Book excerpt: In previous work, the room temperature mechanical properties of an Al-10Mg-0.1Zr alloy were evaluated after simulated, superplastic forming at a temperature of 300 C (573K). A variation of ductility from 1 to 14% elongation was observed in the room temperature test data. To examine the cause of this variability, the processing schedule was changed to one incorporating more severe reductions during rolling. This resulted in a lesser range of variability in room temperature ductility, but the material no longe behaved superplastically. Elongations at 300 C of only 161% at a maximum were recorded although the small grain size required for good superplasticity apparently was developed. SEM and optical microscopy was then done to investigate the cause of this loss of superplastic behavior. Book excerpt: The room temperature mechanical properties of three superplastic, high-Magnesium, Aluminum-Magnesium alloys (Al-10%Mg-0.1%Zr, Al-10%Mg-0.5%Mn, Al-10%Mg-0.4%Cu) were evaluated after simulated superplastic forming at warm temperature. The alloys were initially processed to produce superplastic response. They were then deformed at 300 C to stains of 100 to 200 % at strain rates of 1,700 S or 170 S and samples remachined for ambient temperature testing. Results indicate yield strengths of about 276 MPa (40 KSI) are attainable with ductility varying from about 1 to 14 percent elongation at fracture. Ultimate strengths correspondingly vary up to about 517 MPa (75 KSI). Origin of the variability of the ductility is considered.

The three variables investigated were: (1) time at temperature during warm rolling; (2) strain rate during rolling (by varying reduction per pass); and (3) total strain. After the material was warm rolled, samples were tension tested at 300 C and at strain rates varying from .0000667/S to .167/S. The greatest superplastic ductilities were achieved in material experiencing the largest total strain, lowest strain rate and most prolonged reheating time during warm rolling. The results are consistent with a model for structure development based on continuous recrystallization. Book excerpt: The effects of rolling temperature and reheating interval between consecutive rolling passes on the superplastic response of two Al-Mg alloys were investigated. The alloys were Al-8%Mg0.1%Zr and Al-10%Mg-0.1%Zr (wt. pct.). The effects of varying the process parameters were observed on resultant superplastic ductility during testing at 300 C. The data support a model for microstructure evolution during processing by a mechanism of continuous recrystallization (CRX). The model for CRX assumes that dislocations recover to sub boundaries which are stabilized by precipitates, of size on the order of one micron, located at nodes of the substructure. Book excerpt: The superplastic deformation exhibited by metals with different grain sizes and their corresponding deformation mechanism influences the industrial metal-forming processes. The coarse-grained materials, which contain grain size greater than 20¬†Œom, exhibited superplastic deformation at high homologous temperature and low strain rate of the order of 10,àí4¬†s,àí1. Fine grain materials (1,Äì20¬†Œom) are generally considered as favorable for superplastic deformation. They possess high-strain-rate sensitivity ,Äúm,Äù value, approximately, equal to 0.5 at the temperature of 0.5 times the melting point and at a strain rate of 10,àí3 to 10,àí4¬†s,àí1. Ultrafine grains (100¬†nm to less than 1¬†Œom) exhibit superplasticity at high strain rate as well as at low temperature when compared to fine grain materials. It is attributed to the fact that both temperature and strain rates are inversely proportional to the grain size in Arrhenius-type superplastic constitute equation. The superplastic phenomenon with nano-sized grains (10¬†nm to less than 100¬†nm) is quite different from their higher-scale counterparts. It exhibits high ductility with high strength. Materials with mixed grain size distribution (bimodal or layered) are found to exhibit superior superplasticity when compared to the homogeneous grain-sized material. The deformation mechanisms governing these superplastic deformations with different scale grain size microstructures are discussed in this chapter.
