Book The Effects of an After school Program

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the enactment of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, students who failed to demonstrate proficiency on state assessments were identified and targeted in order to receive interventions to assist in increasing their academic achievement. For many students, time during the regular school day simply could not be provided for the attention or time on-task necessary to meet their needs. As a result, many school districts and schools implemented after-school and tutoring programs to target those students who failed to demonstrate proficiency. Louisville Municipal School District (LMSD) operated an after-school program to help increase the academic achievement of 5th through 8th grade students in reading/language and mathematics on the MCT2. The purpose of this study was to (a) explore the impact the after-school program's strategic components (leadership, activities, and partnerships) had on student achievement, and (b) determine if the after-school program had a positive effect on academic outcomes in the areas of reading/language and mathematics. A mixed method research design was used to conduct the study. A narrative approach was used to provide a response to the first research question. The Chi-squared test of independence was used as the primary means of analysis for the second and third research questions to determine if relationship existed between participation in the after-school program and academic achievement. The results from the research study show that strategic components of an after-school program had a positive impact on student achievement. Emerging themes were identified for each strategic component: leadership, activities, and partnerships. Participation in the after-school program proved to be a good predictor of student achievement on MCT2, with statistically significant Chi-squared results for reading/language. The recommendations for future research are as follows: (a) further research to improve reading/language and mathematics skills among the nation's students, (b) longitudinal studies to determine long term effects on students attending after-school programs multiple years, (c) study of effects of after-school programs on other grade levels, and (d) including outcomes of other variables such as after-school participation on school attendance, behavior, and classroom grades.

Book Keeping Students Safe and Helping Them Thrive

Download or read book Keeping Students Safe and Helping Them Thrive written by David Osher Ph.D. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-05-17 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Details the safety, mental health, and wellness issues in schools today and focuses on the interactions and collaborations needed among students, teachers, families, community members, and other professionals to foster the safety, learning, and well-being of all students. Safe schools and student well-being take a "village" of adults and students with varied interests, perspectives, and abilities collaborating to create caring, supportive, and academically productive schools. Schools are unofficial mental health care providers for children and youth who are placed at risk by social and economic circumstances and whose un- and under addressed needs can compromise teaching and learning. This handbook provides up-to-date information on how to promote safety, wellness, and mental health in a manner that can help draw the needed "village" together. It aligns research and practice to support effective collaboration—it provides information and tools for educators, administrators, policy makers, mental health and community organizations, families, parents, and students to join forces to promote and support school safety, student well-being, and student mental health. Chapters address school context, the dynamic nature of school communities and child development, and the importance of diversity and equity. Chapters provide in-depth understanding of why and how to improve safety, well-being, and mental health in a culturally responsive manner. They provide strategies and tools for planning, monitoring, and implementing change, methods for collaborating, and policy and practice guidance. They provide examples of successful and promising cross-system and cross-stakeholder collaborations. This handbook will interest students, scholars, faculty, and researchers in education, counseling, and psychology; administrators in human services and youth development; policy makers; and student, family, and community representatives.

Book The Effects of After School Programs on Academic Achievement

Download or read book The Effects of After School Programs on Academic Achievement written by Jennifer Hawkins and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State and federal governments have provided funding over the last 30 years to support several educational reforms that include lower class sizes, higher academic standards, peer coaching programs, and several academic intervention programs. One intervention is the 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) after school program. The after school program that was selected for this study provided students 1 hour per day, 4 days per week of academic intervention and tutoring in mathematics and English language arts (ELA) for 36 weeks (180 school days). The purpose of this study was to determine if fifth-grade students who participated in an after school program experienced an increase in mathematics achievement before they transitioned from elementary school into middle school. Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) mathematics assessment scores of fifth-grade students who participated in the 21st CCLC after school program and fifth-grade students who did not participate in the 21st CCLC after school program were collected and compared. An ANCOVA was used to analyze the data. The results indicated that the students who participated in the program did not significantly outperform the non-participant students.

Book Effects of an After School Instructional Advisory Program on the Academic Achievement of At risk Middle School Students

Download or read book Effects of an After School Instructional Advisory Program on the Academic Achievement of At risk Middle School Students written by Wendy L. May and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Great Recession, which began in 2008, many school districts had to make significant cuts to their operating budgets. Some of these cuts such as eliminating after school programs, extracurricular activities, and summer school made it challenging for school districts to close the achievement gap. As the economy began to recover, the California Local Control Funding Formula was implemented to direct more funds into school districts with a large population of students with special needs and at-risk of failing academically. These additional funds which are budgeted as per the Local Control Accountability Plan require school districts to be held accountable for student achievement and progress. Implementing an after school program is one strategy for meeting the needs of at-risk students. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an after school Instructional Advisory Program on the academic achievement of at-risk middle school students. The sample consisted of 25 seventh and eighth-grade students with an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 or below prior to participation. A paired sample t-test was used to determine if there was a significant change in overall GPA after one year of participation. The statistical significance was set at .05. The mean overall GPA after participation was significantly higher than the mean overall GPA prior to participation. The results of the statistical analysis suggest that participation in an after school Instructional Advisory Program may have a positive effect on the overall GPA of at-risk middle school students.

Book The Impacts of Elementary Student Leadership on Group Development in an Afterschool Context

Download or read book The Impacts of Elementary Student Leadership on Group Development in an Afterschool Context written by M. Alexandra Odland and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Student and youth leadership programs are prevalent across the United States with programs based in schools, communities, and religious institutions. The researched benefits of such programs include an increased attachment to the community, a greater sense of belonging, and the development of prosocial behaviors. The vast majority of youth leadership programs are intended for High School and College students, with a smaller number of programs starting in Middle School. Very few programs begin an intentional curriculum in elementary school, which has resulted in far fewer studies about the impact of these benefits of youth leadership for younger students. The BEACON Afterschool Program is based in Moab, Utah, and is an auxiliary program of the Grand County School District. Students sign up for different clubs which take place once a week for eight weeks. The Student Leadership Program has two phases. Phase One is a club that is available for students in grades 3-6 where students have specific lessons in leadership skills and go through a reflective process of leading activities for younger students. After students have taken this club they may participate in Phase Two, joining a club as the designated student leader for the session. The purpose of my study was to determine whether an elementary student leadership program employed in an afterschool context increases confidence with peers for student leaders and a sense of community with those younger students in the clubs which have student leaders. My objectives were to obtain a community perspective by soliciting input from teachers, family members, and students and to determine whether students experience a greater sense of belonging, attachment, and self-confidence as a result of participation in youth leadership. I used a mix of qualitative methods of inquiry including interviews, surveys, and observations. I used these methods as part of an ethnographic research approach to the continued development of the student leadership program for positive impact. The significance of this research is providing a framework for other programs that wish to begin student leadership in an elementary afterschool context and contribute to the prosocial development of youth."--leaf i.
