Book Effects of Explicit Direct Instruction of Reading Comprehension Strategies

Download or read book Effects of Explicit Direct Instruction of Reading Comprehension Strategies written by Susan M. Grabe and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this action research study was to determine if explicit direct instruction of comprehension strategies, particularly in questioning, would improve students' reading comprehension, which in turn increase instructional reading levels. Participants were taught the comprehension strategy "questioning" through the process of direct modeling, guided practice, and independent practice. Data were collected throughout the duration of the study, and the effectiveness of explicit direct instruction of questioning was determined. Findings suggested that by explicitly teaching questioning as a comprehension strategy, students became more engaged with text and increased their instructional reading level. This study encouraged me to continue to implement best practices in teaching comprehension strategies to ensure the success of students at Prairie Ridge Elementary in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Book The Effect of Direct Instruction in Reading Strategies on Students Reading Comprehension

Download or read book The Effect of Direct Instruction in Reading Strategies on Students Reading Comprehension written by Lina Ghazi Soubra and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to examine the relative effect of strategy instruction using a specific direct instruction model, the Optimal Learning Model (OLM), on ESL students' reading comprehension, by comparing it to the results achieved by regular instruction that is typified by its heavy reliance on content and teach ing reading skills rather than strategies. The participants in this experiment w ere 46 third grade, ESL students enrolled at the same private international scho ol in Beirut. Two sections were assigned into an experimental and control group. A pre and post-test quasi-experimental design was used. A Reading Comprehension Test was administered prior to and after instruction in order to evaluate the e fficacy of the intervention. Descriptive statistics (means and standard deviatio ns) of the scores on the variables under study, an independent sample t-test, as well as analysis of co-variance tests (ANCOVA) were conducted to address the qu estion raised in the study. The treatment conditions (experimental versus contro l) were used as the independent variable and the post-test comprehension scores as the dependent variable. The pre-test scores were used as covariates. The results revealed an overall statistically significant difference in favor of the experimental group on the dependant variable of reading comprehension post- test scores. This yields strong indications to the efficacy of the direct instru ction of reading comprehension strategies as opposed to regular instruction and provides for important practical implications in the area of reading instruction.
