Book Exploring the Impact of Guided Reading Strategies in Second Grade Classrooms

Download or read book Exploring the Impact of Guided Reading Strategies in Second Grade Classrooms written by Leigh Anne Black Smith and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing reading ability and related skills is often the primary focus of elementary administrators as academic achievement has been and still is the priority of all schools. Debates over various methods of reading instruction have always existed. Guided reading has been called the bridge between direct reading skills instruction and independent reading as teachers are allowed to tailor skill and strategy instruction to students' needs through small group instruction. This action research study explored evidence that demonstrated how the implementation of guided reading strategies in second grade classroom impacted student achievement in reading in a rural elementary school. Fluency, sign word recognition, instructional delivery, training methodology, and metacognitive processes involved in guided reading were also explored in this study.

Book Implementing Guided Reading in a Second Grade Classroom to Increase Reading Levels of English Language Learners

Download or read book Implementing Guided Reading in a Second Grade Classroom to Increase Reading Levels of English Language Learners written by Miranda Lynn Boys and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research question addressed in this project was, How does implementing guiding reading impact the reading progress of English Language Learners (ELLs)? The motivating factor for completing this capstone was that certain English learning students were continuously achieving below grade level on reading assessments. The purpose of this capstone is to share information gathered regarding the use of guided reading with struggling ELLs. It will outline the process of planning and completing action research which included fully implementing guided reading in a second grade classroom and collecting student data. The focus of this capstone explains the importance of differentiating reading instruction with-in a guided reading program to meet the needs of ELLs. Research done by Irene C. Fountas and Gay S. Pinnell strongly influenced the work of this capstone. The results show that implementing guided reading can positively impact the reading levels of ELLs if implemented over a period of time.

Book The Effects of Aligning Supplemental and Core Reading Instruction on Second Grade Students Reading Achievement

Download or read book The Effects of Aligning Supplemental and Core Reading Instruction on Second Grade Students Reading Achievement written by Carla V Wonder-McDowell and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aligning supplemental reading instruction with core classroom reading instruction on struggling second-grade students0́9 proficiency in phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Alignment was defined as core classroom and supplemental instruction that are congruent in philosophy, goals, instructional materials, instructional methods, student activities, and reading strategies that follow the same scope and sequence. This study employed a two-group, pre-post true experimental design. Second-grade students (N = 153) scoring in the lowest quartile on the fall Dynamic Indicators of Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) Oral Reading Fluency assessment were randomly assigned to either an aligned or nonaligned supplemental reading instructional condition received instruction over a 20-week period. Reading specialists in 11 schools provided the supplemental instruction. iv The DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) and the Woodcock Reading Mastery-Revised (WRMT-R III) assessments were used to assess student reading growth in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and vocabulary. Each student received one score from the DIBELS ORF and six scores from the WRMT-R III. Seven separate nested analyses of covariance (ANCOVA) were conducted to examine differences in group means at posttest while accounting for nesting of reading specialists within schools. Pretest measures for each of the dependent variables were used as covariates to adjust posttest scores at the end of the study. After controlling for pretest score differences and accounting for the variance associated with reading specialists nested within schools, statistically significant differences were found favoring the aligned supplemental condition for posttest scores on all measures. Effect sizes ranged from small to moderate, with largest effect sizes being found for vocabulary and comprehension. The results of the study suggest that at-risk second-grade students benefitted from supplemental instruction that is aligned to the classroom core reading program.

Book The Impact of Guided Reading Instruction on Elementary Studens Reading Fluency and Accuracy

Download or read book The Impact of Guided Reading Instruction on Elementary Studens Reading Fluency and Accuracy written by Agnes Jean Teets and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the impact of Guided Reading instruction on elementary students' ability to read with fluency and accuracy. A one-way analysis of covariance with pre and posttest design was performed and applied to determine the impact of Guided Reading instruction on elementary students’ reading fluency and accuracy. The sample of subjects included 108 elementary students in the fourth and fifth grade. To examine the impact of Guided Reading instruction, students’ Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA2) pre and posttest scores to include words per minute and accuracy percentage were compared. The analyses revealed proportionate differences in students’ fluency and accuracy. As direct implementation of Guided Reading was applied to student instruction, a significant difference was noted in the words per minute students read. However, as direct implementation of Guided Reading instruction was applied to student instruction, a significant difference was not noted in the accuracy rate of words per minute read. This research of Guided Reading instruction affords educators a multi-modality instructional strategy to impact the reading formation and foundation of elementary students. Recommendations to compliment this study to further benefit reading instruction could include the application of Guided Reading as it relates to and impacts student reading comprehension.
