Book Light Metal Alloys Applications

Download or read book Light Metal Alloys Applications written by Waldemar Alfredo Monteiro and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lightweight alloys have become of great importance in engineering for construction of transportation equipment. At present, the metals that serve as the base of the principal light alloys are aluminum and magnesium. One of the most important lightweight alloys are the aluminum alloys in use for several applications (structural components wrought aluminum alloys, parts and plates). However, some casting parts that have low cost of production play important role in aircraft parts. Magnesium and its alloys are among the lightest of all metals and the sixth most abundant metal on earth. Magnesium is ductile and the most machinable of all metals. Many of these light weight alloys have appropriately high strength to warrant their use for structural purposes, and as a result of their use, the total weight of transportation equipment has been considerably decreased.

Book Effect of Alumina Particle Additions on the Aging Kinetics of 2014 aluminum Matrix Composites

Download or read book Effect of Alumina Particle Additions on the Aging Kinetics of 2014 aluminum Matrix Composites written by Christopher Paul Harper and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) was conducted on 2014 aluminum, 2014 aluminum reinforced with 10 and 15 percent by volume of alumina particles, 2024 aluminum, and a A1/4%Cu alloy. Electrical resistivity and matrix micro-hardness measurements were conducted on the 2014 aluminum alloy and the metal matrix composites (MMC) during isothermal aging. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and DSC were used to identify the metastable phases formed in the 2014 aluminum alloy. The effect of alumina particle addition on the precipitation, growth and thermal stability of the metastability phases in the 2014 aluminum alloy and MMC were studied. Results were used to characterize the effect of the alumina reinforcement on the aging kinetics of the 2014 aluminum alloy matrix.

Book Effect of the Processing Conditions on the Microstructural Features and Mechanical Behavior of Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Effect of the Processing Conditions on the Microstructural Features and Mechanical Behavior of Aluminum Alloys written by Tomasz Tański and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminum and aluminum alloys are widely used for aircraft structures, where they are subjected to demanding conditions and where is an increased demand for weight reduction and fuel savings. Aluminum comprises 8% of the earth?s crust and is, therefore, the most abundant structural metal. Its production since 1965 has surpassed that of copper and now comes next to iron. This increased use of aluminum alloys leads to a need for deeper understanding of their mechanical properties and the impacts of processing parameters. The mechanical properties can determine by controlling the microstructures of the alloys. For example, precipitation hardening is the main strengthening mechanism improving the tensile and yield strength. Solute atoms, precipitates and dispersoids influences to the yield strength, since they act as distributed pinning points for mobile dislocations, thus increasing the shear stress required to move the dislocations. Another approach is the manipulation of a grain size that can be performed by alloying or plastic deformation processes. Therefore, the precise understanding of each mechanism that can influence the properties of aluminum and its alloys is very important. The aim of this chapter is to shed light on the influence of the processing history on the microstructure and mechanical properties.

Book The Effect of Potential on the Corrosion Fatigue Behavior of a Precipitation Hardened Aluminum Alloy

Download or read book The Effect of Potential on the Corrosion Fatigue Behavior of a Precipitation Hardened Aluminum Alloy written by E. F Smith (III.) and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue experiments were conducted on polycrystalline and monocrystalline samples of a high purity Al alloy in the peak-hardened heat treatment condition. These experiments were conducted in dry laboratory air and in 0.5 N NaCl solutions at the corrosion potential and at applied potentials cathodic to the corrosion potential. It has been shown that saline solutions severely reduce the fatigue resistance of the alloy, resulting in considerable amounts of intergranular crack initiation and propagation under freely corroding conditions for polycrystalline samples. Applied cathodic potentials resulted in still larger decreases in fatigue resistance and, for polycrystals, increased the degree of transgranular crack initiation of propagation.
