Book Final Report Phase IV

Download or read book Final Report Phase IV written by G. J. Herbison and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unloading the musculature in weightlessness is generally accepted as the cause of the muscle atrophy. However, the exact biologic mechanisms involved in atrophy and hypertrophy of skeletal muscle are unknown even though a great deal of excellent research has been done on the biology of muscle in the appropriate disciplines. Since development of the optimum means of preventing or controlling space-related muscle atrophy will depend on knowledge of the mechanism involved, NASA supports both intra- and extramural research in muscle biology. In the opinion of the LSRO ad hoc Working Group on Muscle Atrophy, NASA should continue its program, but with some changes in emphasis to assure better consistency between ongoing and planned research and the carefully composed, highly appropriate Research and Technology Objectives and Plans on Muscle Atrophy (NASA RTOP 199-20-42).

Book The Role of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation in Improving Peripheral Muscle Strength in Chronically Ill Bedbound Patients

Download or read book The Role of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation in Improving Peripheral Muscle Strength in Chronically Ill Bedbound Patients written by Jonathon Carkner and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronically ill patients undergoing prolonged bedrest in the intensive care unit and long-term care facilities typically experience a marked loss of muscle mass, particularly in the lower limbs, translating into clinically significant muscular weakness. Both muscle atrophy and weakness can be present following only one week of stay in the ICU. Following discharge from the hospital, functional limitations may persist for years and impede their return to activities of daily living, thus highlighting the importance of developing an effective intervention against disuse-related muscle atrophy and weakness. This thesis aimed to evaluate the feasibility of application of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) in chronically ill bedridden (CIB) patients and the efficacy of NMES in both improving muscle strength and attenuating lower limb muscle atrophy during their hospitalization. Four CIB patients (76 ± 7 years) underwent 15 NMES sessions of the quadriceps ...

Book Integrated Electrophysical Agents Formerly Entitled Electrotherapy Evidence Based Practice

Download or read book Integrated Electrophysical Agents Formerly Entitled Electrotherapy Evidence Based Practice written by Tim Watson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2020-03-28 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrophysical Modalities (formerly Electrotherapy: Evidence-Based Practice) is back in its 13th edition, continuing to uphold the standard of clinical research and evidence base for which it has become renowned. This popular textbook comprehensively covers the use of electrotherapy in clinical practice and includes the theory which underpins that practice. Over recent years the range of therapeutic agents involved and the scope for their use have greatly increased and the new edition includes and evaluates the latest evidence and most recent developments in this fast-growing field. Tim Watson is joined by co-editor Ethne Nussbaum and both bring years of clinical, research and teaching experience to the new edition, with a host of new contributors, all leaders in their specialty.

Book Functional Electrical Stimulation

Download or read book Functional Electrical Stimulation written by Alojz Kralj and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference text covers the fundamental knowledge and principles of functional electrical stimulation (FES) as applied to the spinal cord injured (SCI) patient. The principles of FES application and basic biomechanical issues related to FES in SCI are stressed. The fundamentals regarding patient selection criteria, indication, contraindications, and descriptions of procedures are clearly presented. Also included are the fundamentals and rationale of gait restoration with patient selection, control strategies, and the synthesis of gait sequences with trends in the field. Each chapter contains numerous references to the FES literature for the reader to easily evaluate and extend his knowledge in the area of interest. Biomedical and rehabilitation engineering professionals and researchers for medical doctors, physical therapists, and orthotists will find this publication invaluable.
