Book The Examination of Perceived Susceptibility and Threat of HIV AIDS in College Students and Their Personal and Response efficacy about Prophylactics

Download or read book The Examination of Perceived Susceptibility and Threat of HIV AIDS in College Students and Their Personal and Response efficacy about Prophylactics written by MacKenzie C. Mixer and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to explore the perceptions of college students' attitudes toward contracting the HIV virus and their perceived efficacy of prophylactics to prevent contagion. This information will be used to propose a health communication campaign about HIV/AIDS among the college student community. A series of demographic and health-related variables (gender, age, last sexual encounter, marital status, age of first sexual encounter, and stigma) will be investigated for potential relationships to the central dependent variables (perceived susceptibility, perceived threat, perceived response efficacy, and perceived personal efficacy). This research is theoretically grounded in Hochbaum, Rosenstock, and Kegels' (1950) Health Belief Model (HBM). While American college students are the largest population to have sexually transmitted infections (STI's), perceptions of communicable viruses have not been studied in this manner with this population while keeping demographic and sexual history relevant. A college-student-focused information campaign that is grounded in theory is suggested after analyzing the results. Results indicated that age of first sexual encounter was a positive predictor of perceived susceptibility to the HIV/AIDS virus in college students and being female increased amount of sexual communication. Results also indicated the HIV/AIDS virus is still highly stigmatized and is primarily associated with homosexuals.

Book The Effect of Perceived Susceptibility of Disease and HIV Testing Among US Young Adult Population

Download or read book The Effect of Perceived Susceptibility of Disease and HIV Testing Among US Young Adult Population written by Ashley Marie Young and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all patients be routinely tested for HIV in all health care settings. It is also recommended that patients who exhibit HIV risk factors (i.e. injection drug use and high risk sexual behaviors) be tested once a year at minimum. In 2009 the highest numbers of new HIV diagnoses were reported for people between the ages of 20 and 24 years of age including 6,237 new diagnoses. The current study utilizes the HBM to examine beliefs associated with preventative sexual health behavior in a diverse young adult population. Specifically, "perceived susceptibility" of HIV was observed as a factor that may affect young adults, aged 18-24 years old, in ever receiving HIV testing. Of the targeted population surveyed, 38.5% reported ever receiving an HIV test. After adjustment for baseline characteristics, a positive relationship was observed between perceived susceptibility and HIV testing. Participants with a "low" perceived susceptibility had 1.40 times the odds of receiving HIV testing than those who perceived no risk (OR:1.40; 95%CI: 1.11-1.76). Those that perceived their risk to be "high/medium" had 2.12 times the odds of receiving HIV testing than those who perceived no risk (OR: 2.12; 95% CI: 1.06-4.23). This research implies a need to educate the US young adult population on the risk factors of HIV/AIDS.

Book College Students Knowledge of Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Willingness to Participate in Screening

Download or read book College Students Knowledge of Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Willingness to Participate in Screening written by Alison Campbell and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An estimated 1.2 million adults and adolescents are living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the United States and approximately 50,000 are newly infected each year. If HIV is left untreated, the disease will eventually progress to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV continues to be a concern in public health, yet the public perception about the severity of the HIV epidemic has declined in recent years. Although research suggests that college students are highly educated on modes of transmission for HIV, they continue to practice risky sexual behaviors that will increase their risk of HIV transmission. The researchers in this study utilized a descriptive, non-experimental, quantitative design to determine college students' knowledge regarding HIV and their willingness to be tested for HIV. Data analysis revealed that college age students were not knowledgeable of HIV. Findings revealed a great need for further education regarding HIV knowledge and HIV testing among college students in the southeastern United States.

Book The Impact of Knowledge and Attitudes Towards HIV and Sexual Behavior in a College Population

Download or read book The Impact of Knowledge and Attitudes Towards HIV and Sexual Behavior in a College Population written by Stephen E. Doyle (M.S.N.) and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to test for factors predicting AIDS-preventive safe sexual behavior, a battery comprising a demographic questionnaire, an AIDS Self-Efficacy questionnaire, a Sexual Behavior Index, and an AIDS Awareness Survey were administered to 118 undergraduate students (ages 19-28, 93% African American) at a predominantly African American state-supported university in the southeastern US. Possible predictors tested were gender, self-efficacy, perceived self-efficacy while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, knowledge about HIV/AIDS, and source of knowledge about HIV/AIDS. Under multiple linear regression, there were statistically significant correlations between each of these predictor variables and safe sexual behavior. Under a full model regression, self-efficacy was the only significant factor to predict safe sex practices. The study supported the effectiveness of the university's system of programs to provide HIV information to students. Implications for nursing are discussed.

Book Knowledge and Attitudes about Genital Herpes and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome Among Future Teachers

Download or read book Knowledge and Attitudes about Genital Herpes and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome Among Future Teachers written by Katherine A. Mix and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study measured knowledge and attitudes about genital herpes and human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) in a sample of future teachers from the College of Education at Oregon State University. The objectives of the study were 1) to determine if students possess accurate knowledge about the two diseases; 2) to measure attitudes toward people with the two diseases; 3) to assess the relationship, if any, between knowledge and attitudes; 4) to compare knowledge and attitudes about genital herpes with knowledge and attitudes about HIV/AIDS; and 5) to compare knowledge and attitudes about genital herpes in 1990 to data from a similar study conducted in 1984. A convenience sample of 150 students was obtained from undergraduate classes in the College of Education during Spring Term 1990. Subjects completed self-administered questionnaires about either genital herpes or HIV/AIDS during class time. Data were gathered using four instruments: A knowledge test, two attitude measures, and a demographic data questionnaire. Statistical tests used for data analysis were chi square, Pearson's correlation coefficient, Student's t-test, two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and repeated measures ANOVA. The significance level was .05. Knowledge scores on the HIV/AIDS test were quite high (mean score 88% correct), while the mean genital herpes knowledge score was relatively low (62% correct). Attitudes toward people with both genital herpes and HIV/AIDS were relatively accepting, but subjects were significantly more accepting toward people with genital herpes. The least accepting responses toward people with either disease occurred in regard to potentially sexual situations (e.g. dating, marriage). There was no gender difference in attitudes toward people with either disease. Attitudes were more positive in response to a vignette of a college student followed by a questionnaire, compared to responses made to a questionnaire only. Correlations were found between more knowledge and more accepting attitudes about both diseases. Finally, genital herpes knowledge scores were higher (mean score 62% correct) than scores from a similar study of genital herpes conducted in 1984 (mean score 57% correct). Attitudes toward people with genital herpes were more accepting in the 1990 sample than were attitudes in the 1984 sample. All findings reported here are statistically significant. Recommendations for future research and education among future teachers concerning sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) include 1) development of methods to transmit accurate information about STD's by personalizing these diseases and relating them to college students' experiences; 2) a research focus upon attitudes and perceptions about STD's among future teachers, including the issue of homophobia, and how these relate to behavior; and 3) thorough teacher preparation about STD's, focusing on accurate knowledge and impartial attitudes that allow this topic to be addressed effectively in the classroom. Future research among the general college student population should address 1) the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and behavior concerning STD's; 2) potential differences in responses made to a vignette followed by a questionnaire, compared to a questionnaire only; 3) students' source(s) of information about STD's, and level of trust in "scientific authority"; 4) possible interactions between religious influence and attitudes about STD's; 5) the existence of a stereotype of HIV/AIDS as a gay, male disease, and how this might affect attitudes and perceptions; 6) differences between males and females in terms of attitudes, especially with regard to homophobia; 7) the effectiveness of personalizing STD education to increase knowledge about and perceived susceptibility to STD's; 8) the interaction between societal values and personal values, and their effect on attitudes about STD's and sexual behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The current study examined psychological factors of HIV risk and compared results of psychological factors between deaf and hearing adults. A sample of deaf and hearing adults was recruited from Florida and Washington, D.C. and administered measures assessing their knowledge of HIV, attitudes about AIDS, risk behavior, perception of susceptibility of contracting HIV, and self-efficacy. The AIDS Risk Reduction Model (ARRM) was used as the theoretical framework because the model contends risk reduction is dependent on more than one psychological factor. Results indicated deaf adults had less knowledge about HIV, less tolerant attitudes about AIDS, and less self-efficacy compared to hearing adults..." - Abstrace (leaf v).
