Book Teacher Perceptions of Effects of Professional Development on Teaching Practice and Student Learning

Download or read book Teacher Perceptions of Effects of Professional Development on Teaching Practice and Student Learning written by Imelda R. Castaňeda and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study sought to test whether multidimensional professional development programs are preferable to a traditional one, which, typically, consists of taking a graduate course. It compared teachers' perceptions about the effects of three programs for professional development on their teaching practice and student performance. Two of the programs, the Arts Integration Program and Job Shadowing Institute, were multidimensional models of professional development. The third was Technology Training, a traditional model of professional development. The purpose of the study was to contribute to the body of knowledge about teachers' perceptions of the effect of professional development on their teaching practice and their students' learning. The study included elementary, middle, and high school teachers as participants and survey respondents. It spanned three years. Descriptive data were collected to provide an accurate description of the three programs. Participant observations of professional development sessions, informal and formal interviews of teachers, administrators, and facilitators were among the data collection tools used during the first two years of the study to provide a detailed description of the actual programs. The main focus of the study was a survey of participants' perceptions of the effect of professional development on their teaching and their students' learning. Survey results indicated that teachers perceived that professional development could be most effective for improving their teaching practice and student learning when the professional development programs are intentional, on going, and systemic. The non-traditional, multidimensional professional development was found to be more effective than the traditional model. However, the results of the study also indicated that even a traditional model of professional development was perceived as having an impact on students' learning when applications were made to curricular content and when there was support for further training. Based on these findings, a model or 'scaffold' towards effective professional development was conceptualized using constructs and characteristics that might influence teaching practice and student learning. Results are discussed in the light of the limitations of the study, implications for education, and suggestions for future research.

Book An Examination of the Nature Quality and Perceived Effectiveness of Continuing Professional Development Opportunities for Physical Education Teachers in the Sultanate of Oman

Download or read book An Examination of the Nature Quality and Perceived Effectiveness of Continuing Professional Development Opportunities for Physical Education Teachers in the Sultanate of Oman written by Durayra Humaid Al Maqbali and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no doubt that improving the quality of education is priority internationally; and teachers are expected to engage in Continuing Professional Development programmes to improve their practices. Research into teachers' CPD, id est what works well and what needs to change to maximise teacher learning, is therefore an important field of inquiry. In the context of Oman, investment in education, including teachers' CPD, has increased substantially since the 1970s. Despite this, emerging research examining CPD structures and possibilities (mainly for teachers of English), has identified a number of limitations of the existing CPD provision in Oman. Although research on teachers' CPD is increasing, there is no research on PE teachers. Questions thus remain about the nature and effectiveness of CPD provision for PE teachers. To address this gap, the present study sought to examine the nature, quality, and perceived effectiveness of continuing professional development opportunities for PE teachers in the Sultanate of Oman. A variety of methods were employed to answer the following main research question which was examine the nature, quality, and perceived effectiveness of continuing professional development opportunities for physical education teachers in the sultanate of Oman. Three studies have contributed to answering this research question. The first study relied on a teacher online CPD survey. The second study examined the experiences and perceptions of 11 PE teachers working in post-basic schools in Muscat. A semi-structured interview was implemented. The third study, also employed a semi-structured interview, focusing on CPD providers from four different organisations in Muscat. The overall finding of this thesis is that there are limited opportunities available for PE teachers in Oman. The formal, government-funded opportunities are not always appropriately targeted and are repetitive in nature. Although teachers reported engaging in some informal learning, this was neither supported nor encouraged in their school. Further research is needed in order to examine the impact on student learning of PE teachers in schools undertaking CPD programmes. Also, an experimental approach could be adopted to provide robust evidence of impact on teacher and student learning.

Book The Development of an Adaptive Environment framework to Assist the Teaching Learning and Assessment of Geography Within the Omani Secondary Education System

Download or read book The Development of an Adaptive Environment framework to Assist the Teaching Learning and Assessment of Geography Within the Omani Secondary Education System written by Batoul Al-Lawati and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owing to particular historical reasons, the Sultanate of Oman emerged into the modern world only in 1970 and launched its state education system in 1972. Less than thirty years later, the Sultanate recognized that a major overhaul of state education was needed to face the challenges that globalization posed to its population and to its economy. The policies for the transition to the Basic Education (BE) system stipulated that students should receive training in information technology (IT) and English from Year One. These provisions were implemented from academic year 1998/1999, so that by the commencement of academic year 2010/2011 three cohorts of students had received a full ten years of schooling in IT. This research investigated the effects of integrating IT into the geography curriculum in Cycle Two of the BE system. Despite an extensive and painstaking search, no previous published study was found that dealt with the pedagogic use of IT in the Omani BE system. One study (Osman 2010) surveyed users of the Oman Educational IT Portal, but it was a general attitudinal survey of all users and did not progress beyond use of a questionnaire. Therefore, this study is the first to conduct fieldwork research in Oman to develop indicators to measure Omani students' performance in and reactions to eLearning. The study also includes two dedicated surveys covering Omani students' and teachers' opinions of and attitudes to eLearning. This is therefore the first study of this type that has been conducted in or for Oman. The findings support the importance of integrating eLearning into the curriculum in Oman, to enhance the delivery of a range of curriculum subjects through the pedagogical use of IT. Through a comparison of responses from teachers and students in Oman and two other countries, this study also explores issues emerging from a comparison between cultures (Gulf Arab and Western) in terms of the varying effects that cultural and other factors can exert on teachers' and learners' acceptance of educational technology in different countries. Again, it is a feature of this research that it is the first to conduct such a comparative study on such a scale involving Gulf Arab students and teachers. This study raises issues surrounding the optimization of acceptance include (1) the necessity of increasing the internet speed in Oman; (2) the current inadequacy of e-Iearning resources; (3) the proper management of eLearning integration; (4) the need for enhancement of eLearning training and skills issues for both teachers and learners: (5) the further relationships inherent in the interaction of culture and the acceptance of technology.

Book Power Epistemology and Pedagogy Female Teacher Education in Oman

Download or read book Power Epistemology and Pedagogy Female Teacher Education in Oman written by Caroline Dorothy Ladewig and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the ways in which socio-cultural factors influence the propensity for critical thinking and critical pedagogy among female teacher candidates in Oman. The conceptual and methodological starting point of the study is the contention that education systems, and teachers more specifically, either reproduce hegemonic values or serve as agents of change. Epistemological positions and the influence of a dynamic network of power relations determine this path. Based on six months of fieldwork in the College of Education at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) and a mixed methodology, this thesis is underpinned by theoretical elements derived from sociology, anthropology, history, education and psychology. Drawing upon the educational insights of Bourdieu, Foucault, Vygotsky and Freire, this study uses a detailed survey of female teacher candidates in the College of Education at SQU, to investigate whether Arab/Islamic traditions and ideals can coexist with critical practice as a foundation for developing a Knowledge Society in Oman. To that end, a voluntary, anonymous survey (n=274) in Arabic, supported by semi-structured interviews and discursive analysis, enabled the identification of core beliefs, behavioural norms and attitudes that underpin the female teacher candidates' motivation to teach, Personal Learning Preferences, teaching philosophy, expectations of students, classroom practices, critical pedagogy and a knowledge society. Additional questions addressed key issues pertaining to religiosity, affinity for notions of tradition and modernity, Internet use, the contents of home libraries, overseas travel experience and descriptors of the ideal female Omani teacher and the qualities of the Arab woman. Quantitative survey data and qualitative responses to open ended questions, as well as interviews with key academic administrators and faculty, highlighted the characteristics of female teacher candidates at SQU. A meta-analysis of the data produced significant predictive models (p
