He was an active public lecturer, leader of the St Louis movement, editor of Webster's Dictionary and of America's first regular journal devoted to philosophy (The Journal of Speculative Philosophy, 1867-93), and author of some 500 articles. For this important series, Harris provided introductions, analyses and commentaries to the individual volumes. The second collection in the series, Educational Theory, selects the works of theoretical and practical advice for educational practitioners. The texts range from broad programmes of educational reform to step by step lesson plans, taking in guides to the best methods of teaching the different subjects, outlines for improvement in teaching in public schools, and studies of the role of education in industry. Harris formulated most of the essential features of these twelve reports as the Superintendent of Schools from 1867 to 1869. These particular reports--which have been acclaimed nationally and internationally--are said to be among the most valuable official publications in American educational literature. They are far different from the descriptive documents originally intended by their author.
