Book excerpt: In the United States, African American men have been stereotypically impacted by excessive rates of discrimination, poor mental health outcomes, and underachievement (Franklin & Boyd-Franklin, 2000). Historically, African Americans as a race, have endured one of the nation’s most profound tragedies (Boyd & Franklin, 2000). The recorded emergence of Chattel Slavery beginning in the mid-1770s has had an everlasting impact on the social structure of American society (Elligan & Utsey, 1999). African American men particularly, have been classified as a dysfunctional group of individuals by mainstream society. Unfavorable stereotypes have followed African American men as they have remained targets of racial profiling (Welch, 2007) and continuously obtain limited access to academic achievement (Stoops, 2004). It is of relevance that America gain greater insight into the psychological barriers faced by African American men pursuing academic success. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact exposure to police violence observed through social media, may have on the academic self-efficacy of African American male college students. It is hypothesized, that African American male college students exposed to posts of police violence may experience an increase in negative beliefs regarding their racial identity. Subsequent increases of exposure and negative self-perception may lend to decreases in confidence regarding a student’s ability to perform well in academic domains.

Book excerpt: Since the late 1960s, the enrollment of African American students in higher education has steadily increased. Furthermore, the community college system and specifically the California community college system has seen the highest rise in the enrollment of African American students. Despite the rise in their numbers, African American male students who have relied on the California community college system as a conduit to a better life continue to have the lowest academic achievement outcomes and are the most likely to leave college. Although research shows that the persistence and academic achievement of college students is linked to the interactions they have with faculty and their peers, little is known about whether these relationships are also connected to the academic achievement of African American males attending California community colleges, nor is it understood how psychosocial factors influence the achievement. This dissertation built on a study conducted by Reid (2007) in which Tinto's institutional integration theory (e.g., Tinto, 1993) was extended by assertion that African American males who are academically successful (and not just persistent) are also well integrated in the academic and social milieu of their college campuses. Reid's study also hypothesized that their level of institutional integration which influenced their academic achievement was linked to their racial identity attitudes and self-efficacy beliefs. The study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach in which twelve African American male students, who were recruited from one Southern California community college, were interviewed to learn about their educational experiences and perceptions. The goal of the study was to provide a voice to this student subgroup which continues to under-perform academically. The findings of the study highlight the importance of race, faculty connections and intrinsic motivation factors in reaching academic goals. The study provides recommendations, based on the findings, for educators, administrators and other community college stakeholders to better assist African American males attending community colleges in California to attain their educational goals.

Book excerpt: Despite an increase in the accessibility to higher education by non-traditional populations, there remain a significant number of students that come from families where they are the first to attend and hopefully graduate from college. In addition to the challenges faced by first time college students, first-generation college students (FGS) are faced with their own unique and complex issues. Notably, the relationship between self-perception of academic abilities and academic performance can have an impact on the retention and persistence of this student population. The author frames the issues faced by FGS and deconstruct the role of self-perception, self-esteem and self-efficacy in academic achievement amongst the target population ultimately intended to lead to successful postsecondary outcomes. Seven categories emerged from data content analysis of the data: (a) being an African American male, (b) being a Man of Morehouse, (c) being a FGS, (d) community support, (e) peer support, (f) institutional support and (g) motivation. Based on findings, a student centric success model was designed to support the academic success of the target population.

Book excerpt: (Purpose) The purpose of this study was to examine the consequences of violence exposure (personal and community) on African American students at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) as well as those attending predominantly white institutions (PWIs). Further, this study sought to determine if violence exposure makes a difference in academic achievement above and beyond traditional variables that have been studied in the past. (Methodology) Two groups of African American college students were studied to address the question of whether there is a difference between the deleterious effects of violence on African American students attending HBCUs and those attending PWIs. Four theories were hypothesized; the theories alluded to a statistically significant relationship between early exposure to violence and the later academic achievement of African American students at HBCUs and the PWIs. The study also sought to determine if the two groups of students were impacted differently. (Results) Data indicate very strong/strong correlations between and among numerous variables. (Conclusions) Statistical analyses indicate that early exposure to violence, especially personal violence, plays a role in determining the student's locus of control. The student's locus of control then determines the fervor with which the student will engage in academic pursuits. (Recommendations) Professional development incorporating research based techniques that requires participants to think in innovative and creative ways is essential for administrators, faculty, and staff; effective strategies are included. (Additional Data) Contains six (6) tables. A bibliography is included.

Book excerpt: For the past decade the attainment gap in college admission and graduation rates between Black males and their White counterparts has continued to grow. A growing body of research has held that there is a negative correlation between educational attainment and the decline of the Black family structure. As the structure of the Black family has deteriorated due to the lack of a male presence, so have participation rates in higher education for African American males. It is established that environmental and cultural factors have a profound influence on human behaviors, including academic performance. What is less understood is how environmental and cultural factors influence the way in which Black males come to perceive education and how those perceptions influence not only their behavior but their performance in school. It is unknown why being African American and male causes this segment of the population to stand out in the most negative and disheartening ways, both in school and in society. This study measures the perceived influence of four factors (societal dissonance, self-efficacy, African American male mentorship, and institutional support) on the academic success of African American male students at a predominantly White institution of higher education.

Research had indicated that social support networks, including faculty and staff members, strong peer relationships, and supportive mentors and counselors, are essential elements that contribute to the success of this population of students. As such, this project proposes a cognitive behavioral counseling group for African American male community college students that will help promote a sense of campus belonging, encourage the application of social support systems throughout the duration of their academic careers, and increase their academic identity and self-efficacy.
