Book The Effect of a Title I Math Remediation Program on Student Achievement on the CRCT

Download or read book The Effect of a Title I Math Remediation Program on Student Achievement on the CRCT written by LaTonya Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the mandate of No Child Left Behind (NCLB), increasing students’ test scores have become more pertinent in the education realm. Some schools are offering remedial math classes to provide support for students who are at risk for failure in math. One program implemented in a Title I school is a remedial math class during regular school hours. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a school-wide Title I math remediation program on student achievement on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT). To show the effectiveness of the Title I remedial math program, the researcher compared the scores of middle school students who did not receive math remediation 2004-2005 and middle school students who received math remediation in 2005-2006. Since the critical value was calculated to be higher than the Chi-square, the results were not significant. Therefore, the null hypothesis was not rejected.

Book Steep Math Intervention System and Its Effect on Low Performing Students in Mathematics

Download or read book Steep Math Intervention System and Its Effect on Low Performing Students in Mathematics written by Deborah Inez Hastings and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This quantitative study compared historical data for fifth grade students during the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 school years. The students were identified as needing intervention based on their low performance in math on the CRCT. The Georgia Department of Education mandates that low performing students participate in the EIP program, receive research-based interventions, and are progress monitored through a curriculum-based management system. The Title I funded school in north Georgia progress monitor low performing students’ responsiveness to research-based interventions using the STEEP Math Intervention system. In this study, data was analyzed to determine if there was a significant statistical difference in the distribution of CRCT math scores for fifth grade students who were not progress monitored using the STEEP Math Intervention system in 2006-2007. The findings from the study supported the null hypothesis that there was not a significant statistical difference in the distribution of CRCT math scores between fifth grade students who received the STEEP Math Intervention system and the fifth grade who did not receive the STEEP Math Intervention system.

Download or read book The Effectiveness of a High School Mathematics Remediation Program on Student Achievement written by Joseph Robert Kingsborough and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The landmark educational reform legislation known as the No Child Left Behind Act (2001) brought sweeping change to the educational establishment through clearly defined learning goals and equally clear consequences for poorly performing schools. The present study sought to determine the impact of a remediation program in mathematics at a suburban school district in southeastern Pennsylvania. A cohort of students italicn=63/underline that performed on their 8th grade PSSA mathematics assessment participated in a three-year remediation program that culminated with the 2010 PSSA in mathematics. Results via a Wilcoxin ranked sums test indicated that the overall impact of the remediation program was positive, however, individual strands of the program did not achieve a significant difference between the pre and postest. However, (17) of the participants were able to move from non-proficient to proficient and advanced at the conclusion of the remediation program.

Book The Effect of ALEKS Math Support on Standardized Math Test Scores in Middle School

Download or read book The Effect of ALEKS Math Support on Standardized Math Test Scores in Middle School written by Amy Dawn Fanusi and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quantitative causal-comparative and correlation research studied Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS) at a middle school in rural Georgia. The purpose was to determine if computerized math instruction, as measured by ALEKS, was more effective than traditional teacher instruction with students in math support in order to pass the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT). The study also explored the relationship among other variables: if the percentage of concepts a student completed in ALEKS affected student success on the CRCT, and if gender played a factor in achievement on the CRCT when enrolled in the ALEKS computer math support class. The math intervention used in this study, ALEKS, has been researched using college and high school students, but little research focused on the effectiveness of ALEKS with middle school students. All data collected was archival from the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years and included 294 total participants, of which 181 were enrolled in ALEKS for the entire year; 113 were enrolled in a traditional math support class for the entire year. The researcher analyzed two hypotheses in this study using a one-way ANCOVA and one hypothesis using a Pearson product-moment correlation. Results from this study revealed that ALEKS did not have a significant impact on CRCT test scores in the middle grades, yet there was a correlation to the percentage of ALEKS a student completed and the increase in that student's score on the CRCT. While there has been research conducted in this area, there is still room for more ALEKS research.

Book The Impact of Khan Academy Math Remediation on Ninth Grade Student Achievement

Download or read book The Impact of Khan Academy Math Remediation on Ninth Grade Student Achievement written by Sandra Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine if using Khan Academy as math remediation for fifteen minutes per day during a ninth grade Math I class would significantly affect student math achievement as measured by the North Carolina READY Math I End-of-Course Assessment. This quantitative study conducted at two rural high schools in West Virginia used remediation theory to make a comparison against a control population with the independent variable being grade level instruction only or grade level instruction plus math remediation using Khan Academy. The participants in the study included 131 ninth grade high school students taking a Math I class in a traditional classroom setting between October 2016 and May of 2017. The researcher collected data from students’ pretest and posttest scores on the North Carolina READY Math I End-of-Course Assessment. The original intent was to use analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to reduce the effects of any initial group differences. However, the data failed to pass the assumptions necessary for ANCOVA or t-test. So, a nonparametric test, Mann-Whitney U, was used in the analysis. There was no significant difference in the posttest scores of ninth grade Math I students receiving regular instruction only and those receiving regular instruction along with Khan Academy for math remediation. Suggestions for further research are included.

Book The Effects of Math Intervention on Student Achievement

Download or read book The Effects of Math Intervention on Student Achievement written by Staci Ulichnie and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within diverse classrooms, sometimes teachers need extra assistance to reach all students. This quantitative research design was used to determine the affects of math intervention on student achievement. Students in this study were selected by their "Not Met" PASS scores from their 3rd grade year. A survey assessing student attitudes towards math was given to all students. Teachers were also involved in a survey, asking if they felt the school needed a math interventionist. The measuring instruments for this study were pre-assessments, chapter tests, AIMS data, MAP scores, and 2015 ACT scores. The results of the research showed that the use of a math interventionist increased student achievement. All of the students in this study made gains. Appendices include the student survey, teacher survey, and parent letter.

Book The Effects of a Remedial Math Intervention on Standardized Test Scores in Georgia Middle Schools

Download or read book The Effects of a Remedial Math Intervention on Standardized Test Scores in Georgia Middle Schools written by Chastity London Adams and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schools are looking for interventions to improve academic achievement and increase test scores due to the requirements of No Child Left Behind. One such intervention in middle schools is remedial math. This causal comparative study examined the differences in the standardized test scores for at-risk students who receive remedial math instruction and at-risk students who do not receive this intervention. In addition, this study examined gender differences for the remedial math students. The Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Test of 293 at-risk seventh-grade students was used in this study. Using the previous year's standardized math test scores as a control variable, there was a significant relationship between at-risk students taking remedial math and higher scores on standardized tests, regardless of gender.

The results found no statistically significant difference in chapter test scores from the standard curriculum. However, significantly higher achievement was found on TenMarks.com post-test scores for those who used the online program.

Book The Impact of Reform Instruction on Student Mathematics Achievement

Download or read book The Impact of Reform Instruction on Student Mathematics Achievement written by Thomas A. Romberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-08-15 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarizing data derived from a four-year combined longitudinal/ cross-sectional comparative study of the implementation of one standards-based middle school curriculum program, Mathematics in Context, this book demonstrates the challenges of conducting comparative longitudinal research in the reality of school life. The study was designed to answer three questions: What is the impact on student performance of the Mathematics in Context instructional approach, which differs from most conventional mathematics texts in both content and expected pedagogy? How is this impact different from that of traditional instruction on student performance? What variables associated with classroom instruction account for variation in student performance? The researchers examined a range of variables that affected data collection. These variations highlight the need to study the effects of the culture in which student learning is situated when analyzing the impact of standards-based curricula on student achievement. This book is directed to educational researchers interested in curriculum implementation, mathematics educators interested in the effects of using reform curriculum materials in classrooms, evaluators and research methodologists interested in structural modeling and scaling of instructional variables, and educational policy makers concerned about reform efforts.

Book Remedial Education and Student Achievement

Download or read book Remedial Education and Student Achievement written by Brian Aaron Jacob and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As standards and accountability have become an increasingly prominent feature of the educational landscape, educators have relied more on remedial programs such as summer school and grade retention to help low-achieving students meet minimum academic standards. Yet the evidence on the effectiveness of such programs is mixed, and prior research suffers from selection bias. However, recent school reform efforts in Chicago provide an opportunity to examine the causal impact of these remedial education programs. In 1996, the Chicago Public Schools instituted an accountability policy that tied summer school and promotional decisions to performance on standardized tests, which resulted in a highly non-linear relationship between current achievement and the probability of attending summer school or being retained. Using a regression discontinuity design, we find that the net effect of these programs was to substantially increase academic achievement among third graders, but not sixth graders. In addition, contrary to conventional wisdom and prior research, we find that retention increases achievement for third grade students and has little effect on math achievement for sixth grade students

Book The Effects of Curriculum based Measures on Elementary Math Achievement

Download or read book The Effects of Curriculum based Measures on Elementary Math Achievement written by George Bickert and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 has had significant ramifications across public education. Due to reporting mandates, schools and districts are being held publicly accountable for the academic performance and progress of all students. Since implementation of the law, much attention has been focused on the "achievement gap," that is, any differences in performance between groups of students. Students associated with the achievement gap typically come from certain demographics: minorities, low-income families, students with disabilities, and students with limited English proficiency (English Language Learners). The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of using curriculum-based measures (CBMs) on math achievement, particularly ELL students. Eight elementary schools in northwestern New Mexico, divided into two groups (control and experimental) of four schools each, used the same state-approved, core math curriculum, were compared using a quasi-experimental research design. In addition to the regular core curricular materials, the experimental schools were provided with weekly CBMs, containing sample questions developed from the state's performance standards. Each weekly CBM included at least one question from each of the five broad math strands: number and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data and probability. Fourth (N = 283) and fifth grade (N = 294) students who had continuous enrollment for the duration of the experiment served as subjects. Successive regular administrations of the New Mexico Standards Based Assessment math subtest served as the pre- and posttest measures. Analysis of covariance tests, with the pretest as the covariate, revealed no significant treatment effects for either the fourth or fifth grade students through the use of CBMs as a supplement to the core math curriculum. The significant effects, supported by previous research, were the school and, especially, the teacher for both grades. In this study, the effects of the classroom teacher were of more importance to student achievement than either the school a child attended or what curriculum program or process a given school employed.

Book The Effects of an Intervention on Students Math Self efficacy Practices and Achievement

Download or read book The Effects of an Intervention on Students Math Self efficacy Practices and Achievement written by Melinda K. Ensinger and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of teaching mathematics is ever-changing. Amidst changes in pedagogy, curricula, and standards, what is most important is the belief that students can achieve high levels of math. Mathematical attainment is related to positive math self-efficacy and the use of mathematical practices. This experimental design study aimed to analyze the effects of a six-week intervention on students’ math self-efficacy, practices, and achievement in grades four through six. The following research questions guided the study: RQ1. What effect does the intervention have on students’ math self-efficacy? RQ2. What effect does the intervention have on students’ math practices? RQ3. What effect does the intervention have on students’ math achievement? RQ4. What other student variables moderate the effects of the intervention (i.e., gender, grade level, teacher)? Study results indicated that students in the intervention group reported higher than average gains on the MSE and the SMP than the control group. However, the higher gains on these two measures were not statistically significant. Additionally, the control group’s average increase on the STAR math assessment was higher than the intervention groups but also not statistically significant. These findings provide a practical application for teachers to improve students’ math self-efficacy but suggest additional studies to expand the body of research and the potential benefits of such interventions to math education, teachers, and students alike.
