Book Measurements of the Pressure Distribution on the Horizontal Tail Surface of a Typical Propeller driven Pursuit Airplane in Flight

Download or read book Measurements of the Pressure Distribution on the Horizontal Tail Surface of a Typical Propeller driven Pursuit Airplane in Flight written by Melvin Sadoff and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements were made in sideslipping flight at a Mach number of 0.50 of the pressure distribution over the horizontal tail surfaces of a tractor-propeller-driven pursuit airplane, to determine the effects of angle of sideslip and propeller operation on the tail-load distribution. Measurements were also made on the tail-load distribution on the horizontal tail in steady unaccelerated flight over a Mach number range of 0.30 to 0.79 and 0.30 to 0.74, respectively, for the power-on and power-off conditions.

Book Charts of Pressure Rise Obtainable with Airfoil type Axial flow Cooling Fans

Download or read book Charts of Pressure Rise Obtainable with Airfoil type Axial flow Cooling Fans written by A. Kahane and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charts are presented to show the pressure rise that is obtainable in an engine-cooling installation with a typical airfoil-type propeller-speed fan. The charts cover fans of the stator-rotor, rotor-stator, and rotor alone configurations, with blades incorporating both the highly cambered 65-series blower-blade sections and the conventional low-cambered airfoil sections. The effects of operation of a geared fan with rotational speeds limited by compressibility considerations and the effects of initial rotational inflow are indicated. Use of the charts to predict the pressure rise obtainable with any fan of the types considered is illustrated in a sample calculation.

Book Effects of Propeller Operation and Angle of Yaw on the Distribution of the Load on the Horizontal Tail Surface of a Typical Pursuit Airplane

Download or read book Effects of Propeller Operation and Angle of Yaw on the Distribution of the Load on the Horizontal Tail Surface of a Typical Pursuit Airplane written by Harold H. Sweberg and published by . This book was released on 1944 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements were made in the NACA full-scale tunnel of the pressure distribution over the horizontal tail surface of a typical pursuit airplane in order to determine the effects of propeller operation and angle of yaw on the tail load distribution. Most of the tests were made with the propeller operating to simulate climb conditions, high-speed dives, and pull-ups to various normal accelerations for angles of yaw ranging from 10 degrees to -10 degrees. Measurements were also made of the distributions of downwash angle and dynamic pressure in front of the horizontal tail and results have been correlated with the results of the pressure-distribution tests.

Book The Influence of Vertical tail Design and Direction of Propeller Rotation on Trim Characteristics of a Twin engine airplane Model with One Engine Inoperative

Download or read book The Influence of Vertical tail Design and Direction of Propeller Rotation on Trim Characteristics of a Twin engine airplane Model with One Engine Inoperative written by Marvin Pitkin and published by . This book was released on 1945 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: Tests have been made in the Langley free-flight tunnel to determine the influence of mode of propeller rotation and vertical-tail design upon the trim characteristics of a model of a twin-engine airplane with one engine inoperative. The test model was mounted on a trim stand, which allowed freedom in roll and yaw under conditions simulating those required by the NACA and the Army Air Forces for asymmetric-power operation in flight. The seven vertical-tail designs tested included three tails of low aspect ratio and of different area, one twin tail of low aspect ratio, two tails of high aspect ratio and with different rudder areas, and one all-movable tail of high aspect ratio equipped with a linked tab. All tests were made with the flaps down.

Book Effect of Propeller axis Angle of Attack on Thrust Distribution Over the Propeller Disk in Relation to Wake survey Measurement of Thrust

Download or read book Effect of Propeller axis Angle of Attack on Thrust Distribution Over the Propeller Disk in Relation to Wake survey Measurement of Thrust written by Robert E. Pendley and published by . This book was released on 1945 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were made to investigate the variation of thrust distribution over the propeller disk with angle of pitch of the propeller thrust axis and to determine the disposition and the minimum number of rakes necessary to measure the propeller thrust. The tests were made at a low Mach number for a low and a high blade angle with the propeller operating at three small angles of pitch, and some of the tests were repeated at a higher Mach number. The data obtained show that, for small angles of pitch, large changes occur in the energy distribution in the wake which prohibit the use of a single survey rake for thrust measurement in flight tests and limit the use of a single rake in wind-tunnel tests. Under certain conditions, the energy distribution in the wake took on a symmetrical form and two diametrically opposed survey rakes were shown to be satisfactory for obtaining propeller thrust.

Book The Effect of Trailing edge Extension Flaps on Propeller Characteristics

Download or read book The Effect of Trailing edge Extension Flaps on Propeller Characteristics written by John L. Crigler and published by . This book was released on 1945 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: An analysis was made to determine the effect on propeller performance of extension flaps added to the trailing edge of a propeller blade. A method of calculating the changes in the ideal angle of attack, the angle of zero lift, and the design lift coefficient of a propeller blade section having a trailing-edge extension flap was utilized to calculate the performance of a six-blade dual-rotating propeller with extension flaps varying up to 40 percent chord. The method was used to determine the angle that the flap extension must make with the chord in order to obtain a particular load distribution. Although the analysis in this report was made for a wind-tunnel propeller designed to operate at low advance-diameter ration, the method is directly applicable to any propeller section under any operating condition.

Book The Effect of Simulated Icing on Propeller Performance

Download or read book The Effect of Simulated Icing on Propeller Performance written by Blake W. Corson and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests of a 10-foot-diameter three-blade Curtiss 89301-15 propeller with Clark Y blade sections have been conducted in the Langley 16-foot high-speed tunnel in order to determine the effect of simulated iceon the aerodynamic characteristics of the propeller. The irregular coat of cement and fabric was used on the blades to simulate in outline and thickness a formation of glaze ice that might be formed in flight. The propellers were tested on a new 2000-horsepower dynamometer, a brief description of which is included. All tests were made at a rotational speed of 1800 rpm for blade angles of 20, 25, 35, and 40 degrees at the 42-inch radius and at airspeeds varying from 120 to 420 miles per hour. The results are representative of full-scale constant-speed propeller operation.
