Download or read book Gymnastics of the Mind written by Raffaella Cribiore and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-24 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is at once a thorough study of the educational system for the Greeks of Hellenistic and Roman Egypt, and a window to the vast panorama of educational practices in the Greco-Roman world. It describes how people learned, taught, and practiced literate skills, how schools functioned, and what the curriculum comprised. Raffaella Cribiore draws on over 400 papyri, ostraca (sherds of pottery or slices of limestone), and tablets that feature everything from exercises involving letters of the alphabet through rhetorical compositions that represented the work of advanced students. The exceptional wealth of surviving source material renders Egypt an ideal space of reference. The book makes excursions beyond Egypt as well, particularly in the Greek East, by examining the letters of the Antiochene Libanius that are concerned with education. The first part explores the conditions for teaching and learning, and the roles of teachers, parents, and students in education; the second vividly describes the progression from elementary to advanced education. Cribiore examines not only school exercises but also books and commentaries employed in education--an uncharted area of research. This allows the most comprehensive evaluation thus far of the three main stages of a liberal education, from the elementary teacher to the grammarian to the rhetorician. Also addressed, in unprecedented detail, are female education and the role of families in education. Gymnastics of the Mind will be an indispensable resource to students and scholars of the ancient world and of the history of education.

Book Market Education

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew Coulson
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-09-08
  • ISBN : 1351506889
  • Pages : 430 pages

Download or read book Market Education written by Andrew Coulson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discontent with public education has been on the rise in recent years, as parents complain that their children are not being taught the basics, that they are not pushed to excel, and that their classrooms are too chaotic to encourage any real learning. The public has begun to reject school bond levies with regularity, frustrated by what it perceives to be mounting education costs unaccompanied by increased achievement or accountability. Coulson explores the educational problems facing parents and shows how these problems can best be addressed. He begins with a discussion of what people want from their school systems, tracing their views of the kinds of knowledge, skills, and values education should impart, and their concerns over discipline, drugs, and violence in public schools. Using this survey of goals and attitudes as a guide, Coulson sets out to compare the school systems of civilizations both ancient and modern, seeking to determine which systems successfully educated generations past and which did not. His historical study ranges from classical Greece and ancient Rome, through the Islamic world of the Middle Ages, to nineteenth-century England and modern America. Drawing on the historical evidence of how these various systems operated, Coulson concludes that free educational markets have consistently done a better job of serving the public's needs than state-run school systems have. He sets out a blueprint for competitive, free-market educational reform that would make schools more flexible, more innovative, and more responsive to the needs of parents and students. He describes how education for low-income children might be funded under a market system, and how the transition from monopolistic public education to market education might be achieved. Coulson's Market Education touches on a wide range of issues, including declines in academic achievement, minority education, the role of public school teachers, and mismanagement and corruption in educational bureaucracies. Coulson examines alternative reform proposals from vouchers and charter schools to national standards for school curricula. This timely and engaging book will appeal to parents, educators, and others concerned with the quality and cost of schooling, and will serve as an excellent resource in college courses on the economics and history of education.

Book Handbook of Research on Policies and Practices for Assessing Inclusive Teaching and Learning

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Policies and Practices for Assessing Inclusive Teaching and Learning written by Meletiadou, Eleni and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-01-14 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inclusivity is a crucial factor in assessment design as fair assessment must reflect the needs of a diverse student body. Assessment practices should also be culturally inclusive and supportive to all students while considering the needs of learners with disabilities and specific learning difficulties. Educational institutions worldwide are adopting a range of principles, using a variety of assessment methods, and developing assessment literacy. All these issues must be considered when researching inclusive assessment practices and policies. The Handbook of Research on Policies and Practices for Assessing Inclusive Teaching and Learning discusses the needs of learners of any context, background, and culture. This book strives to promote the importance of global inclusive assessment and teaching, giving an understanding to educators and faculty of the negative effect uniform assessment and teaching strategies have on a diverse body of students. Covering topics such as equitable design, ethnic preferential policies, and multilingual perspectives, this book provides an indispensable resource for researchers, practitioners, educators, teacher educators, policymakers, administrators, program planners, educational managers, educational leaders, professors, and academicians.

This book was released on 1982 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examiners from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development were asked by Greek education authorities, seeking criticism and the assurance that they were on the right road for Greece compared with other countries and running in the right direction, to consider education policies in Greece as they appeared in 1979, a year of many reforms. Part 1 contains the "Examiners' Report." The examiners pinpointed several issues that they considered critically important. They were anxious to know, for example, to what extent K-12 curricula and teaching methods had been modified with the advent of 9 years of compulsory schooling. They raised questions about the efficiency and equity of the selection system. They wanted to know the reasons for creating two types of upper secondary education school and whether the technical vocational type is suitably equipped to challenge comparison with the general education type. They inquired whether the financial and material resources made available were sufficient to make the reforms effective. Part 2 provides the Greek delegation's answers to the examiners' questions. Part 3 contains a summary of the background report prepared for the examiners by the Greek Ministry of Education, describing the education system before and after reforms. (RM)
