Book Religious Institutes in Western Europe in the 19th and 20th Centuries

Download or read book Religious Institutes in Western Europe in the 19th and 20th Centuries written by Jan de Maeyer and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 19th century, religious institutes (orders and congregations) underwent an unprecedented revival. As partners in a large-scale religious modernisation movement, they were welcomed by the Roman Catholic Church in its pursuit of a new role in society (especially in the educational and health-care sectors). At the same time, the Church also deemed it necessary to keep their spectacular growth in check. Until the 1960s religious institutes played an important role both in society at large as well as within the church (for example, at the level of the missions, liturgy and art). Yet, relatively little research has been done on their development either in ecclesiastical or in broad cultural history. As a basis for further study, The European Forum on the History of Religious Insitutes in the 19th and 20th Centuries offers this study of the historiography of religious institutes and of their position in civil and canon law.

Book Roman Catholic Nuns in England and Wales 1800 1937

Download or read book Roman Catholic Nuns in England and Wales 1800 1937 written by Barbara Walsh and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is still considerable ignorance about the life and work of female religious communities in England and Wales. The influence of women who developed professional careers in education, health and social care, while at the same time dedicating themselves to religious life, is presented here with a wealth of material relating to their work. Many widely held misconceptions about nuns are dispelled by the author's analysis of the growth and distribution of the religious orders and congregations, the scope and scale of their work and the ensuing financial and recruitment demands. Nuns and sisters took hands-on responsibility for the building, running and staffing of large and complex institutions, hospitals and schools. Their services were not solely confined to the needs of the expanding Roman Catholic community but had an impact on the surrounding society at many levels. This book makes a novel contribution to our understanding of the provision of welfare services by non-state agencies. It explores the socio-economic origins of recruits and the importance of the contribution made by the nuns, many of them Irish women migrants, to educational and social development in England and Wales. Fully illustrated, it also provides maps and valuable tabulated data to open up this field of research for social history scholars and others interested in the achievements of these women.

Book excerpt: The first section of this volume deals with the formation of the Jesuit philosophy of education and with Jesuit education in Europe and America from its inception to the present. Included are discussions of how the Jesuit traditions of spirituality, education, and formation interface with the status of women, the challenge of modernity, and the renewed quest for authentic spirituality. The second section explores the Jesuit missions, history, and cultural insights, focusing primarily on interactions with native peoples of the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Rather than emphasizing Jesuits as teachers, this section highlights notable cases not previously studied where Jesuits have functioned primarily as learners and pioneers in South America, the American Southwest and Northwest, Africa, and India.
