Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, , language: English, abstract: The objective of this study is to examine the effect of farmer education on farm productivity of small-scale maize producing farmers. The educational system in Ethiopia is differentiating by low participation rates, particularly in rural areas. The agriculture productivity and income of rural famer is increased by farmer education (both formal and informal education). In order to achieve the objective of the study cross-sectional data has been collected from 200 maize producing farmers on the production level, farm size, farm input and equipment used, educational level, farm experience, gender, age, secondary occupation, etc. Semi-Structured questionnaire has been administered, and interview was conducted for selected farmers in order to collect the relevant data. Both descriptive statistics and econometrics model were used to analysis the data collected from household head. Cobb-Douglas production function model has been used to analysis the effect of farm education on farm productivity by including the education level as input of production.

Book Extension Learning and Adult Education in Jamaican Agriculture

Download or read book Extension Learning and Adult Education in Jamaican Agriculture written by Niran Foster and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural extension learning is understood by scholars as a key adult education learning method used to educate and improve small-scale farmers' practices. This project aims to understand the impact that extension learning programs have on Jamaican small-scale farmers. This study was conducted in the rural region of Yankee District of St. Ann, Jamaica. A total of eight farmers were interviewed about their experiences of extension learning in agriculture. The findings provide evidence that there are some factors that affect small-scale farmers' growth in Jamaica, for example, low literacy rates. While extension learning can be employed to address these issues, there are limited extension learning programs to improve the skills and learning of farmers in rural communities. This thesis reports three main findings. First, there is evidence that most small-scale farmers learn to farm informally and experientially, and yet, this informal learning is not considered within the realm of extension learning programs. Second, farmers living in Yankee District have established informal cooperative groups among themselves. However, the findings reveal contradictions between practices and information sharing among members, resulting in unfortunate gaps in collective learning. Third, extension learning programs do not do enough to support women small-scale farmers, resulting in women leaving the community to support their families.

Book The Influence of Conservation Agriculture Adoption on Input Demand and Maize Production in Butha Buthe Lesotho

Download or read book The Influence of Conservation Agriculture Adoption on Input Demand and Maize Production in Butha Buthe Lesotho written by Eric Bisangwa and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines the factors influencing adoption of conservation agriculture (CA) technologies and the effects adoption has on input demand, maize production, and farm profit in the province of Butha Buthe, Lesotho. In Lesotho, conventional agricultural practices such as plowing and brush burning for land preparation continue to cause soil erosion and reduce yields. Conservation agriculture technologies have been promoted by various organizations to improve soil structure, conserve water, reduce soil erosion, improve farmer household wellbeing, and increase food security. However, adoption of CA by smallholder farmers in Lesotho and other sub-Saharan countries has been relatively slow. Using data from a survey of 432 households, this thesis applies regression analysis to determine the factors influencing farmer adoption decisions of CA. Findings suggest that the use of CA practices is related to a number of household, farm and farmer characteristics, and the presence of extension efforts in the surveyed region. Agricultural training, farm size, education, access to fertilizer, distance to fields, household demographic structure, livestock ownership, and input prices played an important role in the decision to use CA. Results from the adoption model suggested that CA adoption was positively associated with farm profits and labor demand for crop production. Maize production and other input demands were not associated with CA adoption. Farmers were not responsive to prices as would be expected by profit maximizers. Farmers in Butha Buthe may not be maximizing profit with respect to input decisions for producing maize. Rather, their primary concerns may be growing maize for subsistence. The presence of non-government organizations, extension services and government efforts to promote CA in Butha Buthe may also explain the relative unresponsiveness of farmers to maize prices and input costs. Further research isolating these causes is warranted to understand what role input prices play in determining production and inputs demand decisions given the promotion of this technology by NGOs and other extension services, and the potential role CA may play in the wellbeing of smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa.

Book Analysis of the Impact of Out Grower Schemes on the Wellbeing of Small Scale Tobacco Farmers

Download or read book Analysis of the Impact of Out Grower Schemes on the Wellbeing of Small Scale Tobacco Farmers written by Sunday Silungwe and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-07 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 2.98, University of Lusaka, language: English, abstract: Out-grower schemes as an appropriate model for improving livelihoods of people in rural areas need to be recommended. This is because out-grower schemes provide access to agricultural inputs and market to the rural farmers. These services seem to be scarce, especially in a liberalized economy like Zambia. However, there are debates as whether out-grower schemes have been beneficial to farmers or not. Therefore, this study aims at investigating the impact of tobacco out-grower schemes on the economic well-being of farmers at Mugubudu tobacco out-grower scheme of Chipata District. To do this, the study employed non-experimental cross sectional research design. 150 questionnaires were distributed to solicit data from 150 randomly selected small scale tobacco farmers using a tobacco farmers' register as sample frame. The salient findings of the study were that tobacco out-grower schemes had improved the well-being of small scale tobacco farmers. Indicators for this improvement were that small scale tobacco farmers had acquired assets and their consumption expenditure had increased. However, the study established that lack of information as regard to contract contents, insufficiency of extension services, pricing system, environmental hazards and debt from inputs loans as factors that can choke the strides made by out-grower schemes. The study recommended that information is be provided in local languages as this will reduce the current difficulties as many of agro-literature is published in English. It is necessary that there is improved collaboration, dialogue and negotiation among all stakeholders namely the Ministry of Agriculture through the regulatory body Tobacco Board of Zambia (TBZ), out-grower firms and farmers association on issues such as pricing, dissemination of information and loan management. The quantity of extension se

Book Farmer Education and Farm Efficiency

Download or read book Farmer Education and Farm Efficiency written by Dean T. Jamison and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relationship between the education farmers have received and their subsequent efficiency as farm operators. The concern is with the self-employed in agriculture, the small farmer. The study is concerned solely with ascertaining empirically the effect of schooling on agricultural efficiency and, when possible, the effect of access to information as measured by exposure to extension services. The study uses data from Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand; related findings from several other countries of Africa, Asia, and Latin America are reviewed. Surveys of individual farms provide the data used in the empirical analyses. Analyses from Thailand indicate that farmers of all educational levels are maximizing profits. However, more educated farmers do have higher levels of profits, which reflect the higher levels of productivity found in the production function analyses. Education has little effect on market efficiency. Higher levels of education and exposure to extension services increase the probabilities of using chemical fertilizers. The effects of education were much more likely to be positive in modernizing agricultural environments rather than in traditional ones.

Book Commercialization of Smallholders

Download or read book Commercialization of Smallholders written by Berhanu Gebremedhin and published by ILRI (aka ILCA and ILRAD). This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on commercial transformation of smallholders makes little distinction between market orientation (production decision based on market signals) and market participation (sale of output). This paper analyzes the determinants of market orientation and market participation in Ethiopia separately and examines if market orientation translates into market participation. Empirical results show that market orientation translates strongly into market participation. The key implication of this study is that policy, technological, organizational and institutional interventions aimed at promoting commercial transformation of subsistence agriculture should follow two-pronged approach: improving market orientation of smallholders at production level, and facilitating market entry and participation of households in output and input markets. Focusing on either may not be as effective in achieving the transformation.

Book Farmers Adaptation Strategies to Drought

Download or read book Farmers Adaptation Strategies to Drought written by Farhad Hamidi and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2017 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: Very Good (3.5), , course: Regional and Rural Development Planning, language: English, abstract: This thesis studies the field of drought hazard and its findings are consistent with existing literature on drought in Thailand and other regions. In the country and study area, the findings and results of this study may provide effective and useful adaptation strategies to drought and also help understand drought's impacts on agricultural production and farmers' livelihoods, because of the little existing research on drought in the study area. In addition, maybe this thesis can assist the regional and rural planners and extension officials and other agro and rural related sectors and departments to formulate development plans, policies and extend useful and effective services in order to facilitate farmers to be able to sustain their livelihood against the drought by adapting the most effective adaptation strategies. Drought is one of the major threats among all natural hazards to people’s livelihoods and socio-economic development. Drought is a normal characteristic of climate and is considered to be the most complex but least realized of all natural hazards which affects more people than any other hazards particularly the farmers and their livelihoods. The firs and the most consequence of drought lies on Agriculture and threatened both agriculture sector and those who are dependent on it in that drought affected area. Nong Ya Sai district of Thailand is a drought prone area which the farmers have been suffering from drought during the recent years. Since, it is a long time that the farmers have experienced the drought and its consequences on their farming and their livelihoods, they could have a good perception of drought and its impacts on their agro-based livelihood. Thus, they have applied some adaptation strategies to reduce the drought impacts on their farming and livelihood in that area. Therefore, this study has attempted to focus on farmers’ adaptation strategies to drought in order to find out what strategies or techniques are adapted by farmers to reduce the drought impacts on their both farming and livelihoods. Furthermore, this study has assessed the farmers’ perception and understanding of drought and what are the drought impacts on agriculture and farmers livelihoods. To achieve these objectives, the Nong Ya Sai district of Thailand has defined as the target area of this study where it is a drought affected area and the farmers have experienced and adapted some strategies to reduce the drought impacts.

Book Food and Agriculture in Ethiopia

Download or read book Food and Agriculture in Ethiopia written by Paul Dorosh and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perception of Ethiopia projected in the media is often one of chronic poverty and hunger, but this bleak assessment does not accurately reflect most of the country today. Ethiopia encompasses a wide variety of agroecologies and peoples. Its agriculture sector, economy, and food security status are equally complex. In fact, since 2001 the per capita income in certain rural areas has risen by more than 50 percent, and crop yields and availability have also increased. Higher investments in roads and mobile phone technology have led to improved infrastructure and thereby greater access to markets, commodities, services, and information. In Food and Agriculture in Ethiopia: Progress and Policy Challenges, Paul Dorosh and Shahidur Rashid, along with other experts, tell the story of Ethiopia's political, economic, and agricultural transformation. The book is designed to provide empirical evidence to shed light on the complexities of agricultural and food policy in today's Ethiopia, highlight major policies and interventions of the past decade, and provide insights into building resilience to natural disasters and food crises. It examines the key issues, constraints, and opportunities that are likely to shape a food-secure future in Ethiopia, focusing on land quality, crop production, adoption of high-quality seed and fertilizer, and household income. Students, researchers, policy analysts, and decisionmakers will find this book a useful overview of Ethiopia's political, economic, and agricultural transformation as well as a resource for major food policy issues in Ethiopia.
