Book Thoracic Manipulation in Adults with Mechanical Neck Pain

Download or read book Thoracic Manipulation in Adults with Mechanical Neck Pain written by Oyinade Bokime Agbeja-Akindele and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neck pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder. It can be disabling, and constitutes a high health and economic burden. A large majority of neck pains are of mechanical origin. There has been a growing research interest on optimal interventions but there are no 'gold standards'. Spinal manipulation a form of manual therapy is often used in clinical practice to treat individuals with neck pain. However, in recent time manipulation applied directly to the cervical region has come under close scrutiny because of the potential risk of cervical arterial dysfunction. On the other hand, there is growing evidence for the use of thoracic spine manipulation in treating neck pain. Despite the relatively large number of randomized controlled trials carried on its effectiveness, the evidence of the effectiveness of thoracic manipulation in treating neck pain has been described as inconsistent and inconclusive. Therefore, this systematic review critically appraised, synthesized, and provides a clearer and more accurate overall assessment on the effectiveness of thoracic manipulation in reducing pain and disability in adults with mechanical neck pain.

Book The Appropriateness of Manipulation and Mobilization of the Cervical Spine

Download or read book The Appropriateness of Manipulation and Mobilization of the Cervical Spine written by Ian D. Coulter and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 1996 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents results from the RAND study on the appropriateness of spinal manipulation and mobilization of the cervical spine. The study was designed to ascertain the clinical criteria for the appropriate use of cervical manipulation and mobilization to treat conditions such as neck pain and headache and to document treatment complications. A review was conducted of more than 500 articles from the medical and chiropractic literature. From this extensive review, a set of indications was created for manipulation and mobilization for neck pain and headaches and for subcategories of patient types. A panel was convened of back-pain experts from the disciplines of orthopedics, chiropractic, family medicine, and neurology to rate for appropriateness the indications for spinal manipulation and mobilization. The panelists rated the set of indications individually and then were convened as a group to rate the same indications following reporting and discussion of the individual ratings. This report presents the results of the final ratings and describes the methodology. It should be of interest to clinicians who perform manipulation and mobilization of the cervical spine, to clinicians who work with patients with cervical problems, and to health researchers and others concerned with the appropriate indications for performing manipulation and mobilization.

Book The Effectiveness of Manual Therapy in Cervical Range of Motion Head Repositioning Accuracy and Postural Stability in Patients with Chronic Mechanical Neck Pain

Download or read book The Effectiveness of Manual Therapy in Cervical Range of Motion Head Repositioning Accuracy and Postural Stability in Patients with Chronic Mechanical Neck Pain written by Hon Kit Eddy Siu and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major part of the thesis involved in a randomized controlled clinical trial undertaken to investigate the effects of cervical manual therapy (mobilization and manipulation) on patients with chronic mechanical neck pain. One hundred and forty-seven patients were recruited from the Physiotherapy Department, Prince of Wales Hospital and randomized into a manual therapy (MT) group and a control (CON) group. The age range of the MT group was from 19 to 66 (mean age 46.6℗ł10.0) and that of the CON group was from 23 to 63 (mean age 45.5℗ł9.5). The patients in the MT group received manual therapy, 15-minutes of irradiation therapy (IRR) together with neck exercises listed in a neck exercise pamphlet, whereas those in the CON group only received IRR and neck exercises. All patients received 8 sessions of treatment over a 4-week interval. The outcome measures included subjective pain intensity (NPRS), neck disability (NPQ), cervical ROM, HRA and postural stability (BBS). Assessments were made by a blinded assessor at baseline, immediately post-intervention (completion of 8 sessions of treatment), 3 months and 6 months after completion of treatment. No statistically significant differences were found between the two groups in any of the outcome measures in the baseline comparison. After 8 sessions of intervention over a 4-week period, patients in the MT group had realized greater improvement than those in the CON group in cervical ROM (12.85% vs. 1.11%), HRA (25% vs. 3.32%), postural stability (BBS) (38.3% vs. 17.19%) and NPRS (38.9% vs. 10.2%) (p

Book A Comparison of the Effects of High and Low Velocity Cervical Traction Manipulation on Cervical Pain and Stiffness

Download or read book A Comparison of the Effects of High and Low Velocity Cervical Traction Manipulation on Cervical Pain and Stiffness written by Erik P. De Meulemeester and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study Design: A preliminary case series of 6 patients. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to demonstrate a relationship between the use of cervical traction manipulation and a reduction of cervical pain and/or stiffness and to compare the effectiveness of the high (HV) and low (LV) velocity version of the same technique. Background: Manual therapy and spinal manipulation are commonly used as an integral part of the treatment by a physical therapist for the treatment of neck pain. The use of Translatoric Spinal Manipulation, or TSM, will provide a safe alternative to non-specific multi-segment rotational cervical manipulation. Methods: 3 participants were randomly assigned for each treatment group (HV and LV), with a primary complaint of neck pain. Each participant received 6 treatments in a 2 week period. The subject's cervical mobility and pain was recorded before and after each intervention. The NDI was completed prior to the first and following the last intervention. Results: Visual interpretation shows improvement in ROM for both groups. The LV group reports twice as much significant decrease in self-reported level of pain. All participants reported a significant functional improvement on the NDI scale. No adverse events were reported. Conclusion: The results from this study support the hypothesis that cervical traction manipulation of the cervical spine may immediately improve ROM, pain and function. The completion of the RCT with a larger sample size is needed to evaluate the interaction between the velocity and the effectiveness of the intervention.
