Book Physical Processes in Interstellar Clouds

Download or read book Physical Processes in Interstellar Clouds written by G.E. Morfill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of a meeting held in August, 1986 in Irsee, West Germany. As the title suggests, the aim of the meeting was to discuss physical processes in interstellar clouds, determine the current status, aims and future direction of the research in this area. Interstellar clouds contain nearly all the mass of diffuse gas in our galaxy, some 10% of the total galactic mass. They represent the birth site for stars and the final "dumping ground" for matter ejected from stars (winds, ex plosive ejecta) and thus play an integral part in the galactic recycling of material. Not only are the clouds important for the structure and evolution of our galaxy, they are also interesting objects of study "per se". Because of their vast scales (up to about 100 parsec), extreme temperatures (as low as about lOOK), and long life 8 times (estimated a about 10 years) a number of physical and chemical processes occur in these environments, which we are not able to study elesewhere, certainly not in laboratories. It is for this reason that the meeting, and hence this book, was organized in such a way that firstly the latest observational results were sum m~ized, going from the global, large scales, to finer details and dynamics, then progressing onwards to the processes -dynamical, chemical, electromagnetic, etc.

Download or read book Galactic Bulges written by Eija Laurikainen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of invited reviews on Galactic Bulges written by experts in the field. A central point of the book is that, while in the standard picture of galaxy formation a significant amount of the baryonic mass is expected to reside in classical bulges, the question what is the fraction of galaxies with no classical bulges in the local Universe has remained open. The most spectacular example of a galaxy with no significant classical bulge is the Milky Way. The reviews of this book attempt to clarify the role of the various types of bulges during the mass build-up of galaxies, based on morphology, kinematics and stellar populations and connecting their properties at low and high redshifts. The observed properties are compared with the predictions of the theoretical models, accounting for the many physical processes leading to the central mass concentration and their destruction in galaxies. This book serves as an entry point for PhD students and non-specialists and as a reference work for researchers in the field.

Book Star Formation Galaxies and the Interstellar Medium

Download or read book Star Formation Galaxies and the Interstellar Medium written by Jose Franco and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-06-10 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enormously powerful phenomena of starbursts are examined in this book. These spectacular star-forming events are seen on large scales in some galaxies, often triggered by galactic interactions. An intriguing implication of starburst research is that active galactic nuclei (AGN) may not be powered by accreting black holes. Instead theories are presented where compact powerhouses of dust-enshrouded star formation lie at the core of AGN, with supernovae exploding roughly once per year within massive nuclear concentrations of gas. This book collects articles from a timely international conference in Elba, Italy, in 1992; these comprise a thorough review of the most important developments in galactic-scale star formation since the starburst revolution of the late 1980s. This text will introduce graduate students to this exciting area and keep experts apace with rapid developments in it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the sixth Eurographics Workshop on Vir tual Environments. The event took place from June 1 to June 2, 2000, in Am sterdam. We hope that readers will find these proceedings to be valuable, not only for virtual environment researchers, but also for practitioners developing or using virtual environment applications. We are glad to report that visibility of the workshop continues to expand and that virtual environment researchers and practitioners from allover the world are submitting papers. This year, 40 papers and case studies were submitted of which 20 were accepted. In addition, we are glad to see that the focus of the workshop is also expanding. We accepted 6 research papers on evaluation of virtual environments and there was a broad sampling of other topics. We would like to thank all those involved in organizing the symposium. In particular, thanks go to Mieke Brune who was in charge of the local organization. In addition, we want to thank the international program committee for their excellent, yet laborious, job in reviewing all submitted papers. The quality of the workshop is a reflection of the quality of the submitted papers and the quality of the reviewing process.

Book The Star Formation History of Virgo Spiral Galaxies

Download or read book The Star Formation History of Virgo Spiral Galaxies written by Cirino Pappalardo and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the influence of ram pressure stripping on the star formation history of cluster spiral galaxies. Ram pressure stripping is the hydrodynamical interaction between the interstellar medium (ISM) of a spiral galaxy that is moving inside the potential well of a cluster, and the intracluster medium (ICM). If the dynamical pressure exerted by the ICM is larger than the restoring force due to the galactic potential, the galaxy loses gas from the outer disk. The Virgo cluster is an ideal laboratory to study environmental effects on galaxy evolution, because it is rich in spirals and dynamically young. From observations we know that the amount of atomic gas in Virgo spirals is less than that of galaxies in the field. In particular cluster spirals show truncated HI disks (Giovanelli & Haynes 1983, Cayatte et al. 1990). For those galaxies that also show a symmetrical stellar distribution, ram pressure stripping is the most probably origin of the gas-disk truncation.

Book Mapping Extragalactic Dense Molecular Gas

Download or read book Mapping Extragalactic Dense Molecular Gas written by Molly J. Gallagher and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas density plays an important role in galactic evolution via its connection to star formation. Yet because dense gas is difficult to observe, we are only beginning to explore how interstellar gas density and its relationship to the star formation rate (SFR) depend on galactic environment. My thesis presents three comparisons between gas density, SFR, and galactic environment in nearby spiral galaxies.

Book Stellar Formation

    Book Details:

  • ISBN : 1483139557
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Stellar Formation written by V C Reddish and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stellar Formation focuses on the properties, distributions, characteristics, and formation of stars and galaxies. The manuscript first offers information on locations of star formation, as well as the distribution of interstellar gas, clouds, and globules; spatial relationships between young stars and interstellar matter; and distribution of young stars. The book also tackles frequency distribution of stellar masses and aggregates of stars. The text ponders on the frequency distribution of cloud masses, rate and environment of star formation, and cloud structure in the interstellar gas. The publication also examines the fragmentation of clouds into protostars and the frequency distribution of protostar masses, rate of formation of stars, and evolution of galaxies. Discussions focus on random fragmentation, gravitational turbulence, and fragmentation induced by molecule formation. The manuscript is a vital reference for scientists and readers interested in stellar formation.

Book Feedback and Environmental Effect on Star Formation in Galaxies

Download or read book Feedback and Environmental Effect on Star Formation in Galaxies written by Taro Sato and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2007 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies of galaxy evolution and formation have shown that both environment and gaseous "feedback" process are critical factors that give rise to the observed variety and richness in galaxy populations. This thesis presents research in these two seemingly disparate aspects of galaxy formation. One deals with a detailed study of the star-forming galaxy population in z = 0.4 galaxy cluster Abell 851, which describes how they may be the key population at an intermediate phase of environmentally-driven evolution, causing the Butcher-Oemler effect. The other is a study of host galaxies of gaseous outflows which are drawn from a large-scale galaxy survey. The census shows that starburst-driven outflows are ubiquitous in the galaxies in transition, suggesting the importance of feedback-driven evolution. We speculate on how these factors might play synergetic or even integral roles in transforming the star-forming property of galaxy, and propose a few directions of research that may help elucidate the significance of feedback and environment in galaxy formation and evolution.

Book Outskirts of Galaxy Clusters IAU C195

Download or read book Outskirts of Galaxy Clusters IAU C195 written by International Astronomical Union. Colloquium and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-12-16 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the International Astronomical Union Colloquium no. 195, held in Torino, Italy in 2004. The meeting investigated the formation of galaxies within a full cosmological context, focusing on the outer regions of galaxy clusters. The observed correlation of optical and radio properties of galaxies with their environment indicates that the formation and evolution of galaxies is intimately linked to the formation of large scale structure. With chapters written by leading authorities in the field, this timely volume investigates the role of the environment in determining the properties of galaxies. It describes the distribution of matter and galaxies on the largest scales in the Universe, the processes of cluster and galaxy formation, their role and interplay. This is a valuable collection of review articles for professional astronomers.
