Book Impact of Methylphenidate on Working Memory in Children with Attention deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Download or read book Impact of Methylphenidate on Working Memory in Children with Attention deficit Hyperactivity Disorder written by Anne-Claude Valérie Bédard and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background. Empirical evidence and theoretical models of attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) argue that weakness in working memory (WM) is a core deficit. WM refers to the ability to hold and manipulate information in mind. Although robust improvements in the behavioural symptoms of ADHD have been demonstrated with methylphenidate (MPH), few studies have examined MPH effects on WM in ADHD. Objectives. The goals of this thesis were to investigate MPH effects on the modalities (auditory-verbal, visual-spatial) and processing requirements (storage, manipulation) of WM in ADHD, to determine the influence of comorbid anxiety (ANX) on these effects, and to assess the responsiveness of WM measures. Method. A review of the literature examined the extant evidence of MPH effects on WM in ADHD. Findings motivated the design of three doubleblind, randomized crossover studies which used placebo and three fixed doses of immediaterelease MPH on validated WM tasks in children with ADHD. Results. The majority of the studies reviewed reported improvement in WM with MPH, but methodological and demographic variations were observed which were addressed in the empirical studies. Findings from Study 1 revealed that MPH significantly improved visual-spatial storage and manipulation. Study 2 demonstrated that MPH improved the ability to store and manipulate visual-spatial information, with improvements in visual-spatial storage limited to those without comorbid ANX. Also, MPH did not improve auditory-verbal storage but did improve auditory-verbal manipulation, with improvements restricted to those without comorbid ANX. Study 3 revealed that MPH improved performance on all measures of visual-spatial storage, but did not improve performance on either measure of auditory-verbal storage. By contrast, measures of both visualspatial and auditory-verbal manipulation varied in their responsiveness to MPH. Discussion. Results demonstrate that the impact of MPH on WM in ADHD is selective: not all individuals with ADHD showed the same degree of benefit, not all aspects of WM are improved, and not all measures of WM are responsive to MPH. Formal recognition and further investigation of this heterogeneity are essential for clinical, methodological, and theoretical purposes and will further our understanding of the structure of WM, as well as guide treatment for ameliorating impaired WM in ADHD.

Book Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Download or read book Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder written by David Gozal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-10-28 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurobehavioral disorder affecting 5–10% of children and adolescents and 3% of adults. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: From Genes to Patients aims to provide a comp- hensive, state-of-the-art overview of the critical aspects of ADHD, and hopefully will serve as a quick and up-to-date reference source for professionals with an int- est in ADHD. The book is divided into three major areas that follow an historical survey. The first group of chapters deals with current theories on the pathophysiology of ADHD, and focuses on neurotransmitters and the contributions and validity of animal m- els. The second section emphasizes the evaluation and treatment of patients with ADHD, from the day-to-day approach by the clinical psychologist to the more sophisticated anatomical and functional imaging strategies that have emerged in the last decade. In addition, chapters dealing with specific impairments, such as those pertaining to reading, social interaction, and working memory, are also included for more detailed analysis of these important aspects and their respective contributions to global functioning. The third and final section provides an expanded review on the pharmacotherapy of ADHD and the appropriate methods for selection of specific drugs for individual patients based on drug kinetics and gene expression. • Author : Mary V. Solanto
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN : 9780195133714
  • Pages : 434 pages

Download or read book Stimulant Drugs and ADHD written by Mary V. Solanto and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2001 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stimulant drugs are widely used in the treatment of ADHD in children and adults. Hundreds of studies over the past 60 years have demonstrated their effectiveness in improving attention span, increasing impulse control, and reducing hyperactivity and restlessness. Despite widespread interest in these compounds, however, their mechanisms of action in the central nervous system have remained poorly understood. Recent advances in the basic and clinical neurosciences now afford the possibility of elucidating these mechanisms. The current volume is the first to bring this expanding knowledge to bear on the central question of why and how stimulants exert their therapeutic effects. The result is a careful, comprehensive, and insightful integration of material by well-known scientists that significantly advances our understanding of stimulant effects and charts a course for future research. Part I presents a comprehensive description of the clinical features of ADHD and the clinical response to stimulants. Part II details the cortical and subcortical neuroanatomy and functional neurophysiology of dopamine and norepinephrine systems with respect to the regulation of attention, arousal, activity, and impulse control and the effects of stimulants on these systems. Part III is devoted to clinical research, including recent studies of neuroimaging, genetics, pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties of stimulants, effects on cognitive functions, neurophysiological effects in humans with and without ADHD and in non-human primates, and comparison of stimulants and non-stimulants in the treatment of ADHD. Part IV is a masterful synthesis that presents alternative models of stimulant drug action and generates key hypotheses for continued research. The volume will be of keen interest to researchers and clinicians in psychiatry, psychology, and neurology, neuroscientists studying stimulants, and those pursuing development of new drugs to treat ADHD.

This book was released on 2013-06-27 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ADHD in children and adolescents is a neurodevelopmental disorder, which is recognized by the clinicians all over the world. ADHD is a clinical diagnosis based on reliable history, reports from home and school and a physical examination to rule out any other underlying medical conditions. ADHD can cause low self-esteem in the child and impair quality of life for the child and the family. It is known that ADHD is a chronic illness and that clinicians needed to use chronic illness principles in treating it. The last 10 years have seen an increase in the number of medications that have been approved for the treatment of ADHD. This book has tried to address some of the issues in ADHD.

Book excerpt: More than 1 in 7 American children get diagnosed with ADHD - three times what experts have said is appropriate - meaning that millions of kids are misdiagnosed and taking medications such as Adderall or Concerta for a psychiatric condition they probably do not have. The numbers rise every year. And still, many experts and drug companies deny any cause for concern. In fact, they say that adults and the rest of the world should embrace ADHD and that its medications will transform their lives. -- Provided by publisher.
