This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis systematically investigates the factors which influence many animals’ robust adhesion abilities and micro-reversible adhesion mechanisms, including the geometric principles of their adhesion, relative humidity, surface roughness and pre-tension. Studies exploring biological adhesion mechanisms are not only of great significance for the design of advanced adhesive materials and adhesion systems for micro-climbing robots, but also very helpful for resolving the problem of adhesion failure in MEMS/NEMS.

Book excerpt: The operation of combustion engines, both reciprocating and rotary, can be improved in many areas by the reduction of friction and wear. This collection of papers reviews improvements in traditional engines and also in Stirling and Wankel engines, together with future trends in anti-friction coatings. Specific topics covered include: ball and roller bearings, cylinder line materials and finishes, pistons and piston rings, filters and filtration, impact of friction and wear on fuel economy, and engine management regimes to reduce wear. These proceedings would be of interest to engineers and all involved in the pursuit of economy, reliability and longer working life in relation to the whole field of combustion engines.

Book Mechanics of Hysteretic Adhesive Elastic Mechanical Contact Between Rough Surfaces

Download or read book Mechanics of Hysteretic Adhesive Elastic Mechanical Contact Between Rough Surfaces written by Haneesh Kesari and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In experiments that involve contact with adhesion between two surfaces, as found in atomic force microscopy or nanoindentation, two distinct contact force (P ) vs. indentation-depth (h) curves are often measured depending on whether the indenter moves towards or away from the sample. The origin of this hysteresis is not well understood and is often attributed to moisture, plasticity or viscoelasticity. We present experiments, atomistic simulations and continuum mechanics models that will show that hysteresis can exist without these effects, and that its magnitude depends on surface roughness. We explain the observed hysteresis as the result of a series of surface instabilities, where the contact area grows or recedes by a finite amount. We also demonstrate that when this is the case material properties can be estimated uniquely from contact experiments even when the measured P -h curves are not unique. The hysteresis energy loss during contact is also a measure of the adhesive toughness of the contact interface. We show experimentally that roughness can both increase and decrease the adhesive toughness of the contact interface. We show through numerical simulation of continuum adhesive contact models that the contact interface is optimally tough at conditions at which the contact region is at the cusp of the transition through which it turns form being mostly simply connected to being predominantly multiply connected.

Book Contact Angle Wettability and Adhesion

Download or read book Contact Angle Wettability and Adhesion written by K. L. Mittal and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-08-31 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume chronicles the proceedings of the "5th International Symposium on Contact Angle, Wettability and Adhesion" Toronto, Canada, June 2006. Wettability is of pivotal importance in many and varied arenas, ranging from mundane to micro-and nanofluidics to lithography to biomedical. It should be underscored that in the last years there has been burgeoning interest in replicating the so-called a oeLotus Leaf Effecta to create superhydrophobic surfaces. This volume contains a total of 19 papers covering many facets of contact angle, wettability and adhesion. All manuscripts were rigorously peer-reviewed and revised and edited before inclusion in this book. Concomitantly, this volume represents an archival publication of the highest standard. This book (5th volume in the series) is divided into three parts: Part 1: Contact Angle Measurements and Solid Surface Free Energy; Part 2: Relevance of Wetting in Cleaning and Adhesion; Part 3: Superhydrophobic Surfaces. The topics covered include: Fundamental aspects of contact angle and its measurement; solidification contact angles of micro-droplets; microscopic wettability of wood call walls; dynamic vapor-liquid interfacial tension; surface free energy of polymeric materials; surface cleanliness evaluation from wettability measurements; wettability parameters affecting surface cleanability of stainless steel and textiles; wetting and adhesion in fibrous materials; wettability and adhesion of coatings; adhesion of hydrophobizing agents; modulation of surface properties of polymers; graft efficiency and adhesion; relevance of interfacial free energy in cell adhesion; various approaches to create superhydrophobic surfaces; adsorption of surfactants on hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces.

Book Interfacial Mechanics

Download or read book Interfacial Mechanics written by Jane Wang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 1005 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the characteristics of material contact and lubrication at tribological interfaces is of great importance to engineering researchers and machine designers. Traditionally, contact and lubrication are separately studied due to technical difficulties, although they often coexist in reality and they are actually on the same physical ground. Fast research advancements in recent years have enabled the development and application of unified models and numerical approaches to simulate contact and lubrication, merging their studies into the domain of Interfacial Mechanics. This book provides updated information based on recent research progresses in related areas, which includes new concepts, theories, methods, and results for contact and lubrication problems involving elastic or inelastic materials, homogeneous or inhomogeneous contacting bodies, using stochastic or deterministic models for dealing with rough surfaces. It also contains unified models and numerical methods for mixed lubrication studies, analyses of interfacial frictional and thermal behaviors, as well as theories for studying the effects of multiple fields on interfacial characteristics. The book intends to reflect the recent trends of research by focusing on numerical simulation and problem solving techniques for practical interfaces of engineered surfaces and materials. This book is written primarily for graduate and senior undergraduate students, engineers, and researchers in the fields of tribology, lubrication, surface engineering, materials science and engineering, and mechanical engineering.
