Download or read book In Cancer Patients Does Music Therapy Reduce Anxiety Prior and During Receiving Treatment chemotherapy Radiation and Surgery written by Sherri Eaker and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer patients have multiple factors that contribute to anxiety; for instance, chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Analysis from multiple studies indicates music therapy is a beneficial intervention in reducing anxiety induced from cancer treatments. Music has no side effects; it is economical, easy, and proven effectiveness in relieving anxiety to cancer patients receiving treatments. Music was offered to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, port placement, mastectomy, and wound dressing changes. Patients were allowed to listen to music of their choice, on a MP3 that was provided, for 20-30 minutes prior to treatment and some patients were offered to listen to music during treatment as well. Results showed that music therapy had significantly reduced anxiety in cancer patients.

Book The Effect of Music Therapy on Five year Disease free Survival Rates in Pediatric Neuroblastoma

Download or read book The Effect of Music Therapy on Five year Disease free Survival Rates in Pediatric Neuroblastoma written by Whitney Quitta and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problem: Music therapy is underutilized by healthcare providers. Studies have shown the benefits of music therapy as an adjunct to conventional treatment modalities, but little research has been done on music therapy's effects on pediatric cancer patients. Methods: A PubMed search was performed for peer-reviewed articles written within the last five years that involved the use of music therapy in pediatric oncology patients. Only full-text, English journal articles were selected for this literature review. Results: All articles found support the use of music therapy in pediatric cancer patients, and the original studies performed show that music therapy has beneficial short-term psychological and physiologic effects. Conclusions: Music therapy has a positive significant effect on pediatric cancer patients in a short-term timeframe, but there is little research that assesses how music therapy might affect pediatric cancer patients long-term.

Book Music Therapy as an Intervention to Reduce Psychological Cancer related Symptoms in Adult Cancer Patients

Download or read book Music Therapy as an Intervention to Reduce Psychological Cancer related Symptoms in Adult Cancer Patients written by A'kya Adams (R.N) and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is a debilitating disease that causes both physical and psychological effects, which in turn may result in poor quality of life. Since 2016, more than 1.5 million people have been diagnosed with cancer, and with improvement in treatment modalities, the number of individuals surviving cancer and cancer treatment is expected to grow (American Cancer Society, 2018a). Research examining alternative treatments such as music therapy has been reported to help alleviate pain in cancer patients. However, there is limited research focusing on the use of music therapy as a treatment modality for the psychosocial side effects of cancer such as anxiety and depression of cancer. The purpose of this literature review is to determine the effects of music interventions on individuals who are experiencing cancer-related psychosocial symptoms and their quality of life. -- from the abstract.

Book Essentials of Interventional Cancer Pain Management

Download or read book Essentials of Interventional Cancer Pain Management written by Amitabh Gulati and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a comprehensive review and expertise on various interventional cancer pain procedures. The first part of the text addresses the lack of consistency seen in the literature regarding interventional treatment options for specific cancer pain syndromes. Initially, it discusses primary cancer and treatment-related cancer pain syndromes that physicians may encounter when managing cancer patients. The implementation of paradigms that can be used in treating specific groups of cancer such as breast cancer, follows. The remainder of the text delves into a more common approach to addressing interventional cancer pain medicine. After discussing interventional options that are commonly employed by physicians, the text investigates how surgeons may address some of the more severe pain syndromes, and covers the most important interventional available for our patients, intrathecal drug delivery. Chapters also cover radiologic options in targeted neurolysis and ablative techniques, specifically for bone metastasis, rehabilitation to address patients’ quality of life and function, and integrative and psychological therapies. Essentials of Interventional Cancer Pain Management globally assesses and addresses patients’ needs throughout the cancer journey. Written by experts in the field, and packed with copious tables, figures, and flow charts, this book is a must-have for pain physicians, residents, and fellows.

Book Psychological Health Effects of Musical Experiences

Download or read book Psychological Health Effects of Musical Experiences written by Töres Theorell and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-04-18 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about links between music and health. It focuses on music and public health, and, in particular, the potentially positive and negative effects of listening to and making music on the health of the general population. The book starts out by discussing the protection music offers against adverse effects of stress. It then discusses social aspects of music production and listening and examines religious music within the framework of social functioning. It offers insight into the physiological and psychological effects of music listening, the biological effects of singing, and the use of music in therapeutic situations and the rearing of children. The book concludes by discussing the significance of music for musicians and their health. Although it may seem that music has only good health effects, and therefore all professional musicians should be healthy, not all music effects are positive. The book describes situations in which music has negative health effects and makes clear that there is a pronounced difference between living with music for joy and to earn one ́s living from making music. In the latter situation, performance anxiety may become a factor that affects health adversely.

Book The Impact of Interactive Music Therapy on the Pediatric Oncology Population

Download or read book The Impact of Interactive Music Therapy on the Pediatric Oncology Population written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is an unfortunate truth that a child with cancer will experience pain or anxiety during their battle with illness. Research shows that Interactive Music Therapy is extremely effective at the bedside of hospitalized pediatric cancer patients in reducing pain (Thrane, 2013; Huang, Good, Zauszniewski, 2010; Potvin, Bradt, Kesslick, 2015; Naylor, Kingsnorth, Lamont, McKenever, 2011; Tanriverdi, Aydemir, 2013) and anxiety (Callaghan, Dun, Baron, Barry, 2012; Thrane, 2013; Potvin et al., 2015; Docherty, Cherven, Stegenga, Ferguson, Roll, Stickler, Haase, 2012; Robb et al.,. 2008; Kemper, Bouhairie, Martin, Woods 2008; Tanriverdi, Aydemir, 2013). In cancer centers, the demand is quickly growing for adjunctive therapies to support sick children (Barry, O'Callaghan, Wheeler, Grocke, 2010). The purpose of this project is to review and evaluate current evidence surrounding the use of interactive music therapy for pediatric oncology patients. Implications of the research and methods for implementing holistic and interactive nursing care will be explored.

Book excerpt: RESEARCH QUESTION OF THE HTA REPORT: The aims of this investigation are to - assess the benefit of music therapy (MT) as a therapy accompanying oncological standard therapy by comparing it to no accompanying therapy or other accompanying therapies in adult cancer patients with regard to patient-relevant outcomes, - determine the costs arising from accompanying MT in comparison with a different or no accompanying therapy in adult cancer patients (intervention costs), - assess the cost effectiveness of MT accompanying standard therapy in comparison with no accompanying therapy or other accompanying therapies in adult cancer patients as well as - review ethical, social, legal, and organizational aspects associated with the intervention. CONCLUSION OF THE HTA REPORT: MT as an accompanying therapy in oncology has already been established in the German healthcare system, particularly in the (acute and palliative) inpatient and rehabilitation settings, through service reimbursement as well as its mentions in national guidelines. The present HTA reveals indications and hints of a short-term benefit of MT in comparison with standard care with regard to fatigue, mood swings, anxiety, anxiety & depression, stress/tension, and health-related quality of life as well as, over the course of several sessions, with regard to cancer-related adverse events, fatigue, and mood swings. In comparison with other accompanying therapies (music medicine, mindfulness-based stress reduction), a hint of greater short-term benefit of MT was found with regard to fatigue and subjective well-being. Notably, the available evidence shows a positive effect particularly for comparatively short-term psychological outcomes and, in general, primarily for non-biological outcomes - soon after the intervention. For most biological (clinical) outcomes as well as for persistent psychological conditions such as depression, there is generally a lack of evidence in favour of MT. However, these short-term effects are to be considered in light of the typically precarious, in some cases life-threatening, situation of patients. Furthermore, MT is a non-invasive intervention associated with few ethical concerns and is impossible to conduct without considerable patient motivation and cooperation. The results on the benefit of MT are transferable to Germany if a consistent professional concept and standardized training and/or certification can be assumed to be in place, which is, however, not entirely the case in view of the current lack of regulation. However, a uniform consensus has been reached on the occupational profile as well as (voluntary) certification. Due to differences in reimbursement and local availability, access to MT (in general and in oncology) is not uniformly regulated among inpatient care, the rehabilitation sector, and outpatient care. Due to a lack of data, some questions cannot be answered at this time: No studies were found on the outcomes of coping or activities of daily living, and no study investigating MT as a group intervention was found. Data are insufficient for performing a comparative analysis of the benefit of MT in different cancer entities or for a comparison of curative versus palliative therapy. In the direct comparison with alternative accompanying therapies, MT in the form defined herein was studied in only 3 out of 10 studies, and no studies investigated it in comparison with "sham treatment". No data are available on cost-effectiveness, and estimating the intervention costs is hindered by a lack of data on average treatment duration and frequency of sessions. Only 1 out of the 10 studies was conducted in an outpatient setting. Two ongoing studies on MT from Israel and Germany were found, and their design might potentially produce insights regarding longer-term effects and coping (outcome of "resilience").

Book 19 INPATIENT MUSIC THERAPY EFFECTS ON SELF REPORTED SYMPTOMS IN A CANCER CENTER A PRELIMINARY REPORT

Download or read book 19 INPATIENT MUSIC THERAPY EFFECTS ON SELF REPORTED SYMPTOMS IN A CANCER CENTER A PRELIMINARY REPORT written by Mi Sun Bae and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction:Music therapy has shown benefits for reducing distress in individuals with cancer. We explore the effects of music therapy on self-reported symptoms of patients receiving inpatient care at a comprehensive cancer center. Methods:Music therapy was available as part of an inpatient integrative oncology consultation service; we examined interventions and symptoms for consecutive patients treated by a board certified music therapist from 9/2016-5/2017. Patients completed the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS, 10 symptoms, scale 0-10, 10 most severe) before and after the intervention. Data was summarized by descriptive statistics. Change in ESAS symptom and subscale scores [physical distress (PHS), psychological distress (PSS), and global distress (GDS)] were evaluated by Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results:Data were evaluable for 96 of 100 consecutive patients; 55% were women, average age 50, majority with hematologic malignancies (47%). Reasons for music therapy referral included: anxiety/stress (67%), adjustment disorder/coping (28%), and mood elevation/depression (17%). Highest (worst) symptoms at baseline were sleep disturbance (5.7) and well-being (5.5). We observed statistically and clinically significant improvement (means) for anxiety (-2.3u00b11.5), drowsiness (-2.1u00b12.2), depression (-2.1u00b11.9), nausea (-2.0u00b12.4), fatigue (-1.9u00b11.5), pain (-1.8u00b11.4), shortness of breath (-1.4u00b12.2), appetite (-1.1u00b11.7); and for all ESAS subscales (all pu2019s
