Book The Effect of Pegbovigrastim on Health Fertility Culling and Economic Performance During a Full Lactation in Grazing Dairy Cows

Download or read book The Effect of Pegbovigrastim on Health Fertility Culling and Economic Performance During a Full Lactation in Grazing Dairy Cows written by and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early lactation clinical diseases, which affect up to 50% of modern dairy cows, are associated with impaired productive and reproductive performance and reduced longevity; thus, they have an important impact on the economic performance of dairy farming. Around parturition, both immune dysfunction and metabolic challenge, a major factor associated with immune dysfunction, have been linked to early lactation clinical disease. Immune stimulation therapies may be an innovative development that could mitigate this problem. Recently, a long-lasting analogue of bovine granulocyte colony stimulating factor (pegbovigrastim; PEG) has been developed, as a tool to improve immune dysfunction around parturition. This PhD thesis was based on a large randomized clinical trial, in which I evaluated the use of PEG under commercial conditions in grazing dairy farms. In addition, I evaluated whether the metabolic status of the transition dairy cow, as measured by prepartum body condition score and prepartum nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) concentration, was associated with the effect of PEG treatment. First, I focused on the effect of PEG treatment on postpartum [5 to 8 days in milk (DIM)] circulating white blood cell counts. Pegbovigrastim treatment reversed the negative association of prepartum NEFA concentration with circulating white blood cell counts. Then, I showed that PEG treatment reduced the occurrence of a first case of clinical mastitis (CM) during the first 30 DIM, particularly in cows with an over body condition and in cows with elevated prepartum NEFA concentration. Moreover, PEG treatment reduced the hazard of a first case and the rate of total cases of CM during the full lactation, and in cows that experienced metritis, PEG treatment reduced the incidence of subsequent endometritis. In addition, I investigated the effects of PEG on fertility, culling and on the economic performance of cows. I showed that the effect of PEG treatment on fertility and culling interacts with prepartum NEFA concentration. In cows with low prepartum NEFA concentration, no treatment effect was detected. In cows with elevated prepartum NEFA concentration, PEG treatment increased the rate of first insemination and counteracted the negative association of a first case of CM during the first 30 DIM and uterine disease (i.e., retained placenta, metritis or both) with the rate of pregnancy. At the same time, in cows with elevated prepartum NEFA concentration, PEG treatment decreased the hazard of culling. Ultimately, we found that PEG treatment resulted in an overall economic benefit, mostly explained by a reduced cost of culling in PEG treated cows. Altogether, I showed that the beneficial effect of PEG treatment depends on the metabolic status of periparturient dairy cows, and that PEG treatment was particularly beneficial for cows undergoing prepartum metabolic challenge.

Book Genetics of Animal Health and Disease in Livestock

Download or read book Genetics of Animal Health and Disease in Livestock written by Bianca Castiglioni and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-06-02 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wood surface attributes can be established by examining its several different physical or chemical properties. Differences in the wood surfaces occur between the manufacturing and post-treatment processes as well. Understanding how their unique anisotropic molecular organization, chemical linkages, branching, and other molecular features govern micro- and macroscale accessibility is essential for coating and complex modification processes. It is therefore important for scientific as well as practical reasons to qualify and quantify the effects of wood surface treatments and modifications. Challenges still exist to fully understanding the effect of the numerous applied chemicals and the wide range of treatment processes on wood surfaces.

Book Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle

Download or read book Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-02-09 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This widely used reference has been updated and revamped to reflect the changing face of the dairy industry. New features allow users to pinpoint nutrient requirements more accurately for individual animals. The committee also provides guidance on how nutrient analysis of feed ingredients, insights into nutrient utilization by the animal, and formulation of diets to reduce environmental impacts can be applied to productive management decisions. The book includes a user-friendly computer program on a compact disk, accompanied by extensive context-sensitive "Help" options, to simulate the dynamic state of animals. The committee addresses important issues unique to dairy science-the dry or transition cow, udder edema, milk fever, low-fat milk, calf dehydration, and more. The also volume covers dry matter intake, including how to predict feed intake. It addresses the management of lactating dairy cows, utilization of fat in calf and lactation diets, and calf and heifer replacement nutrition. In addition, the many useful tables include updated nutrient composition for commonly used feedstuffs.

Book Embryonic Mortality in Farm Animals

Download or read book Embryonic Mortality in Farm Animals written by J.M. Sreenan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproductive wastage is a major inefficiency in all livestock production with embryonic mortality accounting for a major portion of this loss. Accordingly the Commission of the European Communities encouraged the organisation of a seminar on embryonic mortality in farm animals which was held in Brussels on the 11th and 12th of December 1984. This book contains the text of the papers, discussions and final summary presented at that Seminar. As a background to the Seminar, the extent and timing of embryonic loss was described for farm animals. Particular consideration was then given to the various mechanisms and signals, both embryonic and uterine in origin, that are so far known to be involved in the establishment of pregnancy. Possible causes of embryonic death including physiological, endocrinological, genetic and immunological components were outlined and discussed. The final summary contains general conclusions from the Seminar and recommendations for future research work on this topic. J.M. Sreenan M.G. Diskin July 1985. ******************** THE EXTENT AND TIMING OF EMBRYONIC MORTALITY IN THE COW J. M. Sreenan & M. G. Diskin, The Agricultural Institute, Belclare, Tuam, Galway, Ireland ABSTRACT The extent and timing of embryonic mortality in heifers, normal cows and repeat breeder cows has been reviewed.

Book Milk Quality

Download or read book Milk Quality written by F. Harding and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-14 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milk has played a major contribution to the human diet in many different countries across the world since the dawn of time. The dairy cow was domesticated over 6000 years ago, she was the object of worship in the Middle East 2000 years before Christ, and milk and milk products are mentioned more than 50 times in the Bible. Milk and dairy products have become a major part of the human diet in many countries. It is not surprising therefore, that over many years considerable attention has been paid to improving the quality of milk. We have worked to improve the yield, the compositional quality and the hygienic quality, and have striven to minimise the level of contaminants which can find access to this, perhaps our most natural, unrefined and highly nutritious foodstuff. The chain of people involved in the milk industry extends from milk production-farmers, veterinarians and farm advisors-through transport to processing-quality controllers, manufacturers-and on to retailers, legislators, nutritionists, dairy educators and consumers. All will be interested in the quality parameters of milk which are reg ularly measured for commercial reasons, for trade, for legal requirements and for reasons of nutrition.
