Book The Effect of Conical Boattails on the Magnus Characteristics of Projectiles at Subsonic and Transonic Speeds

Download or read book The Effect of Conical Boattails on the Magnus Characteristics of Projectiles at Subsonic and Transonic Speeds written by George I. T. Nielsen and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind tunnel tests were conducted on the Army-Navy Spinner Rocket at subsonic and transonic speeds to determine the influence of boattail configuration on the aerodynamic characteristics of projectile shapes. The boattail configurations consisted of a square base, 1/2- and 1-caliber, 7 degree conical boattails, and an in-caliber fin boattail. Data were obtained on the 5- and 7- caliber configurations at Mach 0.26 and from Mach 0.8 to 1.02. Data were also obtained on the 4- and 6-caliber models at Mach 0.26.

Book Experimental Magnus and Static Stability Characteristics of Ballistic Projectiles with Various Boattail Angles and Lengths at Mach Numbers from 0 5 Through 2 5

Download or read book Experimental Magnus and Static Stability Characteristics of Ballistic Projectiles with Various Boattail Angles and Lengths at Mach Numbers from 0 5 Through 2 5 written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the effect of boattail angle, boattail length, and base diameter on the Magnus-force and moment characteristics of spin-stabilized projectiles. The models were tested at Mach numbers from 0.5 through 1.3 over an angle-of-attack range from -2 to 8 deg. Data were obtained for a range of Reynolds numbers and for several spin parameter values. Results of this test, as well as results for Mach numbers 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 from previous tests, are presented showing the effects of Mach number, angle of attack, spin rate, and boattail geometry.

Book Experimental Magnus Characteristics of Several Ballistic Projectiles with Various Boattail Angles and Lengths at Mach Numbers 1 5 2 0 and 1 5

Jenke and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the effects of boattail angle, the boattail length, and the base diameter on the Magnus-force and moment characteristics of spin-stabilized projectiles. The models were tested at Mach numbers 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 over an angle-of-attack range from -2 to 8 deg. Data were obtained at length Reynolds numbers of 2,440,000, 9,600,000, and 17,530,000, and for spin parameter (pd/2V sub infinity) values of 0.024 to about 0.270 radians. Results are presented showing the effects of spin, Mach number, angle of attack, boattail geometry, and Reynolds number. (Modified author abstract).

Book Magnus Characteristics of Arbitrary Rotating Bodies

Download or read book Magnus Characteristics of Arbitrary Rotating Bodies written by I. D. Jacobson and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report reviews both theoretical and experimental investigations of the Magnus effect on arbitrary bodies of revolution. The main emphasis is on spinning projectiles at angle of attack, both with and without fins. Flow visualization measurements are used to assess the accuracy of the existing theories. Laminar, turbulent, and mixed boundary layers are considered. (Author).

Book Determination of Aerodynamic Characteristics of Ballistic Projectiles at Transonic Speeds

Download or read book Determination of Aerodynamic Characteristics of Ballistic Projectiles at Transonic Speeds written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of a predictive method for determining the steady inviscid aerodynamic behavior of ballistic projectiles throughout the transonic range is reported. The development has been directed toward establishing the theoretical capability for predicting the static stability characteristics of both the standard conical boattail projectiles as well as a variety of new nonaxisymmetric boattail shapes under study by the U.S. Army. The theoretical procedure employs the classical transonic equivalence rule together with a new loading calculation method which is based on apparent mass concepts and makes use of the nonlinear equivalence rule flow solutions. Theoretical results for surface pressures, loadings, and static aerodynamic characteristics are presented throughout the transonic range for a variety of projectiles. Comparisons are made both with other theoretical methods as well as with experimental results and verify the accuracy of the procedure. Future extension and application of the overall procedure to missile stability and performance is suggested and discussed.

Book Body Alone Aerodynamics of Guided and Unguide Projectiles at Subsonic Transonic and Supersonic Mach Numbers

Download or read book Body Alone Aerodynamics of Guided and Unguide Projectiles at Subsonic Transonic and Supersonic Mach Numbers written by Frankie Gale Moore and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several theoretical and empirical methods are comgined into a single computer program to predict lift, drag, and center of pressure on bodies of revolution at subsonic, transonic, and supersonic Mach numbers. The body geometries can be quite general in that pointed, spherically blunt, or truncated noses are allowed as well as discontinuities in nose shape. Particular emphasis is placed on methods which yield accuracies of ninety percent or better for most configurations but yet are computationally fast. theoretical and experimental results are presented for several projectiles and a computer program listing is included an an appendix.

Book An Improved Projectile Boattail

Download or read book An Improved Projectile Boattail written by Anders S. Platou and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of projectile boattails have shown improved aerodynamic performance over the standard conical boattail. These boattails have equal or lower drag and an improved gyroscopic stability. Their Magnus and damping characteristics appear to be satisfactory so that the projectile should be dynamically stable. Also, these boattails increase the projectile wheel base considerably, thereby decreasing the balloting in the gun tube. The improved aerodynamic performance could lead to longer ranges, longer projectiles or lower spin rates for future projectiles.
