Book The effect of Earnings Quality and Internal Resource on the relationship between Tax Avoidance and Firm level Investment

Download or read book The effect of Earnings Quality and Internal Resource on the relationship between Tax Avoidance and Firm level Investment written by Cesilia Mgimwa and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-03-18 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, , language: English, abstract: The perception that corporate tax avoidance represents a shift of value from the government tax authority to shareholders has been questioned by recent studies that finds this perception to not be legitimate in the data. In this study, I point out the evidence of the positive relationship between tax avoidance and firm level investment so that to provide an evidence of the managers’ behavior of using savings from tax avoidance to fund firms’ investment activities. Furthermore, this study, examine the effect of earnings quality and internal resource on the relationship between tax avoidance and firm level investment. I collected data of 3085 firms from the KisValue database with accounting data for companies listed on the Korea Stock Exchange (KOSPI) from 2012 to 2017, to test the effect of earnings quality and internal resource on the relationship between tax avoidance and firm level investment. I start with year 2012 because in 2012, International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) adoption becomes compulsory to all listed companies in Korea. In contrast from previous research, this study looks at the relationship of tax avoidance and firm level investment from a different perspective by focusing on the effect of earnings quality and internal resource on this relationship. The evidence of this study suggests that tax avoidance is positively associated with firm level investment. In other words, when firms increase tax avoidance, the firm level investment also increases. Adding to Dobbins and Jacob (2016) and Axel and Joachim (2017) research that found lowered tax rates, induce higher investments. This study also finds the evidence that the relationship between tax avoidance and firm level investment depends on the availability of internal resource and the level of earnings quality. The relationship between tax avoidance and firm level investment is negative when the firm has greater internal resource and better earnings quality. These results suggesting that; firms with the presence of greater internal resource (i.e. internally generated cash flow) tend to rely less on tax avoidance to fund their investment than those firms with low internal resource. Similarly, firms with better earnings quality tend to rely less on tax avoidance to finance their investment than firms with poor earnings quality.

Book Earnings Quality

Download or read book Earnings Quality written by Jennifer Francis and published by Now Publishers Inc. This book was released on 2008 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review lays out a research perspective on earnings quality. We provide an overview of alternative definitions and measures of earnings quality and a discussion of research design choices encountered in earnings quality research. Throughout, we focus on a capital markets setting, as opposed, for example, to a contracting or stewardship setting. Our reason for this choice stems from the view that the capital market uses of accounting information are fundamental, in the sense of providing a basis for other uses, such as stewardship. Because resource allocations are ex ante decisions while contracting/stewardship assessments are ex post evaluations of outcomes, evidence on whether, how and to what degree earnings quality influences capital market resource allocation decisions is fundamental to understanding why and how accounting matters to investors and others, including those charged with stewardship responsibilities. Demonstrating a link between earnings quality and, for example, the costs of equity and debt capital implies a basic economic role in capital allocation decisions for accounting information; this role has only recently been documented in the accounting literature. We focus on how the precision of financial information in capturing one or more underlying valuation-relevant constructs affects the assessment and use of that information by capital market participants. We emphasize that the choice of constructs to be measured is typically contextual. Our main focus is on the precision of earnings, which we view as a summary indicator of the overall quality of financial reporting. Our intent in discussing research that evaluates the capital market effects of earnings quality is both to stimulate further research in this area and to encourage research on related topics, including, for example, the role of earnings quality in contracting and stewardship.

Book International Corporate Tax Avoidance A Review of the Channels Magnitudes and Blind Spots

Download or read book International Corporate Tax Avoidance A Review of the Channels Magnitudes and Blind Spots written by Sebastian Beer and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-07-23 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the rapidly growing empirical literature on international tax avoidance by multinational corporations. It surveys evidence on main channels of corporate tax avoidance including transfer mispricing, international debt shifting, treaty shopping, tax deferral and corporate inversions. Moreover, it performs a meta analysis of the extensive literature that estimates the overall size of profit shifting. We find that the literature suggests that, on average, a 1 percentage-point lower corporate tax rate will expand before-tax income by 1 percent—an effect that is larger than reported as the consensus estimate in previous surveys and tends to be increasing over time. The literature on tax avoidance still has several unresolved puzzles and blind spots that require further research.

Book A Firm Lower Bound Characteristics and Impact of Corporate Minimum Taxation

Download or read book A Firm Lower Bound Characteristics and Impact of Corporate Minimum Taxation written by Aqib Aslam and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the role of minimum taxes and attempts to quantify their impact on economic activity. Minimum taxes can be effective at shoring up the corporate tax base and enhancing the perceived equity of the tax system, potentially motivating broader taxpayer compliance. Where political and administrative constraints prevent reforms to the standard corporate income tax, a minimum tax can help mitigate base erosion from excessive tax incentives and avoidance. Using a new panel dataset that catalogues changes in minimum tax regimes over time around the world, firm-level analysis suggests that the introduction or reform of a minimum tax is associated with an increase in the average effective tax rate of just over 1.5 percentage points with respect to turnover and of around 10 percent with respect to operating income. Minimum taxes based on modified corporate income lead to the largest increases in effective tax rates, followed by those based on assets and turnover.

Book Taxing Corporate Income in the 21st Century

Download or read book Taxing Corporate Income in the 21st Century written by Alan J. Auerbach and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-16 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first published in 2007. Most countries levy taxes on corporations, but the impact - and therefore the wisdom - of such taxes is highly controversial among economists. Does the burden of these taxes fall on wealthy shareowners, or is it passed along to those who work for, or buy the products of, corporations? Can a country with high corporate taxes remain competitive in the global economy? This book features research by leading economists and accountants that sheds light on these and related questions, including how taxes affect corporate dividend policy, stock market value, avoidance, and evasion. The studies promise to inform both future tax policy and regulatory policy, especially in light of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and other actions by the Securities and Exchange Commission that are having profound effects on the market for tax planning and auditing in the wake of the well-publicized accounting scandals in Enron and WorldCom.

Book Business and the Ethical Implications of Technology

Download or read book Business and the Ethical Implications of Technology written by Kirsten Martin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-12-11 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on how firms should engage ethical choices in developing and deploying digital technologies. Digital technologies are devices that rely on rapidly accelerating digital sensing, storage, and transmission capabilities to intervene in human processes. While the ethics of technology is analyzed across disciplines from science and technology studies (STS), engineering, computer science, critical management studies, and law, less attention is paid to the role that firms and managers play in the design, development, and dissemination of technology across communities and within their firm. This book covers the topic from three angles. First, it illuminates diverse facets of the intersection of technology and business ethics. Second, it uses themes to explore what business ethics offers to the study of technology and, third, what technology studies offers to the field of business ethics. Each field brings expertise that, together, improves our understanding of the ethical implications of technology. Chapter “A Micro-ethnographic Study of Big Data-Based Innovation in the Financial Services Sector: Governance, Ethics and Organisational Practices", chapter ”The Challenges of Algorithm-Based HR Decision-Making for Personal Integrity" and chapter “Female CEOs and Core Earnings Quality: New Evidence on the Ethics Versus Risk-Aversion Puzzle" are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license via link.springer.com.
