Book The Effects of Sound field Amplification on Children with Hearing Impairment and Other Diagnoses in Preschool and Primary Classes

Download or read book The Effects of Sound field Amplification on Children with Hearing Impairment and Other Diagnoses in Preschool and Primary Classes written by Lois Ehrler Furno and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective learning occurs in auditory environments. Background noise is inherent to classrooms with recommended levels 15 decibels softer than instruction, which is rarely achieved. Learning is diminished by interference to the auditory reception of information, especially for students who are hard of hearing other diagnoses. Sound-field amplification (SFA) addresses the need for improving the noise to speech ratio while decreasing the distance between the sound source and the student's ear. The use of SFA amplifies the teacher's voice above ambient noise. This is accomplished by the placement of a receiver/amplification system in the classroom along with the teacher's use of a microphone and FM transmission device. Examination of previous research demonstrates the effectiveness of sound-field technology for elementary school children, establishing a rationale for using sound-field amplification with students who are of early childhood age. The purpose of this single subject study is to examine the effects of SFA used for children with hearing loss and additional diagnosed conditions enrolled in preschool, first, and second grade classes. The four focus students were matched with peers for further control, and studied for both displaying attending behaviors and rate of compliance following routine directions in order to demonstrate comprehension of spoken material. All participants demonstrated improvement in their attending behavior and compliance to directions. Focus students with hearing loss produced stronger results than their general education peers to the activation of the sound-field system. Teachers indicated that the sound-field system was beneficial to the focus students. All teachers reported they would use it again.

Book Hearing Aids for Speech Language Pathologists

Download or read book Hearing Aids for Speech Language Pathologists written by H. Gustav Mueller and published by Plural Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hearing aid technology changes at a rapid pace. For speech-language pathologists who work with individuals using hearing instruments, keeping up with the new technology can be challenging, and sometimes even intimidating. Hearing Aids for Speech-Language Pathologists is designed to remove the mystery and the confusing high-tech terms of the many hearing aid algorithms and features, by simply laying out the need-to-know aspects in an organized, easy to read and understand manner. The core of this text focuses on how modern hearing aids work, and the tests associated with the fitting of these instruments. Attention is given to both the school age and adult hearing aid user. Recent developments such as situation detection, rechargeability and wireless connectivity are reviewed in detail, as well as the popular use of smartphone apps to allow the user to control the processing. Amplification is not just hearing aids, and therefore chapters also have been dedicated to implantable amplification strategies, FM and Bluetooth solutions. Hearing aid fitting cannot be studied in isolation, but rather, how it fits into the complete treatment of the patient with hearing loss, including the audiologic rehabilitative process. For this reason, the beginning chapters of the book are devoted to a review of the basics of the modern audiologic evaluation and the associated auditory pathologies. Readers will also find portions of the book that address hearing screening in the schools, rehabilitative techniques and auditory training. Practicing speech-language pathologists and graduate students will find that this text provides the latest in concise and practical information in the areas of hearing aids and rehabilitative audiology. Hearing Aids for Speech-Language Pathologists is authored by two of the industry's leading authorities on adult amplification, who have carefully crafted a text that provides speech-language pathologists with the essential information to work comfortably with hearing instruments and their accessories for individuals of all ages.

Book Evaluating Sound Field Amplification Technology in New Brunswick Schools

Download or read book Evaluating Sound Field Amplification Technology in New Brunswick Schools written by Rhonda Rubin and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Purpose) The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of classroom sound field amplification on communication in kindergarten through grade 3 classrooms. (Methodology) Sixty classrooms were involved in the study; half of the classrooms were provided with sound field amplification. The flow of communication was measured through classroom observation. A qualitative component of the study involved semi-structured interviews and open-ended questions with teachers and students. In addition, acoustic measures were recorded using a sound level meter and hearing screenings of the students were completed. (Results) The flow of communication in amplified classrooms improved in most areas studied. Teachers and students felt that the amplification technology enhanced the learning process. Themes that emerged included improved signal to noise ratio in the classroom, enhanced learning, inclusion of students with special needs, more efficacious communication, and learning to use the technology. Acoustic measures showed that students were often working in below standard classroom listening conditions and hearing screenings revealed a prevalence of hearing problems between 12%-29%. (Conclusions) Amplification technology can be beneficial in elementary classrooms. [New Brunswick Department of Education funded this pilot research project.].

Download or read book Hearing Loss written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-12-17 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of Americans experience some degree of hearing loss. The Social Security Administration (SSA) operates programs that provide cash disability benefits to people with permanent impairments like hearing loss, if they can show that their impairments meet stringent SSA criteria and their earnings are below an SSA threshold. The National Research Council convened an expert committee at the request of the SSA to study the issues related to disability determination for people with hearing loss. This volume is the product of that study. Hearing Loss: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits reviews current knowledge about hearing loss and its measurement and treatment, and provides an evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the current processes and criteria. It recommends changes to strengthen the disability determination process and ensure its reliability and fairness. The book addresses criteria for selection of pure tone and speech tests, guidelines for test administration, testing of hearing in noise, special issues related to testing children, and the difficulty of predicting work capacity from clinical hearing test results. It should be useful to audiologists, otolaryngologists, disability advocates, and others who are concerned with people who have hearing loss.

Book The Effect of Noise in Open plan and Enclosed Classrooms on Speech Perception for Normal Hearing and Hearing Impaired Children

Download or read book The Effect of Noise in Open plan and Enclosed Classrooms on Speech Perception for Normal Hearing and Hearing Impaired Children written by Ji Hye Park and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open-plan classrooms are becoming popular once again in New Zealand (NZ). This is due to the changing trends in education to a more child-centred educational philosophy. However, the effectiveness of open-plan classrooms on children's learning is controversial. There is also a growing concern about having the large number of children sharing the same area as it can create high noise levels in the classroom. Therefore, it is important to conduct research in NZ to investigate whether modern, open-plan classrooms are acoustically appropriate for children. The Speech-In-Classroom-Noise (SICN) test was developed in this study to assess the effect of modern, open plan classroom noise on speech perception in primary school children. Two primary classrooms in Auckland were selected: an enclosed classroom with 27 children and an open-plan classroom with 94 children. Acoustics during various classroom scenarios were evaluated to develop the SICN test. The SICN test was conducted on 26 children (5.9-9.6 years old). Children were divided into three groups: Group A with 17 typically developing normalhearing children, Group B with 3 cochlear implant (CI) children, and Group C (exclusion group) with 6 children who did not meet the inclusion criteria for Group A for various reasons (e.g. non-native English speaker). The assessment of classroom acoustics revealed that all classrooms exceeded the recommended ambient noise (
