Download or read book The Effect of Concept Mapping on Baccalaureate Nursing Students Knowledge Acquisition written by Pamela S. Laskowski and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is a series of three papers on the effect of concept mapping on baccalaureate nursing students' knowledge acquisition. The first paper is an integrative review of the literature on the use of concept mapping in nursing education. The review evidences that concept mapping has been effective in nursing education for increasing students' critical thinking. However, it shows that no studies addressing the level of nursing knowledge gained using concept mapping were identified, indicating a need for research in the area of the use of concept mapping for nursing knowledge acquisition. The second paper is a feasibility study of the methodological approaches proposed for a research study on the effect of concept mapping on nursing knowledge acquisition of nursing students. It affirms that the proposed methods of teaching concept mapping and scoring concept maps using the Concept Map Structural Scoring Method are feasible and appropriate for such a research study. The third paper is a report of the research study undertaken on the effect of concept mapping on baccalaureate nursing students' knowledge acquisition. This study reveals that utilizing concept mapping along with lecture appears to help improve baccalaureate students 'nursing knowledge acquisition, although further research is needed.

Book Nursing Care Plans Versus Concept Mapping in the Enhancement of Critical Thinking Skills in Nursing Students Enrolled in a Baccalaureate Degree Nursing Program

Download or read book Nursing Care Plans Versus Concept Mapping in the Enhancement of Critical Thinking Skills in Nursing Students Enrolled in a Baccalaureate Degree Nursing Program written by Tina Sinatra-Wilhelm and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this ongoing practice change project is to ascertain the effectiveness of concept mapping as a teaching strategy to facilitate critical thinking skills in the baccalaureate level nursing student. An in-depth literature review of topics related to the concept of critical thinking was performed. The research identifies several strategies to improve critical thinking in students as well as in new graduate nurses. All of the studies performed identified some degree of dissatisfaction with the critical thinking skills of nursing students in the beginning of their careers as student nurses or the critical thinking skills of new graduate nurses. Recommendations for further research on the concept of critical thinking and methods for enhancement is recommended by all of the research studies identified. Many of the studies discussed critical thinking skills in the student in the beginning and at the end of their nursing programs in order to improve critical thinking in students and also to provide recommendations for curriculum revision involving critical thinking (Spelic, Parsons, Hercinger, Andrews, Parks, & Norris, 2001, Shin, Lee, Ha & Kim, 2006, Hoffman, 2006, Paul, 1995, Khosravani, Manoochehri, & Memarian, 2005, Castellino & Scheuster, 2005, King & Shell, 2002). Among many of those recommendations was the use of concept mapping to improve critical thinking skills. The nursing process is currently being utilized in the proposed research setting with the completion level students. The current practice change project compares the utilization of the nursing care plan and concept mapping as a teaching strategy to enhance critical thinking skills in baccalaureate level nursing students in the clinical setting." -- Abstract.

Book The Effect of Concept Mapping on Student Understanding and Correlation with Student Learning Styles

Download or read book The Effect of Concept Mapping on Student Understanding and Correlation with Student Learning Styles written by William G Mosley and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the use of concept mapping as a pedagogical strategy to promote change in the learning styles of pre-nursing students. Students' individual learning styles revealed two subsets of students; those who demonstrated a learning style that favors abstract conceptualization and those who demonstrated a learning style that favors concrete experience. Students in the experimental groups performed concept mapping activities designed to facilitate an integrative understanding of interactions between various organ systems of the body while the control group received a traditional didactic instruction without performing concept mapping activities. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected in order to measure differences in student achievement. Analysis of the quantitative data revealed no significant change in the learning styles of students in either the control or experimental groups. Learning style groups were analyzed qualitatively for recurring or emergent themes that students identified as facilitating their learning. An analysis of qualitative data revealed that most students in the pre-nursing program were able to identify concepts within the class based upon visual cues, and a majority of these students exhibited the learning style of abstract conceptualization. As the laboratory experience for the course involves an examination of the anatomical structures of the human body, a visual identification of these structures seemed to be the most logical method to measure students' ability to identify anatomical structures.

Book Pedagogic Frailty and Resilience in the University

Download or read book Pedagogic Frailty and Resilience in the University written by Ian M. Kinchin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-17 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pedagogic Frailty and Resilience in the University presents a theoretical model and a practical tool to support the professional development of reflective university teachers. It can be used to highlight links to key issues in higher education. Pedagogic frailty exists where the quality of interaction between elements in the evolving teaching environment succumbs to cumulative pressures that eventually inhibit the capacity to develop teaching practice. Indicators of frailty can be observed at different resolutions, from the individual, to the departmental or the institutional. Chapters are written by experts in their respective fields who critique the frailty model from the perspectives of their own research. This will help readers to make practical links between established bodies of research literature and the concept of frailty, and to form a coherent and integrated view of higher education. This can then be explored and developed by individuals, departments or institutions to inform and evaluate their own enhancement programmes. This may support the development of greater resilience to the demands of the teaching environment. In comparison with other commonly used terms, we have found that the term ‘frailty’ has improved resonance with the experiences of colleagues across the disciplines in higher education, and elicits a personal (sometimes emotional) response to their professional situation that encourages positive dialogue, debate and reflection that may lead to the enhancement of university teaching. This book offers a particular route through the fractured discourses of higher education pedagogy, creating a coherent and cohesive perspective of the field that may illuminate the experiences and observations of colleagues within the profession. “If we are to realise the promise of higher education ... we will need the concepts, methods, and reflections contained in this book.” – Robert R. Hoffman

Book excerpt: This fully revised and updated edition of Learning, Creating, and Using Knowledge recognizes that the future of economic well being in today's knowledge and information society rests upon the effectiveness of schools and corporations to empower their people to be more effective learners and knowledge creators. Novak’s pioneering theory of education presented in the first edition remains viable and useful. This new edition updates his theory for meaningful learning and autonomous knowledge building along with tools to make it operational ─ that is, concept maps, created with the use of CMapTools and the V diagram. The theory is easy to put into practice, since it includes resources to facilitate the process, especially concept maps, now optimised by CMapTools software. CMapTools software is highly intuitive and easy to use. People who have until now been reluctant to use the new technologies in their professional lives are will find this book particularly helpful. Learning, Creating, and Using Knowledge is essential reading for educators at all levels and corporate managers who seek to enhance worker productivity.
