Book The Effect of Graduate Education on Promotion of U S Army Field Grade Officer by Career Field

Download or read book The Effect of Graduate Education on Promotion of U S Army Field Grade Officer by Career Field written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to estimate the effect of graduate education on the promotion of a U.S. Army field grade officer. In addition, this thesis investigates whether or not there are significant differences among career fields of the Officers Personnel Management System. To do so, a probit model and three correction models are built. The first correction model uses the Heckit method to correct for sample selection bias. The second model uses the instrumental variable regression method to correct for endogeneity of graduate education. The third model uses the double selection approach that combines the Heckit correction with two stage least squares to correct for both sample selection bias and endogeneity. The probit estimations indicate that the effect of graduate education for a representative officer increase the promotion probabilities by 0.148 and 0.132 for the grades of Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel, respectively. After correcting for sample selection bias, the effect of graduate education on the promotion to Lieutenant Colonel is reduced by 59.5 percent. After correction for endogeneity, this effect is increased by 70.9 percent. Finally, this effect increases by 61.5 percent after correction for both sample selection bias and endogeneity.

Book The Effect of Advanced Education on the Retention and Promotion of Army Officers

Download or read book The Effect of Advanced Education on the Retention and Promotion of Army Officers written by Kemal Kahraman and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines the relationship between advanced education and the retention and promotion of Army officers. It uses data from the Active Duty Military Master File for Army officers who were commissioned between 1981 and 2001 and tracked until 2004, or until they separated from active duty. Results of survival analysis indicate that survival functions differ significantly with level of education, and that advanced education has a positive effect on both the retention and promotion of Army officers. Compared to an officer with a baccalaureate degree, the survival time of an officer with a master[alpha]s degree, a doctorate degree, or a professional degree is greater by 29.1 percent, 23.9 percent or 8.2 percent, respectively. An officer with a master[alpha]s degree, a doctorate degree, or a professional degree has a hazard of leaving the Army that is 38.3 percent, 44.4 percent, or 75.6 percent, respectively, of that of a college graduate. Compared to an officer with a baccalaureate degree, the length of time to promotion to O-4 for an officer with a master[alpha]s/doctorate degree or a professional degree is 0.2 percent shorter or 2.4 percent shorter, respectively. An officer with a master[alpha]s degree or doctorate degree has a hazard of promotion that is 115.3 percent of that of an officer with a college degree. Having a professional degree has no significant effect on the hazard of promotion.

Book The Effect of Graduate Education on the Performance of Air Force Officers

Download or read book The Effect of Graduate Education on the Performance of Air Force Officers written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the effects of graduate education on the retention and promotion of Line of the Air Force (LAF) officers at the rank of Captain and Major. Logistic regression models are estimated to examine the effects of graduate education on the retention of Captains and Majors and on promotion to Major using data from the Active Duty Military Master File for fiscal years 1992 through 2006. A difference-in-difference estimator is incorporated into the promotion model to evaluate the effects of an Air Force policy change intended to eliminate any bias towards advanced education at promotion boards. Besides graduate education, explanatory variables include basic demographic traits and professional characteristics. Results indicate that graduate education has a positive effect on retention of LAF officers at the rank of Captain and Major. Findings from the promotion model indicate that graduate education also has a positive effect on promotion but results for the change in policy (masking education information for promotion) are inconclusive. In addition, race and career field are shown to influence both retention behavior and promotion while gender significantly affects retention but not promotion.

Book Status Report on Research for the U S Military Academy cadet Leaders Task

Download or read book Status Report on Research for the U S Military Academy cadet Leaders Task written by Helen R. Haggerty and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the continuation of psychological research for the United States Military Academy, initiated during WW II, effort has been largely concerned with improving selection procedures and with evaluating achievement in various aspects of the primary officer training programs. The present report deals with research undertaken in a series of projects covering the period 1 January 1957 through 31 December 1962. The two major problems with which the current research has been concerned are prediction of success of WP graduates in officer assignments of various types and at various levels, and identification of those applicants who show leadership potential and who also are motivated to complete USMA training and subsequent Regular Army officer careers. A number of instruments were developed and administered with the objective of supplementing current selection measures to provide more adequate assessment of motivation and leadership potential. Earlier findings were reinforced in that the Aptitude for the Service Rating (ASR) continues to maintain its predictive superiority over other WP measures with reference to later performance on both field grade and company grade officers. Continuing validity studies and extended follow-up research hold promise for provision of guidance to the USMA in evaluating training given to cadets.

Book Towards a U S Army Officer Corps Strategy for Success

Download or read book Towards a U S Army Officer Corps Strategy for Success written by Casey Wardynski and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army has always touted itself as a capstone developmental experience and still does so today- You made them strong-we'll make them Army Strong. The Army is almost universally acknowledged as an organization that powerfully develops talent in areas such as leadership, teamwork behavior, work ethics, adaptability, fitness, and many others. Yet despite this well-earned reputation, the Army must remain vigilant. Authorized strength and inventory mismatches, an inverse relationship between responsibility and formal developmental time, and sparse non-operational development opportunities are serious challenges that the Army must address. Developing talent is important in all high performing organizations, but it is particularly critical to the Army for several reasons. First, the mission of fighting and winning wars requires truly championship-level talent-America's national security depends on it. Second, Americans entrust the very lives of their sons and daughters to the Army-they deserve to be led by superstars. And third, limited lateral entry into midcareer and senior level officer positions means the Army cannot rely upon poaching talent from outside organizations as corporate America does. Instead, the Army must retain and continuously develop its entrylevel talent to meet present and future demands. Army officers are hungry for the development needed to reach their full potential and perform optimally. When they do not get it, they seek it in the private sector. This is why officer developmental programs must be tailored to the needs of every talented individual. In this way, the Army can both deepen and broaden its overall talent distribution, mitigating risk in an increasingly uncertain and rapidly changing operating environment. Current practice, however, generally shunts officers down conventional career paths and through standardized "gates," regardless of their unique talents, experience, or needs. Meeting future challenges may well require a new way of doing business, a comprehensive developmental strategy rooted in sound theory. Several pioneers in the human capital field have provided a ready foundation for such a strategy. Their work demonstrates the criticality of continuing education, genuinely useful evaluations, and properly valued signals to the creation of an outstanding developmental climate. Considering officer development within this context moves the Army beyond a focus upon formal training and education. While these are certainly important, managing the nexus of individual talents and rapidly changing organizational requirements calls for careful attention to many other developmental factors. These include professional networks, mentorship and peer relationships, tenure, individual learning styles, as well as diversity of thought, experience, and culture. Lastly, to reap the full benefit of any developmental strategy, the Army must capture information on the multitude of talents that its officers possess. The uniqueness of each individual cannot be captured via skill identifiers and career field designations alone. Instead, the Army needs a mechanism to track talent development over time, gauging both its breadth and depth. Only then will it be able to effectively employ talent, the subject of the next and final monograph in this series.

Book The Goldwater Nichols Act and the Joint Duty Promotion Requirement

Download or read book The Goldwater Nichols Act and the Joint Duty Promotion Requirement written by Michael C. Veneri and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the Goldwater-Nichols Act of 1986, several changes were instituted by Congress in an effort to reform the U.S. military. Title IV, Joint Officer Management, of the Act was aimed at reforming the officer development of the services in an effort to eliminate the parochial service dispositions that had previously plagued U.S. military efforts. Title IV instituted policies to provide officers with joint education and joint experience in an effort to develop officers with a multi-service or joint perspective. In an effort to provide senior officers with joint experience, all officers promoted to the rank of brigadier general or rear admiral (07) must have completed a joint duty assignment prior to promotion. This dissertation looks specifically at the joint duty promotion requirement instituted under Title IV in an effort to analyze the U.S. military's ability to implement a congressional mandate. The implementation of the joint duty assignment as a promotion requirement has been a source of concern for both the services and congressional policymakers.

Book Multivariate Analysis of the Effect of Graduate Education on Promotion to Army Lieutenant Colonel

Download or read book Multivariate Analysis of the Effect of Graduate Education on Promotion to Army Lieutenant Colonel written by Hakan Kabalar and published by . This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this thesis is to estimate and explain the effects of graduate education and other factors on promotion to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (0-5) in the US Army. Our focus was primarily on determining whether graduate education provides officers with higher promotion probabilities. Besides graduate education, data that were analyzed include basic demographic traits, the officers' prior enlisted status, and their commissioning source information. The data used in this study were taken from the Active Duty Military Master File for fiscal years 1981 through 2001. This study develops multivariate logit regression and classification tree models to examine and explore the structure of the data sets. Both the regression models and the classification trees yielded positive results for the effect of graduate education on promotion. According to the regression model results, the odds ratio associated with graduate education is between 1.79 and 2.25. Military Academy and ROTC/Scholarship graduates have higher promotion probabilities than those from other sources, and married officers have higher rates than single officers. Additionally, age has a negative effect on promotion; that is, promotion probability decreases with age. Prior enlisted status, number of dependents, gender, race, and DOD primary occupation code do not seem to have statistically significant effects on promotion.
