Download or read book The Effect of Single Gender Instruction on Eighth Grade Students Mathematics Achievement written by David Hammel and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: n the research study, this investigator utilized a non-experimental, causal-comparative design (ex post facto) with archival data to determine the real impact single gender instruction had on eighth grade students' mathematics achievement. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively analyze the benefits of single gender mathematics instruction for eighth grade male and female students, when compared against traditional coeducational instruction. Specifically, the researcher compared students instructed in single gender eighth grade mathematics classes with students taught in traditional coeducational classes by analyzing fall vs. spring Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) computerized mathematics test score means. Additionally, honors vs. non-honors level groupings were analyzed. The number of students being studied (over 2,000 total from across South Carolina) and the instrumentation being utilized (Northwest Evaluation Association's (NWEA) MAP national assessment) distinguished this research project from previous studies and gave it additional validity and reliability. The mean difference in students' fall vs. spring MAP scores were analyzed utilizing a two way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to determine the impact of each main effect as well as an examination of the interaction of both effects. The research showed that the type of instruction (single gender vs. coeducational) and the interaction between the type and level of instruction did not have a significant impact on the students' overall achievement. The level of instruction (non-honors vs. honors) did have a significant effect on the students' learning with non-honors students outperforming honors students on the MAP assessment that was administered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The implementation of mathematical literacy in an eighth grade Algebra classroom can increase academic achievement as indicated by pre- and post- assessment scores. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of implementing mathematical literacy in an Algebra classroom. This action research study determined the implementation of mathematical literacy may increase student knowledge and conceptual understanding of Algebra concepts and standards. The study used statistical analysis of assessment scores. Teaching strategies were used in this action research project that focused on literacy including explicit vocabulary instruction, reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students were exposed to a variety of literacy- centered strategies including collaboration. At the conclusion of the study, the researcher administered the district post- assessment to the students before comparing the results of the assessment to the students' pre- assessment scores. The analysis of the data indicated positive effects through student growth from the pre- to post- assessment scores, indicating mathematical literacy implementation increased student achievement"--Page 6.

Book The Algebra Solution to Mathematics Reform

Download or read book The Algebra Solution to Mathematics Reform written by Frances R. Spielhagen and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we increase mathematics achievement among all students? This book provides a straightforward explanation of how changing mathematics tracking policies to provide algebra instruction to all students by at least eighth grade can bring about changes in both student achievement and teacher performance. Spielhagen chronicles the success of a large school district that changed the way mathematics was delivered and increased success rates across all populations. Featuring interviews with students and teachers, the author shows how all stakeholders were brought into the process of changing policy from the ground up. Offering a model for success that can be replicated by other districts, this resource: Provides a comprehensive account of how mathematics policy that evolved in the United States over the last century has resulted in low math literacy among our population.Addresses the recommendations and counterpoints to the report of the National Mathematics Panel (2009).Includes real-life examples of how stakeholders responded to the policy change that revolutionized mathematics instruction in their district. Frances R. Spielhagen is associate professor of education and director of the Center for Adolescent Research and Development at Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, New York. “Offers an ‘elegant solution’ to a compelling problem in American society that has global implications: Who should study algebra and when? The best-practices approach should be required reading for pre-service and in-service educators and administrators alike. Readers will recognize that preparing students to learn algebra by 8th grade is as much a right as learning to read. It is a right upon which our future depends.” —Susan G. Assouline, Professor of School Psychology, Associate Director, The Connie Belin & Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development, The University of Iowa “Frances Spielhagen’s book offers a thoughtful and detailed response to one of the most important questions of our time—should all students take algebra in 8th grade? With impressive and thorough research, the author considers issues of teaching and learning, as well as curriculum and policy. For all those who care about the mathematical future of our nation’s children, this book is a must read.” —Jo Boaler, Professor of Mathematics Education, Stanford University, The School of Education “In The Algebra Solution to Mathematics Reform, Frances R. Spielhagen shows vividly and precisely how a public school system teaches children to master mathematics skills early—culminating in 8th grade algebra, a critical subject for high school graduation and college admission. Spielhagen’s book precisely demonstrates how to improve real sequential learning for students from the early grades to high school graduation, and successfully into college and life. Thus, this vital book has implications for instruction in all academic subjects, providing a living model for continuity and improvement of student learning.” —Bruce S. Cooper, Professor, Graduate School of Education, Fordham University

Book The Effects of Response to Intervention on the Mathematics Achievement of Seventh and Eighth Grade Students

Download or read book The Effects of Response to Intervention on the Mathematics Achievement of Seventh and Eighth Grade Students written by Annette Sargent Cornelius and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the effectiveness of a system-wide Response to Intervention (RTI) program on the mathematical achievement of seventh and eighth grade students. The study consisted of five district schools with a total of 502 participants. The students were identified as belonging to one of two tiers, which differed in regard to amount of intervention. The first tier (Tier 1) of students only received the regular classroom instruction while the second tier (Tier 2/3) received an additional thirty minutes of intervention strategies. The students receiving interventions, the Tier 2/3 students, were divided into two groups. One group received primarily teacher-directed instruction (TDI) as an intervention while the other group received computer-assisted instruction (CAI) as an intervention. For the purpose of this study, the CAI intervention involved the use of the commercial program, Odyssey Math. The students were benchmark tested at the beginning and end of the 2010-2011 school year using the STAR Math assessment program and also progress monitored on a regular basis. In an attempt to determine the effectiveness of the RTI program, a gain score ANOVA was conducted using the scaled scores of the two tiers from the beginning and the end of the school year. The analysis indicated that Tier 2/3 students did demonstrate greater growth than the students in Tier 1. The gain scores of the two groups of Tier 2/3 were also used in a gain score ANOVA to measure differences in growth. An additional analysis of their mean scores was also conducted using ANCOVA. Both analyses indicated that the CAI group demonstrated greater gains. A third analysis was conducted in order to determine how accurately the STAR Math assessment program could predict student success (reaching either a Proficient or Advanced level) on the state assessment. While the STAR Math program did not accurately predict the students' level in every case, the logistic regression analysis did indicate that the program was successful in identifying struggling students.

Book The Effect of Performance based Assessment on Eighth Grade Students Mathematics Achievement

Download or read book The Effect of Performance based Assessment on Eighth Grade Students Mathematics Achievement written by Jinghua Liu and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the effects of performance-based assessments on eighth-grade students' mathematical achievements and attitudes, compares to the effects of multiple-choice tests. The research questions were explored by administering two different sets of mathematical assessments to two groups: One group used a set of multiple-choice tests as intervening tests, and the other group used performance-based assessments as intervening tests. After completing all of the intervening tests, both of the groups took the same post-test. The data analysis indicated that the group using performance-based assessments as intervening assessments had significantly higher scores than group using multiple-choice tests as intervening tests on the post-test. The students' attitudes toward mathematics did not significantly differ by group. However, closer examination of the raw data suggested a positive relationship between the use of performance-based assessments and increased levels of students' attitudes, interests and motivations toward mathematics.
