Book Using Analytical Tools for Measuring Bank Efficiency and Performance

Download or read book Using Analytical Tools for Measuring Bank Efficiency and Performance written by Tala Mohammad Ali Mahfouz and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lebanese banking sector is considered as the backbone of the Lebanese economy as it is the most active sector; however, little literature is available on the performance and efficiency measurement of this sector in Lebanon. This research project filling the gap by providing a thorough analysis of the performance of the sector over a thirteen year period extending from 1997 to 2009. The analytical tool used is data envelopment analysis (DEA). DEA is a non-parametric frontier approach for strategic performance measurement that evaluates relative efficiencies of banks. DEA window analysis and productivity analysis are used to understand the changes in performance over time. For the purpose of conducting a thorough analysis of the Lebanese banking sector using DEA, this research project sheds light on Lebanon bank performance. Also, this research project covers recent literature on the use of DEA on banking, literature on bank performance in the MENA region, and available literature on the performance of Lebanese banks. This research project builds on the work performed by Osman, Hitti, & Al-Ayoubi, (2008) that was presented at the European and Mediterranean Conference on Information Systems. This research project adds two contributions to the previous paper; it extends the study period by adding five more years (up to year 2009) and challenges the previous selection of input and output variables. The findings show that different input and output variables can change the findings vastly. Also, the research project uncovers the indirect adverse effect of the 2008 global financial crisis on the Lebanese banks efficiency. This finding is interesting in light of the Lebanese banks' increasing total assets driven from the increasing total deposits thus calling for future research directions. Finally, the research project show that productivity improvements in the Lebanese banking sector is mainly driven by technological advancements rather than managerial skills, and hence concludes to the room for banks to invest internally in their organization.

Book Does IT Help

Download or read book Does IT Help written by Toni Ahnert and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper provides novel evidence on the importance of information technology (IT) in banking for entrepreneurship. To guide our analysis, we build a parsimonious model of bank screening and lending. The model predicts that IT in banking can spur entrepreneurship by making it easier for startups to borrow against collateral. We empirically show that job creation by young firms is stronger in US counties that are more exposed to IT-intensive banks. Consistent with a strengthened collateral channel, entrepreneurship increases by more in IT-exposed counties when house prices rise. Regressions at the bank level further show that banks' IT adoption makes credit supply more responsive to changes in local house prices, and reduces the importance of geographical distance between borrowers and lenders. These results suggest that IT adoption in the financial sector can increase dynamism by improving startups' access to finance."--Abstract.

Book Role of IT ITES in Economic Development of Asia

Download or read book Role of IT ITES in Economic Development of Asia written by Soumyen Sikdar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-09 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the contribution of Information Technology (IT) and Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES) in shaping the current and future global economic scenario, with a special focus on Asia, and taking into account the three broad macroeconomic dimensions — growth, sustainability and governance mechanisms. The last two decades have witnessed a structural shift in the world economy due to the tremendous growth in gross domestic product share for the service sector; in fact, service has emerged as the dominant sector and the main driver of GDP growth. This is mainly attributable to the spectacular success of the IT sector in the new knowledge economy. Tradability, technology and transportability – the three T’s – govern productivity growth in today’s services. Growing Asian economies such as India, China and Vietnam, using their demographic advantages, have been reaping the benefits of this boom. The book’s content focuses on recent debates and discussions concerning the issue of long-term sustainability and governance, especially in India, as these companies are facing continuous challenges in terms of international competition, salary inflation, health hazards, scarcity of talent, employee attrition, security concerns, global slowdown and many other technology-related issues. The book further highlights how the increased application of IT-based products and services is resulting in harsh inequalities concerning income distribution in many developing countries of Asia, mainly because of its labor shedding nature, and hence might be detrimental to sustainable development, if suitable policy measures are not implemented to counter these effects. The book provides a wealth of information for researchers, graduate students and political scientists alike, as well as thought-provoking insights for social scientists, policymakers and government officials. It also offers a valuable source of data for business and management professionals, and for members of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Book What Drives the Performance of Selected MENA Banks A Meta Frontier Analysis

Download or read book What Drives the Performance of Selected MENA Banks A Meta Frontier Analysis written by Hichem Ben-Khedhiri and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the effect of financial-sector reform on bank performance in selected Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) countries in the period 1994 -2008. We evaluate bank efficiency in Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Lebanon and Tunisia by means of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and we employ a meta-frontier approach to calculate efficiency scores in a cross-country setting. We then employ a second-stage regression to investigate the impact of institutional, financial, and bank specific variables on bank efficiency. Overall, the analysis shows that, despite similarities in the process of financial reforms undertaken in the five MENA countries, the observed efficiency levels of banks vary substantially across markets, with Morocco consistently outperforming the rest of the region.Differences in technology seem to be crucial in explaining efficiency differences. To foster banking sector performance, policies should be aimed at giving banks incentives to improve their risk management and portfolio management techniques. Improvements in the legal system and in the regulatory and supervisory bodies would also help to reduce inefficiency.

Book Influence of Electronic Banking and the Internet on Lebanese Banking System

Download or read book Influence of Electronic Banking and the Internet on Lebanese Banking System written by Ali A. Darwish and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research project is to show the inflow of technological means that affect business especially Lebanese banks. the Lebanese private sector seeks always to implement technologie sthat are aimed to provide increse in its profits. Electronic Banking is now adapted by foreign banks outside Lebanon (and soon it can be adapted) by the Lebanese banks. There exists in the market an array of advanced machines to serve customers in a faster pace, and as offer them new services to facilitate their daily transactions, thus easing economic business cycle. Internet is the most advanced communication mean in the present time. This network is causing a revolution in data availability. Data availability (liable data that decisions could be based upon) is very important and the more this data is available the more efficient users of this data will be. Most banks are connected to commercial networks that is used to send and receive information locally and on the international level. One major problem facing adaptation of this new technology is the Bank of Lebanon's regulations and the security (world wide problem) of those networks (I will not go into details concerning laws and regulations.) Another important aspect will be acquisition and implementation of new tools and skills resulting from this new technology. This technology is acquired from foreign countries and adapted according to Lebanese characteristics. Sooner or later banks will have to adapt since they are an active sector in the Lebanese economy and time for this shift will not be far.
