Book The Effect of Direct Instruction in Reading Strategies on Students Reading Comprehension

Download or read book The Effect of Direct Instruction in Reading Strategies on Students Reading Comprehension written by Lina Ghazi Soubra and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to examine the relative effect of strategy instruction using a specific direct instruction model, the Optimal Learning Model (OLM), on ESL students' reading comprehension, by comparing it to the results achieved by regular instruction that is typified by its heavy reliance on content and teach ing reading skills rather than strategies. The participants in this experiment w ere 46 third grade, ESL students enrolled at the same private international scho ol in Beirut. Two sections were assigned into an experimental and control group. A pre and post-test quasi-experimental design was used. A Reading Comprehension Test was administered prior to and after instruction in order to evaluate the e fficacy of the intervention. Descriptive statistics (means and standard deviatio ns) of the scores on the variables under study, an independent sample t-test, as well as analysis of co-variance tests (ANCOVA) were conducted to address the qu estion raised in the study. The treatment conditions (experimental versus contro l) were used as the independent variable and the post-test comprehension scores as the dependent variable. The pre-test scores were used as covariates. The results revealed an overall statistically significant difference in favor of the experimental group on the dependant variable of reading comprehension post- test scores. This yields strong indications to the efficacy of the direct instru ction of reading comprehension strategies as opposed to regular instruction and provides for important practical implications in the area of reading instruction.

Book Effects of Explicit Direct Instruction of Reading Comprehension Strategies

Download or read book Effects of Explicit Direct Instruction of Reading Comprehension Strategies written by Susan M. Grabe and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this action research study was to determine if explicit direct instruction of comprehension strategies, particularly in questioning, would improve students' reading comprehension, which in turn increase instructional reading levels. Participants were taught the comprehension strategy "questioning" through the process of direct modeling, guided practice, and independent practice. Data were collected throughout the duration of the study, and the effectiveness of explicit direct instruction of questioning was determined. Findings suggested that by explicitly teaching questioning as a comprehension strategy, students became more engaged with text and increased their instructional reading level. This study encouraged me to continue to implement best practices in teaching comprehension strategies to ensure the success of students at Prairie Ridge Elementary in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Book Rethinking Reading Comprehension

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical book grows out of a recent report written by the RAND Reading Study Group (RRSG), which proposed a national research agenda in the area of reading comprehension. Here, RRSG members have expanded on their findings and translated them into clear recommendations to inform practice. Teachers gain the latest knowledge about how students learn to comprehend texts and what can be done to improve the quality of instruction in this essential domain. From leading literacy scholars, the book explains research-based ways to: *Plan effective instruction for students at all grade levels *Meet the comprehension needs of English-language learners *Promote adolescents' comprehension of subject-area texts *Understand the complexities of comprehension assessment *Get optimal benefits from instructional technologies *And much more!

Book Student Incorporation of Different Reading Strategies and the Effect on Comprehension

Download or read book Student Incorporation of Different Reading Strategies and the Effect on Comprehension written by Jessica Fox and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this 6-week action research study was to determine the effect of incorporating different strategies and interventions on improving the reading comprehension of struggling third-grade readers. The research questions included: In what ways do students' reading skills improve with specific strategies? How could implementing different strategies affect students' learning in reading? Throughout this program, I utilized technologies and instructional strategies to assist student learning and reach the goal of achieving grade-level reading proficiency. Multiple data sources, including pre- and post-surveys, observation notes, student work samples, Accelerated Reader progress monitoring, Lexia growth tracking, and direct instruction of reading comprehension strategies were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Results indicated that students gained connections with reading and furthered their reading comprehension through technology components and direct instruction in reading strategies."--Abstract, p. 1.

Book Comprehension Grades K 12

Download or read book Comprehension Grades K 12 written by Douglas Fisher and published by Corwin. This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radically change the way students learn from texts, extending beyond comprehension to critical reasoning and problem solving. Is your reading comprehension instruction just a pile of strategies? There is no evidence that teaching one strategy at a time, especially with pieces of text that require that readers use a variety of strategies to successfully negotiate meaning, is effective. And how can we extend comprehension beyond simple meaning? Bestselling authors Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey, and Nicole Law propose a new, comprehensive model of reading instruction that goes beyond teaching skills to fostering engagement and motivation. Using a structured, three-pronged approach—skill, will, and thrill—students learn to experience reading as a purposeful act and embrace struggle as a natural part of the reading process. Instruction occurs in three phases: Skill. Holistically developing skills and strategies necessary for students to comprehend text, such as monitoring, predicting, summarizing, questioning, and inferring. Will. Creating the mindsets, motivations, and habits, including goal setting and choice, necessary for students to engage fully with texts. Thrill. Fostering the thrill of comprehension, so that students share their thinking with others or use their knowledge for something else. Comprehension is the structured framework you need to empower students to comprehend text and take action in the world.

Book Direct Instruction of Inferential Reading Comprehension Strategies to Increase Reading Comprehension for Students with Disabilities

Download or read book Direct Instruction of Inferential Reading Comprehension Strategies to Increase Reading Comprehension for Students with Disabilities written by Heather Dulas and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research question addressed was, how does direct teaching of inferential reading strategies impact students' ability to use these skills when reading independently? The motivating factor for this capstone was the challenge students faced in the classroom and on standardized tests when expected to answer inferential comprehension questions after reading; although students were able to demonstrate literal comprehension, they continued to struggle with inferential comprehension tasks. Based on Tovani (2000, 2004) and Beers' (2003) research, the author selected two inferential reading comprehension strategies to explicitly teach ninth and tenth grade students with learning disabilities. Methods of instruction are documented and related literature explored to validate the study. The author describes both success and challenges in implementing the strategies and concludes: 1) explicit strategy instruction is valuable when teaching students with learning disabilities; 2) students with disabilities may not immediately generalize strategies used in the classroom when working independently.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehension is one of the five core components of reading, which has been a hot topic for the last few years. It is a complex process that requires students to use multiple cognitive skills. Students also need to have direct instruction of strategies, which can help develop reading comprehension. The purpose of this book is to investigate the effects of reciprocal teaching vs. think-aloud on the English reading comprehension of pre-intermediate students in Gorgan, Iran. Reciprocal teaching involves four main reading strategies: predicting, questioning, clarifying and summarizing. Think-aloud involves prediction, forming mental pictures, connecting what they read to what they already read, creating analogies, and verbalizing confusing points. The results of this book indicate that think-aloud and reciprocal teaching had significantly positive effects on the English reading comprehension; however, think-aloud better enhances English reading comprehension.
