Book The Effect of a PETTLEP Imagery Intervention based Pre performance Routine on Golfer s Short game Performance

Download or read book The Effect of a PETTLEP Imagery Intervention based Pre performance Routine on Golfer s Short game Performance written by Logan Baughman and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Studies have suggested that imagery has a positive effect on performance in a variety of sports. The PETTLEP model (Holmes and Collins, 2001) includes the seven minimum elements sport psychologists incorporate into their imagery scripts. The PETTLEP model is the most comprehensive imagery model, thus providing the most functional equivalence. Golf is the interest of this study, with research stating that imagery has an overall positive impact on golf performance (Nicholls & Polman, 2005). However, studies involving the PETTLEP model have not been investigated thoroughly. There are several shots that have not been studied with the PETTLEP model, therefore this investigation will aim to shrink the gap in literature by measuring the impact on a short 30-yard shot. Thus, it was hypothesized that the use of a PETTLEP imagery intervention will significantly increase golfer’s short-shot accuracy to the pin. Additionally, it was hypothesized that imagery ability will increase across phases. The participants were 5 skilled (average score > 100) male golfers. A single-subject, ABA (baseline, intervention, return-to-baseline) design was implemented. The study occurred over a 5-week period at a local golf course. Each golfer attempted 20 shots from 30 yards away. Imagery ability was measured using the Movement Imagery Questionnaire-Revised (MIQ-R) and the Motivational Imagery Ability Measure for Sport (MIAMS). The effectiveness of the imagery intervention on short-shot accuracy was assessed using visual inspection and graphs. Results demonstrated improvements in accuracy to the pin for five out of five participants from baseline to intervention. Results evidenced that four out of five participants decreased in accuracy during the return-to-baseline phase. Two out of five participants increased in imagery ability during the intervention. Changes in mean and variability were also evaluated using effect sizes, and suggested that two out of five participants varied less during the intervention phase. Implications of the present study include underlining the impact PETTLEP imagery has on golf performance, specifically when utilized in a pre-performance routine. Results suggest that practicing PETTLEP imagery aids in short-shot accuracy and assists in improving imagery ability.

Book The Effect of PETTLEP Imagery in a Pre Shot Routine on Full Swing Golf Shot Accuracy

Download or read book The Effect of PETTLEP Imagery in a Pre Shot Routine on Full Swing Golf Shot Accuracy written by Scott Swainston and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Context: Imagery has been shown to be an effective tool for enhancing performance in a variety of sports. Specifically, imagery has been found to be extremely effective within the sport of golf (e.g., Nicholls & Polman, 2005; Woolfork, Parish, & Murphy's, 1985). For example, Ploszay, Gentner, Skinner, and Wrisberg (2006) found imagery to improve putting performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect that a PETTLEP imagery intervention implemented into a pre shot routine had on a full swing golf shot. A single subjects design was used with three conditions: imagery before pre shot routine, imagery after pre shot routine and a control condition. Participants were nine undergraduate volunteers with an average age of 19.3 years and an average golf score of 82.1. Three sets of data were recorded: total score, balls in A1 (the closest area to the pin in a standardized scoring target grid), and balls in A5 (anything outside of the grid). It was found that all imagery participants improved from baseline to intervention in all three aspects, while the control group elicited consistent or decreases in performance. Imagery had the greatest impact on performance for balls hit in A5. Implications from this study may benefit golfers of any skill level and sport psychology consultants working with golfers who want to increase their full swing shot accuracy.

Book Evaluation of Traditional and PETTLEP Imagery Interventions for Collegiate Golfers

Download or read book Evaluation of Traditional and PETTLEP Imagery Interventions for Collegiate Golfers written by Beaux M. Myers and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagery use is beneficial to performing golf tasks, such as putting (Smith et al, 2007; Taylor & Shaw, 2002), yet research has not examined the experiences of collegiate golfers in various imagery interventions. To understand how collegiate golfers experience imagery interventions, this study examined their experiences in different imagery interventions using a case study-mixed methods design. Female NCAA Division III golfers participated in a three-week, six-session traditional imagery (n = 3) or PETTLEP (n = 2; Holmes & Collins, 2001) intervention, which included guided imagery through golf-specific imagery scripts. Participants completed a pre- and post-intervention survey that included the Sport Imagery Ability Questionnaire (SIAQ; Williams & Cumming, 2011). Participants were asked to create imagery scripts for the golf task of each session and to practice imagery and record their experiences at least three times via a Qualtrics survey. Upon completion of the intervention, we conducted post-intervention individual interviews to understand their experiences during the intervention. Visual and graphical analysis results indicated an improvement in golf scores from onset of the intervention. Reflexive thematic analysis indicated a positive experience from both imagery groups towards the imagery intervention and two overarching themes for their imagery use: cognitive (e.g., slowing down, awareness of environment, and increased shot intention) and motivational (e.g., increased focus, self-efficacy, and performance). Traditional imagery was most effective when participants imagined their environment. However, PETTLEP imagery was most beneficial when participants imaged physical and emotion. Member reflection sessions were conducted to enhance trustworthiness. This case study suggests that sport psychology professionals may consider using traditional techniques to introduce imagery followed by PETTLEP for skill development. To maximize the effectiveness of PETTLEP, longer programs could be implemented with more sport-specific components, such as having golfers wear uniforms, hold specific golf items, and feeling confident and calm.

Book Considering Intervention Efficacy

Download or read book Considering Intervention Efficacy written by Jennifer A. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A pre-shot routine enables athletes to focus on well rehearsed cues (Schmidt & Pepper, 1998). Pre-shot routines are commonly discussed in golf literature as well as in consultation. Research on routines is scattered; a consistent line of inquiry has not studied all three components of a pre-shot routine (e.g, cognitive, behavioral, and relaxation). Studies have begun to suggest that elite players create their own routines (Cohn, Rotella, & Lloyd, 1990); and thus routines may be particularly beneficial for youth sport performers. Lastly, the literature is still missing studies that employ sound methodological designs, comprehensive interventions teaching adequate mental skills that form a pre-shot routine and social validation of the protocol and results with youth participants. The purpose of this study was to examine the potential efficacy of a pre-shot routine on improving competitive youth golf putting and approach shot performance. The research question was will learning the psychological components (e.g. cognitive cues, behavioral focusing strategies, and relaxation) of a pre-shot routine improve approach shot and putting performance of competitive youth golfers? There were two aims that addressed this research question. The first aim was to determine the impact of learning the mental skills components of a pre-shot routine on the total number of approach shots and putts in tournaments during the competitive season. The hypothesis was that learning a pre-shot routine would result in participants becoming more consistent and/or improved sport performance (e.g, decreasing total number of approach shots and putts per round). The second aim was to examine the potential impact of learning the pre-shot routine on competitive performance from the participants' perspectives and involved them in evaluating the intervention and its impact on their competitive performance. Three youth high school golfers participated in a 10 week program to learn 3 mental skills (i.e, cue words, deep breathing, & behavioral focusing strategy) that would form a pre-shot routine. Participants' competition and practice scorecards were collected, and the total number of strokes per round were graphed and examined for performance improvements. Also, participants completed self-report surveys after each tournament round that asked them to indicate their perceived ability to focus on each hole and whether they adhered to their pre-shot routines. Lastly, participants completed interviews after learning each skill and at the end of the program to evaluate the overall intervention protocol. Performance improvements were observed for 2 participants putting and approach shot performance. Participants found the intervention to be helpful and agreed that their performances (i.e, ball striking, overall performance, iron, wood, & sand shots) improved. Practical implications for sport psychology consultants and future directions were forwarded."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book Imagery in Sport

Download or read book Imagery in Sport written by Tony Morris and published by Human Kinetics. This book was released on 2005 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been known that almost all elite athletes use imagery and that most sport psychologists apply imagery in working with athletes. But most material on the subject has been, to this point, relegated to single chapters in books, to journal articles, or to conference proceedings. Now Imagery in Sport addresses the breadth of what researchers and practitioners in sport psychology know about the topic, and it treats each issue in depth, considering current theories and research on imagery and its application in sport. The reference also addresses future directions in research and practice for imagery in sport. In doing so, Imagery in Sport provides the most comprehensive look at the state of imagery and its uses in sport today. The authors take readers step by step through understanding, investigating, applying, and advancing imagery in sport. The text includes the following: -Sample scripts, preperformance suggestions, and sport-specific and site-specific tips -Presentation and critical analysis of 10 well-known theoretical frameworks for understanding imagery -A full chapter devoted to understanding and successfully using the available measures of imagery in sport, including how to administer imagery-ability measures Imagery in Sport takes complex theories and presents them clearly, using examples from everyday sport contexts. The book helps readers become familiar with the current knowledge about the topic and learn to view it with a critical eye. And it provides practicing sport psychologists with guidelines and strategies for using imagery to help athletes improve their performances.

Book Optimal Timing of a PETTLEP Mental Imagery Intervention on a Dart Throwing Task

Download or read book Optimal Timing of a PETTLEP Mental Imagery Intervention on a Dart Throwing Task written by Paul Knackstedt and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Research supports the use of mental imagery (MI) to increase performance on subsequent motor tasks. Elite athletes, coaches, and sport psychologists agree that MI is effective in positively influencing performance. Recent neuroscience research has established that there is functional equivalence in brain structures when using MI to imagine executing a task and physically executing the same task. To maximize functional equivalence in a MI intervention, Holmes and Collins (2001) introduced the PETTLEP model of MI. Despite overwhelming evidence for the effectiveness of PETTLEP MI, little is known about the optimal time-of-day to practice MI to influence subsequent performance to the highest degree. This study assesses the best time-of-day to use PETTLEP MI to maximize performance in a dart throwing task. Participants for this study included (n=30) undergraduate students that received a one session PETTLEP MI intervention immediately prior to the task (preparatory MI) or 12 hours prior to the task, including 8 hours of nighttime sleep. Data was collected by totaling scores on the dart throwing task based on accuracy and consistency. Baseline scores were compared to post-intervention test scores. The results of a repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) for dart throwing performance indicated no significant improvement in accuracy (p>.05) or consistency (p>.05) following the PETTLEP MI intervention. Further analysis revealed no significant dart throwing improvement for accuracy (p>.05) or consistency (p>.05) based on the timing of PETTLEP MI intervention, indicating no difference in the change from pre-test to post-test between preparatory and consolidation PETTLEP MI groups. These findings suggest that a single session PETTLEP MI intervention for dart throwing is not sufficient to see performance improvements. Although significant results were not found, future PETTLEP MI interventions should consider the use of additional PETTLEP training sessions, the inclusion of skilled performers doing a task they are familiar with, and assessing sleep characteristics, as participants in the current study were found to be poor and disordered sleepers."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.
