Book The Effect of Pre departure Preparation on Student Intercultural Development During Study Abroad Programs

Download or read book The Effect of Pre departure Preparation on Student Intercultural Development During Study Abroad Programs written by Stephanie Shaheen and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The question addressed in this project is whether pre-departure preparation can help students to gain intercultural competencies when they study abroad, especially on shorter length programs. Specifically, the following research questions were examined; 1) How does a pre-departure orientation course titled Intercultural Experiential Learning (IS 693) affect the cultural learning for students on study abroad programs? 2) How do the changes in intercultural learning of students on study abroad programs compare with students who studied abroad without the pre-departure orientation course, and with students who did not study abroad, as measured by the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) post-test scores on the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS)? 3) What dynamics or factors influence the nature of student learning about intercultural competence on study abroad programs? A mixed method comparative study using qualitative and quantitative research was conducted with three groups of students. A pre-test/post-test measured change in participant behavior. The IDI and DMIS scores showed change in intercultural development. Both qualitative (interviews and observations) and quantitative (IDI instrument and questionnaires) research methods were used to gain greater insight into the experience of the participants. The statistical analysis showed that students who had the treatment did not have significant increases on their post-test scores over non-treatment students, and no significant difference on post-test scores existed for students who studied abroad when compared with non study abroad students. The statistical analysis also showed that two different conditions increased the likelihood that students would have a significant increase in sensitivity: 1) having parents who have had overseas experiences and 2) being non-minority students (racial and ethnic minorities as well as international students). The qualitative data analysis illuminated other factors that encouraged intercultural growth including: 1) significant intercultural interactions with international peers, 2) not having prolonged negative experiences with international people, 3) having the goal of gaining cultural understanding and students seeing an applicable use in their future career for their experience, 4) the chance to speak with international peers in English on a variety of cultural topics, and finally, 5) being members of the majority race and ethnic groups in the U.S.

Book The Impact of Study Abroad Pre departure Training on Intercultural Interactions

Download or read book The Impact of Study Abroad Pre departure Training on Intercultural Interactions written by Tamara Santos Enriquez and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meaningful interactions between students and host country nationals are integral to the study abroad experience. However, students face challenges that impede or hinder these interactions, such as the dynamics with their co-national groups, language barriers, and cultural barriers. Pre-departure training mitigates these challenges through various approaches, but interventions usually lack a comprehensive theoretical framework that focuses on intercultural interactions. Cultural intelligence specifically focuses on an individual's effectiveness in intercultural interactions, serving as an applicable framework for structuring pre-departure training. By focusing on the metacognitive, cognitive, motivational, and behavioral capacities that constitute cultural intelligence, students can be better prepared for intercultural interactions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of pre-departure training on students' ability to interact with host country nationals during study abroad programs. Understanding students' perceptions of how pre-departure training helped them interact abroad is necessary to assess the effectiveness of pre-departure interventions currently used. By better understanding how pre-departure training does, or does not, prepare students for interactions with host country nationals, institutions can implement specific interventions that meet students' needs, improving the study abroad experience. The study utilized a quantitative research design to conduct research on students who previously participated in a study abroad program offered by a public, four-year university in Northern California within the last 10 years. An online survey was created by the researcher and distributed to 514 students. There were 145 respondents who participated in the survey, resulting in a 28.21% response rate. The research study concluded that current pre-departure training used by the study site addressed the four factors described by the cultural intelligence framework, suggesting that preparation improved students' ability to interact with host country nationals. However, some sub-dimensions of the four factors were not addressed. Students reported that the most helpful features that would help them interact with host country nationals are the presence of, or communication with, previous study abroad participants or host country nationals as well as activities that would promote bonding between the co-national peers before departure. This correlates with the challenges that students experienced abroad, such as spending more time getting to know co-national peers rather than interacting with host country nationals. Activities that focus on self-efficacy, country-specific information, metacognitive strategies, and verbal and non-verbal communication strategies are recommended for future training. Future studies should use a control group and administer the Cultural Intelligence Scale before training, after training, and after students return from their study abroad programs.

Book Intercultural Learning through Study Abroad

Download or read book Intercultural Learning through Study Abroad written by Susan B. Goldstein and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-12 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past three decades, the population of international students throughout the world has steadily increased. Although university students choose to study in locations other than their home country for a variety of reasons, including professional development and disciplinary training, nearly all education abroad programs have intercultural learning as a central goal. In this Element, perspectives derived from cross-cultural psychological research are applied to an investigation of the effectiveness of study abroad as a mechanism for intercultural learning. Effectiveness is broadly defined and includes not only overall favorable program outcomes, such as gains in intercultural skills, knowledge, attitudes, and awareness, but also a recognition that study abroad experiences and outcomes may vary depending upon participants' diverse and intersectional identities. Best practices for facilitating intercultural learning through study abroad are identified and strategies are outlined for addressing the methodological challenges of research in this area.

Book Orientation Models for Summer Education Abroad Programs and the Development of Intercultural Competency

Download or read book Orientation Models for Summer Education Abroad Programs and the Development of Intercultural Competency written by Amy Eileen Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an undisputed need for intercultural and world knowledge, skills and abilities, and a growing focus and interest in education abroad as a vehicle for achieving these learning outcomes. In an effort to advance the understanding of international education and explore specific aspects of short-term education abroad programs, a large and growing segment, this study focuses on how students are prepared, and the intercultural learning and engagement outcomes that result from the experience. This study used a mixed methods, pretest-posttest control group design with 3 groups of students - 2 that studied abroad and received different pre-departure orientations and 1 that remained on campus - as well as data from Hammer's (2003) Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), student journals, trip reports and personal interviews. Qualitative data were used to illustrate the quantitative findings and more fully express the results. Much can be drawn from the results of this study. The trend for each of the research questions was in the predicted direction. The analysis of the posttest Developmental Orientation (DO) scores and DO stages for each student group indicate that students who participated in semester-length pre-departure orientations had the highest net intercultural development gains among the three groups. The 2 study abroad groups combined achieved a larger gain than the on-campus group. While the DO gains were not statistically significant, the DO stage gains were significant between the study abroad and control groups, and between the two groups participating in the different predeparture orientations. The qualitative data seem to support the DO stage findings. Certainly, the constraints of the small size of the groups, the limitations of the design, and the only modest interpretation of the DO stages using a non-parametric test imply that the results of this study should be taken in moderation. The implications of this study are interesting and worth further investigation. They demonstrate the need to better understand education abroad, including the complexity of the individual student experience, the role of faculty and staff in fostering learning outcomes, and pre-departure preparation in developing intercultural competency in undergraduates.

Book Intercultural Communication Instruction

Download or read book Intercultural Communication Instruction written by Lisa Anne Schwenk and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Individuals in possession of skills to communicate appropriately and effectively across cultural boundaries will be those in a position of leadership in a global world. Of the total student population in the United States, less than 1.5% chooses to study abroad, and 55% of those who do study abroad opt for less than a semester living in another culture. Preparing students in advance is essential to maximize the limited opportunity to develop interculturally competent communication skills. Despite the ardent pleas of twenty-seven years of research on the topic, students continue to venture abroad with little to no training, expected to gain vital intercultural communication skills largely through unprepared chance experiences. The pre-departure training program developed for this project attempts to fill a critical gap. Designed utilizing theoretical foundations, the three-day training course provides students with necessary communication and behavioral skills for their sojourn abroad. Intercultural communication competence is considered a vital skill in the 21st century. With a very small percentage of U.S. students participating in the study abroad experience, lack of pre-departure training compromises student ability to develop appropriate and effective communication; this oversight is, ultimately, negligent and dangerous to our nation as a whole. The three-day training course provides students with tools and concepts regarding intercultural communication competence, rhetorical sensitivity, and specific communication behaviors and attitudes to develop during their study abroad experience. A multi-method approach, including interactive lectures, critical incidents, role-play, and cross-cultural dialogues is used in the culture-general training. Sample needs assessments, a complete three-day training course with abstracts for training modules and course materials are included in the project. Training is designed to actively engage the learner, appeal to visual, aural, and kinesthetic learners, and apply concepts from training immediately. Post-training evaluation is also presented.

Book Intercultural Communicative Competence and Short Stays Abroad Perceptions of Development

Download or read book Intercultural Communicative Competence and Short Stays Abroad Perceptions of Development written by Sarah Boye and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2016 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of interculturality being an essential part of a language learner's toolkit is widely accepted. Less certain is exactly what interculturality is and how to determine who has it, who does not have it and, importantly, how to get it: this book is concerned with these questions. The work presented here explores the concept of intercultural communicative competence as an aim of foreign language learning. It examines in particular the role of student mobility and how short stays abroad affect higher education students' perceptions of their development of this complex competence. It explores the coinage of the term intercultural communicative competence and the current debate regarding its definition, usage and usefulness. The work then moves on to describing an empirical study in which students who are studying English at a German university participate in an eight-week short stay abroad to the English-speaking world and are asked about their perceived development of intercultural communicative competence and the ways in which their expectations for the stay abroad are met. Developing intercultural communicative competence is an institutional aim of the stay abroad, and therefore the ways the participants make sense of this competence are of interest. Through case study research and quantitative questionnaires data are gathered, analysed and described. The study shows that even a short stay abroad helps develop intercultural communicative competence albeit in individually different ways.

Book Pre departure Orientation

Download or read book Pre departure Orientation written by Megan Wood and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pre-departure orientation programming for students studying abroad is changing and developing to meet the needs of a wide variety of students participating in a vast range of programs around the world. This paper0́9s research focused on the experiences of students studying abroad on a private provider0́9s overseas programs, referred to in this paper as Study Abroad Program (SAP) and explored the question, 0́−Can providing a one-on-one pre-departure orientation to SAP students studying abroad decrease the incidence of mismatched expectations of program participants and program realities?0́+ To address the incidences of misperceptions or false expectations students were having upon arrival overseas, SAP chose to implement a post-acceptance/pre-departure orientation conversation to better prepare students for their study abroad experience. Two groups of students were asked to respond to questions pertaining to their study abroad experience to learn from their perspective what is important to know in preparation for a semester overseas. To examine if there was an increase in matched expectations after having had the orientation, one group participated in a pre-departure orientation facilitated by SAP and the other did not. There was not a significant difference between the two group0́9s responses, but the data did uncover important aspects of the student experience and what information is valued by students to prepare them for their sojourn abroad and better ways that it may be provided. This research has shown that US students have difficulty dealing with the unknown, and the best way to ease their anxiety is to provide them with practical logistical information. Thereby, when their primary needs are met they may be able to better grasp the more complex aspects of study abroad. The findings will serve as a resource to SAP as well as other program providers and study abroad professionals when designing a pre-departure orientation.

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International education in the United States has become increasingly diverse. No longer is study abroad in higher institutions only accessible to the affluent, white privileged class. With this changing demographic in our student population, so does the need of how we prepare our student cohorts for their study abroad experience. The Intercultural Communication: Pre-Departure Orientation for Study Abroad Students is a project designed to start the process of intercultural communication skills building prior to a student0́9s departure. After exploring the literature about cross-cultural communication, identity formation and cultural humility, this project provides educators with an intercultural communication skill building pre-departure orientation that is ready for implementation. This orientation has been developed in such a way that revolve around cultural awareness and understanding, along with the notion of constant self-reflection. This project also offers recommendations on implementation and limitations.
