Book The Effect of Exogenous Calcium and 1 THYROXINE on Parturition in the Radioiodine Thyroidectomized Rat thesis

Download or read book The Effect of Exogenous Calcium and 1 THYROXINE on Parturition in the Radioiodine Thyroidectomized Rat thesis written by and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of hypothyroidism and hypopathyroidism and replacement therapy on reproduction have been studied in the rat. Hypothyroidism was produced by surBery or bp irradiation with I/sup 131/ or At/sup 211/. Replacement therapy was attempted with calcium gluconate, desiccated thyroid substance, thyroxine, triiodothyronine, and a mixture of 90% thyroxine and 10% triiodothyronine. Radioisotopes were administered in sufficient quantity to produce highly sig nificant depressions is metabolic rate and thyroidal uptakes of a tracer dose of I/sup 131/. Enough time was allowed to elapse to permit complete metabolism of residual thyroid hormone before any attempt was made to breed the animals. The number of pregnancies was drastically reduced in the hypothyroid animals. Thyroid supplement brought the number of conceptions to well within the normal limits. No difference in fertility was observed when TH, T/sub 4/ or T/sub 3/ were used as the thyroid replacement. Still births and prolonged gestation were common in surgically thyroparathyroidectoraized animals and in animals whose thyroids had been destroyed with I/sup 131/. The number of fetal deaths was reduced, and the length of gestation waB reduced to the normal 23 days by intragastric administration of veterinary calcium gluconate daily for at least 5 days before term in the I/sup 131/-irradiated, thyroxine-treated animals. Calcium gluconate (C.P.) was apparently ineffective when given by mouth. Serum calcium levels were depressed to less than 6 mg% during parturition in I/ sup 131/-thyroidectomized, thyroxine-supported animals (46% of the cases tested). It is concluded that the thyroid gland is essential for the maintenance of the reproductive system in order to permit normal conception and pregnancy. However, its exact role, if any, in parturition could not be determined. It must be assumed that destruction of, or damage to the parathyroid glands was a major contributor to the difficulties observed in parturition. (auth).

Book Calcium Metabolism Bone and Metabolic Bone Diseases

Download or read book Calcium Metabolism Bone and Metabolic Bone Diseases written by F. Kuhlencordt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The X. European Symposium on Calcified Tissues took place in Hamburg from 16th to 21 st September 1973. The financial backing came from the Gesund heitsbehorde der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg (President Dr. Zylmann), the Bundesministerium fur Jugend, Familie und Gesundheit, and from industry. This made it possible to carry out the scientific program, to invite several European and non-European scientists, and to organize a social program designed to establish personal contact between delegates and to make visitors acquainted with our country. In the name of the organizing committee, we herewith express our warmest appreciation of all the help given to us. Professor Bartelheimer, as the representative of the Medical Faculty and on behalf of the President of the University of Hamburg, welcomed the Parti cipants in the symposium to our city. The history of these meetings began in Oxford in 1963, with the First European Bone and Tooth Symposium, organized by H. J. J. Blackwood, B. E. C. Nordin, and Dame Janet Vaughan. The idea was to found in Europe an institution simi lar to the American Gordon Research Conferences of Bone and Tooth. After the U. K. , the host countries were Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, Italy, Israel and Austria. The second symposium in Liege already bore the present name.

Download or read book The Fish Oocyte written by Patrick J. Babin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-20 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the growing needs in deciphering the biological processes associated with fish reproduction, in view of the growth of aquaculture and the dwindling natural stocks of commercially important fish. It presents a comprehensive overview on egg production in fish, from the standpoint of the oocyte. With this view in mind, the book includes chapters on oocyte development (oogenesis), hormonal regulation and hormone receptors, formation of the egg envelopes, growth, accumulation of nutrients and maternal transcripts, maturation, hydration, ovulation and fertilization. A special emphasis is placed on using state-of-the-art tools including electron microscopy for discerning the ultra-structure of the follicle and genomic/proteomic tools to fully understand biological basis of fish reproduction. Studies on promoting oocyte maturation, ovulation and spawning in farmed fish and preservation of fish oocytes at low temperatures are also included. The book will appeal to University lecturers, students, research scientists and those associated with culture of fish in freshwater or marine aquaculture.

Book Endocrine and Biochemical Development of the Fetus and Neonate

Download or read book Endocrine and Biochemical Development of the Fetus and Neonate written by Jose M. Cuezva and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The annual meeting of the Perinatal Biochemical Group of the Spanish Biochemical Society held in Madrid on December 15-16, 1989, provided an excellent opportunity to bring together a group of distinguished investigators both from Spain and from abroad with a common interest in developmental endocrinology and biochemistry. The aim of the symposium was to present and discuss the most recent developments in the areas of endocrine and biochemical processes critical to normal growth and maturation of the newborn. To achieve a high degree of interaction among the participants, subject reviews as well as short communications were include in the program. The reviews provided in-depth information on selected important topics. The purpose of short communications was two fold: (i) to provide a forum to discuss on-going investigations on related areas; and (ii) to present opportunities for active participation by young investigators. This format proved very successful in generating fruitful discussions among the participants. Taken together the review chapters and the short communications have resulted in a coherent and unified subject presentation. Advances in biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology have provided not only new and exciting experimental approaches but also have opened up new directions in the investigation of differentiation and developmental processes at cellular, molecular and biochemical levels during the early stages of growth and maturation. In recent years a wealth of information in these areas of development has emerged at a rapid rate.
