Book Using the Theory of Multiple Intelligences to Increase Fourth Grade Students Academic Achievement in Science

Download or read book Using the Theory of Multiple Intelligences to Increase Fourth Grade Students Academic Achievement in Science written by Linda Davis and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This applied dissertation was designed to increase the academic achievement of 4th-grade students in science. The problem to be solved was that 4th-grade students in a rural elementary school exhibited low academic achievement in science. The researcher utilized the multiple intelligences (MI) theory and brain-based learning to develop the IMPACT strategy. This acronym was based on the essential components in the treatment program: introduce the focus lesson, make it relevant, practice the new concept in MI learning centers, allow time to set goals and reflect on learning, choose an independent learning project, and take time to celebrate. The independent variable consisted of the MI learning centers, and student achievement was the dependent variable. In the one-group/pretest-posttest research design model, the participants were given a pretest, exposed to an intervention program (i.e., the IMPACT strategy), and given a posttest to determine the effectiveness of the intervention. As a result of the intervention, 3 of the 6 expected outcomes were achieved: Twenty students completed and turned in science class work assignments daily, displayed appropriate behavior for learning during science, and displayed a positive attitude about learning in science. Analysis of the results indicated that there was a significant improvement in students' achievement, behavior, and self-esteem. Recommendations based on the results of this applied dissertation are as follows: (a) Students should be given more input regarding learning activities; (b) monthly parental involvement should be encouraged; (c) the school should seeks business alliances and apply for more grants; and (d) a longitudinal study be conducted to investigate the long-term implications of the IMPACT strategy in an interdisciplinary approach. Teachers can use this strategy as a way to increase student academic achievement and to enhance their own professional development. The following are appended: (1) Learning Instrument; (2) Interview Instrument; (3) Climate Instrument; (4) Multiple Intelligences Instrument for Learning in Science; and (5) Multiple Intelligences Journal Writing Instrument. (Contains 5 tables.) [Ed.D. Applied Dissertation, Nova Southeastern University.].

Book Differential Effects of a Multiple Intelligences Curriculum on Student Performance

Download or read book Differential Effects of a Multiple Intelligences Curriculum on Student Performance written by Thanh T. Nguyen and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2002-06-08 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fuller School is one of the six elementary schools in Gloucester, Massachusetts, a small urban community known for shipbuilding and fishing. Fuller students come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds (from public housing facilities to affluent families) and a variety of ethnic groups (including Italian, Hispanic and Vietnamese). With its diverse population, the Fuller School represented an excellent environment to test the use of Multiple Intelligences (MI) as a foundation for its curriculum. This study aimed to examine one of the ten objectives of the FIRST Schools and Teacher Program Grant: "To improve student achievement on standardized tests" by using "multiple intelligences instruction." The results of the California Achievement Test/5 (CAT/5) given at grade 5 tended to show no differences between students in the MI and the traditional school program. Although no association between CAT/5 outcomes and the MI treatment were found, two report-card outcomes at the sixth grade-level--Math and Physical Education--and an interaction of Program-type with Home-language on Music were found to be significant. By and large, the magnitude of these differences was not large enough to conclude that the MI treatment was effective in producing larger standardized test scores than students in the non-MI program. Yet, considering that the MI program emphasizes different kinds of activities and more diverse ways of learning and provides an alternative to the traditional classroom, this result of no differences between programs can be thought of a success for the MI community. Participants in the MI program performed just as well as those who had been in the traditional program. This case study is unusual because public schools rarely assigned their students randomly to experimental programs through a lottery process. Although students were randomly assigned to MI and traditional classrooms, accounting for several additional demographic variables in the studentsÍ personal and family background helped to characterize the differences in student performance in language, mathematics, social studies, science, arts, physical education, and music.Educators should find the results encouraging, even with no differences in test scores and grades, because this indicates that MI approaches are competitive with traditional ones. These findings shed new light on the application of MI and, given the growth in its use, provides a much-needed comparison for those interested in implementing it as one component of educational reform.

Download or read book Proceedings of the 2nd UPY International Conference on Education and Social Science UPINCESS 2023 written by Ari Kusuma Wardana and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-31 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access book. Technology has had a huge impact on education and social dynamics around the world. Since the introduction of information and communication technologies (ICTs), such as the internet, smartphones and social media, much has changed in the way we learn and interact with others. In education, technology has enabled students and teachers to access more diverse and engaging educational resources. With internet access, students and teachers can access educational resources from all over the world and learn about various topics and disciplines. In addition, technology also enables distance learning, which allows students and teachers to connect from different locations. However, there are also negative impacts of using technology in education. For example, excessive use of social media and the internet can cause concentration disorders and addiction in students. In addition, too much reliance on technology can also reduce students’ ability to think critically and solve problems independently. In social dynamics, technology has allowed us to connect with people from all over the world and paved the way for greater collaboration and cultural exchange. However, technology has also brought negative impacts on social dynamics, such as the spread of fake news or hoaxes, cyberbullying, and social media addiction. In this regard, technology can be a very useful tool if used wisely and with proper understanding of its impact. Therefore, to support this, Universitas PGRI Yogyakarta was hold an international conference and Call for Papers The 2nd UPY International Conference on Education and Social Science (UPINCESS) “The Impact of Technology on Education and Social Dynamics” on September 27, 2023. The conference aims to discuss in depth about the impact of technology on education and social dynamics, as well as finding appropriate solutions and strategies to minimize its negative impact and maximize its benefits. Experts, researchers, and practitioners in the field of education and technology from around the world can share their knowledge and experience in this conference, and can encourage collaboration and innovation in this field.

Book The Impact of the Theory of Multiple Intelligences and Teaching Strategies on Reading Instruction

Download or read book The Impact of the Theory of Multiple Intelligences and Teaching Strategies on Reading Instruction written by Chelsea J. Lamb-Vosen and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading is the cognitive process of acquiring information from written text, and all individuals acquire reading abilities differently. Howard Gardner developed the theory of multiple intelligences, focusing on content of learning and relationships between learning and specific intelligences, namely: Verbal-linguistic intelligence, Logical-mathematical intelligence, Visual-spatial intelligence, Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, Musical intelligence, Interpersonal intelligence, Intrapersonal intelligence, and Naturalist intelligence. Several instructional programs, strategies, and techniques are discussed in terms of effective teaching practices for those students with reading difficulties. The research examined in this capstone seminar paper project will assist current and future educators with instruction involved in reading strategies to use for struggling readers.
