Download or read book The Effect of High School Outdoor based Adventure Leadership Programs in Independent Schools on Personal Effectiveness and Locus of Contol written by Jeremy W. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This experiment-based research project examined whether an independent high school outdoor leadership program can effect a change within an adolescent, using the constructs of life effectiveness and locus of control to measure for that effect. Research participants were drawn from Albuquerque Academy, an independent high school that has semester-long outdoor leadership classes, using those students not enrolled in these classes as a comparison. While both of these groups had a small, but statistically significant, increase in life effectiveness the differences between the groups was not significant. There were statistically significant changes in the subscales of active involvement, leadership ability, quality seeking, self-confidence, self-efficacy, social effectiveness, and stress management. For a second analysis, three groups were compared: an Outdoor Leadership Group, an Other Leadership Group, and a Non-Leadership Group. The Outdoor Leadership Group had higher post-test scores than the Non-Leadership Group in the areas of active involvement, cooperative teamwork, self-confidence, and social effectiveness. Both the Outdoor Leadership Group and the Other Leadership Groups reported a higher mean score than the Non-Leadership Group in the pre-test and the post-test in the areas of leadership ability.

Book The Effect of LIFT on Life Effectiveness and Locus of Control

Download or read book The Effect of LIFT on Life Effectiveness and Locus of Control written by Brian T. Merrell and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to measure the effects of the Leadership Inspiration Facilitation Team (LIFT) program on the life effectiveness and locus of control of a group of 6th grade students at Schultz Middle School. The participants consisted of 36 6th grade students, ages 10 to 12 years, from a single public middle school. The participants attended a 2-day summer adventure-based ROPES camp. The Review of Personal Effectiveness and Locus of Control (ROPELOC) instrument was administered at the beginning (pre-test), the end (post-test), and six months later (follow-up). The 12 domains of life effectiveness have been identified, including active involvement, cooperative teamwork, leadership ability, open thinking, quality seeking, self confidence, self efficacy, social effectiveness, stress management, time efficiency, coping with change, and overall effectiveness. Two domains of locus of control were identified: external and internal. Composite ROPELOC, subscale, and gender data were all analyzed using t-tests of independent samples. The analysis showed no significant improvement in participants' composite ROPELOC score between the pre, post, and follow-up. However, there was an increase between the pre and post, although the increase was not at a significant level. Significant increases in participants' scores were found in 3 of the 14 ROPELOC subscales: cooperative teamwork, coping with change, and external locus of control. Significance for cooperative teamwork was found between the pre-test and post-test. Significance for coping with change and external locus of control was found between the pre-test and follow-up, as well as between the post-test and follow-up using a significance of .05. Gender was found to have made no difference in composite ROPELOC scores. Participants in the LIFT summer program have increased self-perceptions of life effectiveness at the immediate conclusion of the program. The degree of significance has yet to be determined, and the length of significance is still in question. Researchers maintain that positive youth development is a complex myriad of interventions. Positive youth development has taken a proactive shift to promote healthy development outcomes for all youth, in addition to reducing long-term negative outcomes of at-risk youth and has emerged into its own as an independent field of study. In addition, positive youth development is resulting from the combination of several factors that lead to the development of more comprehensive models and the development of programs which address multiple behaviors and that involve families and community.

Book Extended Effects of Participation in a Semester long Outdoor Leadership Training Program

Download or read book Extended Effects of Participation in a Semester long Outdoor Leadership Training Program written by Molly M. Staley and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many adventure programs offer opportunities to develop technical and outdoor skills such as orienteering, rope management, and backpacking skills (Shooter, Sibthorp, & Paisley, 2009) research has demonstrated that participating in an adventure program often results in the development of interpersonal skills such as communication, decision-making, and problem solving (McKenzie, 2003; Raiola, 2003; Sibthorp, Paisley, & Gookin, 2007). Interpersonal skills are beneficial to both personal and professional development and can translate into success in the classroom and the workplace (Gass, Garvey, & Sugerman, 2003; Shooter, Sibthorp, & Paisley, 2009). However, the long-term retention of technical and interpersonal skills as a result of participating in an adventure program has received limited research attention. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of participation in the CORE program at IU through a longitudinal analysis. Specifically, the aim of this study was to analyze the retention of technical and interpersonal skills, and attitudes of past CORE program participants and identify the impact these skills have on areas such as personal and professional development. The CORE Program is a unique outdoor adventure and education program that blends classroom learning and fieldwork to provide its participants with a broad range of experiential learning opportunities. The past research done on the CORE program has typically examined the effects of the program immediately after its conclusion. This study adopted a self-administered retrospective pre-post questionnaire that asked CORE alumni to reflect and rate their skill level on a 5-point Likert scale on three time points: before participation in CORE, right after completion of the CORE program and their current level of skills. Skills examined included technical skills such as knots, climbing, and orienteering and interpersonal skills such as problem solving, group management, and decision-making. The results of this study contributed to a better understanding the impacts and outcomes of the CORE program.

Book Applying Critical Action Research to Assess Outdoor Adventure Leadership Practice

Download or read book Applying Critical Action Research to Assess Outdoor Adventure Leadership Practice written by Christopher Pelchat and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no clear consensus on how to adequately design and evaluate outdoor adventure leadership preparation programs (Sugerman, 1999). The field of outdoor adventure leadership lacks research on developing curriculum and evaluation practices leaving a fragmented route to becoming a successful practitioner (Plaut, 2002). There appears a need to examine what are effective ways of assessing the development of student knowledge, disposition and performance that inform instructional practice and student learning. A historical look at what has been done in outdoor adventure leadership curricular development and evaluation is provided and an action research approach to qualitative studies is explored as a methodology to validate the educational experiences provided in experiential settings.
