analytically and experimentally for the perforation of aluminum alloy and titanium alloy plates by normal impact of steel cylinders. Analytical predictions of the perforation parameters were prepared on the basis of theoretical models of the perforation process. Experimental determination of the critical perforation and residual velocities discriminated among the various models and further experimentation verified the analytical description of the perforation process. One model of perforation was found which adequately describes the ballistic parameters for the normal impact of steel cylinders into aluminum alloy and titanium alloy plates for impact velocities up to 5000ft/sec and plate thicknesses up to 0.25 inches.

Book Terminal Ballistics

Download or read book Terminal Ballistics written by Zvi Rosenberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively discusses essential aspects of terminal ballistics, combining experimental data, numerical simulations and analytical modeling. Employing a unique approach to numerical simulations as a measure of sensitivity for the major physical parameters, the new edition also includes the following features: new figures to better illustrate the problems discussed; improved explanations for the equation of state of a solid and for the cavity expansion process; new data concerning the Kolsky bar test; and a discussion of analytical modeling for the hole diameter in a thin metallic plate impacted by a shaped charge jet. The section on thick concrete targets penetrated by rigid projectiles has now been expanded to include the latest findings, and two new sections have been added: one on a novel approach to the perforation of thin concrete slabs, and one on testing the failure of thin metallic plates using a hydrodynamic ram.

Book Effects of Projectile Shape on Thin Plate Perforation at Normal Incidence

Download or read book Effects of Projectile Shape on Thin Plate Perforation at Normal Incidence written by R. T. Sedgwick and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical, numerical and experimental results are compared in a systematic investigation of the effects of projectile shaped on thin plate perforation. The analysis of five low velocity impact involving optimal-, ogival-, Russian-, conical- and cylindrical-head projectile comprise the study. A three-way comparison of simple perforation theory predictions, HELP numerical solutions and available experimental data is made for the five problems. The HELP solutions are in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Although the simple perforation formulas are sensitive to projectile shape, they do not provide adequate residual energy predictions. Further numerical studies of this type should provide additional insight into the penetration process and eventually lead to improved perforation formulas. (Author).

Book Normal Impact and Perforation of Thin Plates by Hemispherically Tipped Projectiles I Analytical Considerations

Download or read book Normal Impact and Perforation of Thin Plates by Hemispherically Tipped Projectiles I Analytical Considerations written by N. Levy and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reprint is about a very elementary analysis of the penetration and performation processes involved in normal impact of thin plates by hemispherically-tipped cylindrical hard-steel projectiles. It is principally directed towards the determination of the force and central plate deflection histories both below and above the ballistic limit. These parameters are considered to be two of the most important facets of the event, and they can be evaluated rapidly and with negligible computational cost. The theory is based on a lumped-parameter system that includes the radial variation in axial target displacement and is completely predictive below the ballistic limit, but requires either measured information from the plug separation process or corresponding reasonable geometric and kinematic assumptions for a solution in the perforation domain. Surprisingly, considering the simplicity of the theoretical approach, the calculated values were found to be in excellent agreement below and in reasonable correspondence above the ballistic limit with data for soft aluminum targets. Somewhat greater deviations between predictions and measurements for mild steel plates are attributed to the neglect of rate effects in the constitutive description of this material. In spite of the existence of a variety of more complicated phenomenological representations, the current model appears to be the only one that forecasts the drop in peak force upon initiation of perforation and the subsequent simultaneous motion of plug and target plate; both of these features were verified by experiment. Keywords: Impact tests; Perforations; Thin plates; Steel plates.

Book Simulation of Ballistic Impacts in Steel Plates

Download or read book Simulation of Ballistic Impacts in Steel Plates written by Jordi Fernandez Ambrosini and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, a numerical study of normal perforation of 12mm thick steel plates impacted by 20mm diameter conical shaped projectiles is reported. A thorough analysis on specific experimental data results serves as basis for the numerical simulations of the problem, which has been performed using a finite element code, ABAQUS-Explicit with a fixed mesh for the bullet and plate. To define the thermoviscoplastic behaviour of the material constituting the plate, the Johnson–Cook model has been used. This homogeneous behaviour has been coupled with the Johnson–Cook fracture criterion to predict completely the perforation process. The simulations cover a range of impact velocities from 200 to 500m/s. Both qualitative and quantitative predictions of projectile-plate behaviour are compared to the experimental ones from the literature, and good agreement is obtained in general. The analysis considers the influence of adaptive meshing of the plate, interaction and damage of the target plate among others. A specific discussion about damage is reported highlighting its influence on the model. The final results and discussion can be of interest for the design of an optimised version of the model.

Download or read book Terminal Ballistics written by Zvi Rosenberg and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively discusses essential aspects of terminal ballistics, combining experimental data, numerical simulations and analytical modeling. This new, 3rd edition reflects a number of recent advances in materials science, such as the use of polyurea layers on metallic plates in order to improve their ballistics. In addition, more data and analyses are now available on dwell and interface defeat in ceramic tiles coated with polymers, and are presented here. Lastly, the new edition includes new results, numerical and empirical, concerning the DIF issue in brittle solids, as well as the “upturn” phenomenon in the stress–strain curves of ductile solids. The author also added a new analysis of concrete penetration experiments which accounts for the scaling issue in this field. This is a new,and important, addition which we are happy to announce. They also added some new insights into the interaction of EEP’s and FSP projectiles with metallic plates. Throughout the book, the authors demonstrate the advantages of the simulation approach in terms of understanding the basic physics behind the phenomena investigated, making it a must-read for all professionals who need to understand terminal ballistics.

Book The Effect of Projectile Nose Shape Upon Ballistic Limit Velocity Residual Velocity and RICOCHET Obliquity

Download or read book The Effect of Projectile Nose Shape Upon Ballistic Limit Velocity Residual Velocity and RICOCHET Obliquity written by Thomas W. Ipson and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Target vulnerability analyses consider ballistic penetrators which have various nose shapes. Nose shape often undergoes changes during the target penetration process due to deformation. It is important that the effects of nose shape upon ballistic perforation dynamics be known and accounted for in vulnerability analyses. An experimental firing program was conducted in which rigid penetrators having three different nose shapes were fired against steel plate. Experimental data generated concerned ballistic limit velocity, residual velocity, and ricochet obliquity. Experimental data were compared with predictions of analytic models. The prediction models were modified to reflect the results of experiments.

Book Projectile Impact

Download or read book Projectile Impact written by S. Syngellakis and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High energy impact phenomena have been investigated by engineers of various backgrounds and disciplines. Structures often need to be designed against impact or potential attack and on the other hand the removal of decommissioned structures may be achieved by shaped charge impact, alternatively known as explosive cutting. The topic of ballistic impact is wide-ranging and encompasses various levels of kinetic energy input as well as a multitude of projectile-target materials and geometries. It has thus become the object of many experimental and analytical investigations resulting in numerous sparsely-spread articles in periodicals and conference proceedings as well as monographs narrowly focusing on specific types and ranges of impact scenarios. This volume describes a broad spectrum of analytical and experimental work in this area, thus providing considerable insight into the complexity and diversity of impact phenomena. By addressing a significant number of important issues it combines, rather uniquely, subject breadth and density with in-depth study of impact events of great engineering interest.
