Book Relationship Between the Fracture Toughness and the Crack Tip Radius

Download or read book Relationship Between the Fracture Toughness and the Crack Tip Radius written by R. Taggart and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conditions that surround the tip of a sharp crack in a ductile metallic material dictate the onset of plastic flow and crack extension. The problem of predicting the onset of unstable fracture is related directly to the difficulty of measuring or calculating the actual stresses and strains within the plastic enclave that encompasses the crack tip. Beeuwkes has obtained an approximate solution for the elastic-plastic state in the vicinity of the crack tip and concludes that the crack tip radius after deformation together with the fracture strength at nil ductility of the material form the basis for a fracture criterion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Memorandum discusses the current situation on the inclusion of fracture-toughness testing requirements in specifications for high-strength steels used for military applications. The Memorandum was prepared at the request of The Technical Cooperation Program (TTCP), and contains information from Canadian and British members of that program, as well as U.S. information. Military applications discussed include missile motor cases, aircraft landing gear, gun tubes, armor plate, and hydrofoils. (Author).

Book Determination of Fracture Toughness by CTOD Resistance Curve Method

Download or read book Determination of Fracture Toughness by CTOD Resistance Curve Method written by SK. Putatunda and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture toughness ?i of AISI 4340 steel in the hardened and tempered condition has been determined by the multiple-specimen CTOD (crack tip opening displacement) resistance curve method. This fracture toughness ?i value has been compared with the JIc fracture toughness also obtained by the multiple-specimen JR curve technique. The investigation also examines the effect of specimen size, thickness, and width on ?i and ?R curve behavior. The effect of these parameters on the constraint factor m in the J-? relationship has also been examined. Compact tension specimens with TL orientation were used. All specimens satisfied ASTM E 813 standard size requirements.

Book The Effects of Tempering and Test Temperature on the Dynamic Fracture Initiation Behavior of an AISI 4340 VAR Steel

Download or read book The Effects of Tempering and Test Temperature on the Dynamic Fracture Initiation Behavior of an AISI 4340 VAR Steel written by Y. C. Chi and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted into the effect of tempe ring, test temperature and loading rate on the fracture initiation behavior of an AISI 4340 VAR steel. The fracture initiation test were conducted by stress wave loading of a prefatigued circumferential crack in a notched round bar. The geometry provides for plane strain conditions at the fracture site, and the instrumentation gives records of average stress at the fracture site and of crack opening displacement, both as functions of time. Keywords: Fracture, 4340 VAR steel, fracture toughness, dynamic effects, temperature effects, microstructural effects. (jes).

Book Mechanisms of Environment Induced Subcritical Flaw Growth in AISI 4340 Steel

Download or read book Mechanisms of Environment Induced Subcritical Flaw Growth in AISI 4340 Steel written by William Alan Van der Sluys and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experiment designed to study the effect of several variables on the subcritical crack growth rate of a high-strength steel in a water environment was conducted. Double cantilever beam specimens of an AISI 4340 steel were employed to study crack extension rates. The environmental variables included temperature, pH of the liquid environment, electric charging and the combined effect of pH and electric charging. (Author).

Book Influence of Work Hardening Exponent on Crack Propagation in High strength Materials

Download or read book Influence of Work Hardening Exponent on Crack Propagation in High strength Materials written by G. L. Hanna and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of work hardening exponent on the variation of fracture toughness with material thickness was studied for high strength steel, aluminum, and titanium alloys. A variety of materials could be compared by employing normalizing parameters to represent the toughness in terms of the relative plastic zone size and representing the relationship on a logarithmic plot. Using this method the normalized fracture toughness parameter in the region of 100% slant fracture was proportional to the square of the work hardening exponent for the body-centered cubic metals. In the fracture mode transition region, however low work hardening was beneficial and the thickness at which the transition occurred decreased as the work hardening exponent increased. The influence of work hardening exponent on cyclically-induced crack growth rates in AISI 4340 steel and 13V-11Cr-3A1 titanium was also evaluated. In the steel the growth rate was slightly less for the material with the lower work hardening exponent while the titanium exhibited so significant trend as a function of work hardening characteristics. The specimen thickness had the greatest effect on the cyclically-induced crack growth with decreased growth rates present in the thicker specimens. Attempts were also made to control the process zone size by adding zirconia particles to a high strength steel matrix through powder metallurgy techniques.
