Book Plant Soil Interactions at Low pH

Download or read book Plant Soil Interactions at Low pH written by Robert J. Wright and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil acidity is a major limitation to crop production in many parts of the world. Plant growth inhibition results from a combination of factors, including aluminum, manganese, and hydrogen ion toxicities and deficiencies of essential elements, particularly calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and molybdenum. Agricultural management practices and acid precipitation have increased acid inputs into the ecosystem and heightened concern about soil acidity problems. While application of lime has proved to be effective in ameliorating surface soil acidity in many areas, significant soil acidity problems still exist. Scientists from Alberta, Canada, recognized the need to provide a forum for researchers from different disciplines to exchange information and ideas on solving problems of plant growth in acid soils. As a result of their efforts, the First International Symposium on Plant-Soil Interactions at Low pH was held at Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada, in July 1987. In many acid soil areas, liming materials are not readily available, the cost may be prohibitive, or subsoil acidity cannot be corrected by surface application of lime. New management approaches involving both the plant and the soil are needed in these situations. Progress has been made in the selection and breeding of acid-tolerant plants. However, continued progress will be limited by our lack of understanding of the physiological and biochemical basis of differential acidity tolerance among plants.

Book Soil Phosphorus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rattan Lal
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2016-09-19
  • ISBN : 1482257858
  • Pages : 351 pages

Download or read book Soil Phosphorus written by Rattan Lal and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phosphorus is an essential plant nutrient, but global population growth has dramatically reduced the availability of phosphorus fertilizer resources. Despite this scarcity, there remain numerous problems associated with the excessive and inappropriate use of phosphorus leading to non-point source pollution and eutrophication of natural waters. Identifying appropriate systems for managing soil phosphorus and reducing the risks of eutrophication are needed to minimize the environmental risks. This book focuses on the availability and recycling of phosphorus; regulatory and policy issues of sustainable phosphorus use; and water quality management in agroecosystems pertaining to phosphorus. Sections are dedicated to global phosphorus reserves; cycling and pathways of phosphorus; phosphorus in agriculture; human dimensions and policy intervention; and research and development priorities. Phosphorus is a finite but crucial resource and is an essential element to all life. Sub-optimal availability and nutrient imbalance in the root zone can adversely impact plant growth, and the quality of food and feed grown on these soils. However, the proven reserves of phosphorus can hardly be adequate for a few centuries only. Yet, its misuse and mismanagement has caused severe problems of eutrophication of water and pollution of the environment. Thus, judicious management of soil phosphorus is essential. This volume is specifically devoted to availability and recycling of phosphorus, regulatory/policy issues of sustainable use of phosphorus, and management in agroecosystems in the context of maximizing the use efficiency and minimizing the environmental risks of water quality.

Book Lime and Phosphorus

  • Author : Adane Buni
  • Publisher : LAP Lambert Academic Publishing
  • Release : 2012-03
  • ISBN : 9783848434091
  • Pages : 104 pages

Download or read book Lime and Phosphorus written by Adane Buni and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil is an important factor in crop production and its degradation is one of the limiting factors for sustainable agriculture. Acidification of soil is a natural process with major ramifications on plant growth. As soils become more acid, it becomes increasingly difficult to produce food crops. As soil pH declines, the supply of most plant nutrients decreases while aluminum and a few micronutrients become more soluble and toxic to plants. These problems are particularly acute in humid tropical regions that have been highly weathered. This book is based on field experiment conducted in Sodo Zuria Woreda, Ethiopia ; on Nitisol loam soil with an inherent property of high P-fixation and acidty to study the influence of Phosphorus fertilizer application and liming on nutrient uptake nodulation and yield of haricot bean (Phaseoulus vulgaris). In this book, the effects of the treatments have been thoroughly analyzed and discussed. So this book could be referred by researchers to find out scientific explanations of soil acidity problems and its solution and adoption of the methodologies somewhere else.
