Book excerpt: Immanuel Kant’s moral philosophy, political philosophy, and philosophy of judgement have been and continue to be widely discussed among many scholars. The impact of his thinking is beyond doubt and his ideas continue to inspire and encourage an on-going dialogue among many people in our world today. Given the historical and philosophical significance of Kant’s moral, political, and aesthetic theory, and the connection he draws between these theories and the appropriate function and methodology of education, it is surprising that relatively little has been written on Kant’s contribution to education theory. Recently, however, internationally recognized Kant scholars such as Paul Guyer, Manfred Kuehn, Richard Velkley, Robert Louden, Susan Shell, and others have begun to turn their attention to Kant’s writings on education and the role of education in cultivating moral character. Kant and Education: Interpretations and Commentary has gathered these scholars together with the aim of filling this perceived void in Kant scholarship. All of the essays contained within this volume will examine either Kant’s ideas on education through an historical analysis of his texts; or the importance and relevance of his moral philosophy, political philosophy, and/or aesthetics in contemporary education theory (or some combination).

Book excerpt: "One of the greatest problems of education," Kant observes, "is how to unite submission to the necessary restraint with the child's capability of exercising his free will." He explores potential solutions to this dilemma, stressing the necessity of treating children as children and not as miniature adults. His positive outlook on the effects of education include a conviction that human nature could be continually improved; to achieve this end, he advocated that pedagogy, the science of education, be raised to academic status and studied at a university level — an innovative notion for the 18th century.

Kant argued that the human mind creates the structure of human experience, that reason is the source of morality, that aesthetics arises from a faculty of disinterested judgment, that space and time are forms of human sensibility, and that the world as it is "in-itself" is independent of man's concepts of it. Kant took himself to have effected a "Copernican revolution" in philosophy, akin to Copernicus' reversal of the age-old belief that the sun revolved around the earth. His beliefs continue to have a major influence on contemporary philosophy, especially the fields of metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, political theory, and aesthetics.

This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the TRANSLATOR'S PREFACE. Kant continues to be such an important figure in both the educational and the cultural tendencies of the present day that it is not sufficient for one to know the scant outlines of some of his views on educational problems, as they may be given place in the usual summaries in the manuals on the history of education. These views should be set forth in their entirety, which has not been done hitherto in English. Again, the renewed interest in Kant as a great pedagogical Klassiker, displayed in the recent decades by the appearance of several editions of his Ueber Pdagogik in Germany and of a translation of it in France, and the increasing study of educational history by direct appeal to the views of those who have moulded that history, offer ample justification for the appearance of the present translation. And, finally, the contributions which philosophy and philosophers have made to the systematic developments of pedagogy should be given a larger exploitation than has been done hitherto by the students of educational foundations. The translation on which the present volume is based was made a decade ago as a portion of larger historical studies, and without any thought of having it get beyond the form of manuscript. In the course of time it repeatedly gave service to students in the fields of the history of the Kantian philosophy and of modern educational theory. It is hoped that the scope of this double service may now be enlarged by the additions and interpretations which have brought the volume to its present form. It has not been an easy task to put Kant's Ueber Padagogik into smooth, readable English. Many of the sentences in the original are imperfect, being mere notes, brief reminders to a lecturer, as it were. Some of the free renderings adopted were made necessary by reason of the general character of the material. The reader can also be profited if he regards many of the Notes as literal "texts," which can be made to yield their ripest meanings by reflecting upon them as such....
