Book The Effect of Group Counseling Intervention on the Performance of Rural Students on the Georgia High School Graduation Tests

Download or read book The Effect of Group Counseling Intervention on the Performance of Rural Students on the Georgia High School Graduation Tests written by Donna Caudell and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an increase in high-stakes testing, educators continue to search for the best methodologies for assisting students in maximizing academic achievement and successful completion of graduation requirements including mandatory tests for high school graduation. At the time of this study, students graduating from Georgia high schools were required to pass five academic subject area tests in order to receive a high school diploma. Psychometric theory, social cognitive theory, and cognitive behavioral theory provided the theoretical framework for this study. Students from a rural high school in Georgia comprised the sample. This quantitative study employed a posttest-only control group design with randomization. Students who had failed at least one of the Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT) were randomly placed into control and treatment groups. Students in the treatment group participated in an 8-session group guidance program, Student Success Skills. Control and treatment groups were compared using Mann-Whitney U tests for math, social studies and English language arts. The results of this study found no significant difference between the groups' test scores.

Book The Effect of the Student Success Skills Small Group Counseling Intervention on Factors Associated with Dropout Potential in High School

Download or read book The Effect of the Student Success Skills Small Group Counseling Intervention on Factors Associated with Dropout Potential in High School written by Jodie Weinstein and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this study is to add to the outcome research on effective school counseling interventions and to specifically evaluate the effectiveness of the Student Success Skills (SSS) small group intervention with students identified as having drop out potential in the 9th grade. This study analyzed two years of pre-existing, non-identifiable student data (N = 167) collected by school counselors at one high school in South Florida. An Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to determine differences in academic grades, standardized test scores, and absences between the students who did participate in the SSS small group intervention when compared to those students who did not participate. Statistically significant differences were found between groups in all three dropout potential factors (GPA, test scores, and absences) supporting the use of SSS small group school counseling intervention with students at risk for dropping out. Effect size estimates were reported for each of the measures.

Book The Effects of the Graduation Coach on the Attendance and Math and Reading Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test Scores of At Risk Students in a North Georgia Middle School

Download or read book The Effects of the Graduation Coach on the Attendance and Math and Reading Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test Scores of At Risk Students in a North Georgia Middle School written by Melissa Clark Trevillian and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until graduation coaches were added to all Georgia high schools for the 2006-2007 school year, the state of Georgia had one of the lowest graduation rates in the United States. After the high school graduation coaches were found to be successful in decreasing the dropout rate, coaches were added at the middle school level beginning in the 2008-2009 school year. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the middle school graduation coach on the attendance and the math and reading CRCT scores of the at-risk student. A control group of at-risk students that did not receive treatment was compared to the experimental group that received treatment from the middle school graduation coach during the 2008-2009 school year. The pretest and posttest math and reading CRCT scores and attendance were analyzed using an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to determine if the middle school graduation coach had a significant effect on the at-risk students. The hypotheses that the graduation coach would have an effect on the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade at-risk students' attendance and math and reading CRCT scores were rejected because the ANCOVA found that any significant increases or decreases were not due to the effect of the middle school graduation coach. Analysis of gender was completed using a paired t-test and found significant increases in the math and reading CRCT scores of males in the experimental group and the reading CRCT scores of females in the control group.

Book Getting Students to Graduation The Relationship Between Academic Interventions and Graduation Rates For Failing High School Students

Download or read book Getting Students to Graduation The Relationship Between Academic Interventions and Graduation Rates For Failing High School Students written by Emily Lucille Webb and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graduating high school has significant positive implications for individuals and society. Alternatively, not graduating high school has significant negative impacts. Although prior work has analyzed the relationship between academic interventions and student outcomes, very little research has been done to analyze the relationship between academic interventions at the secondary level for failing students and subsequent graduation rates. As such, this research analyzes the relationship between academic interventions (summer school, remedial courses, test preparation and individual tutoring) and high school graduation rates for students who fail their 10th grade math competency test using the publically available, nationally representative high school data from the Educational Longitudinal Study, 2002 (ELS 2002). As a broad group, these interventions have no significant relationship with graduation rates. When analyzed in groups based on individualization, the more individualized interventions (test preparation and tutoring) increase the likelihood of graduation rates for students who failed their competency test compared to students who received no interventions.
